I really miss travelling, but my travel friends either gone now or not interested any more. Thought about going abroad but after the solitude of covid and being unwell wonder if it would be too much abroad and that UK is great when it’s hot but not in the rain. Feeling really hemmed in and want something to look forward to.

My friend uses One Traveller and another company whose name I can’t recall.

@Allsorts I've never been to the UK, but I think the weather there might resemble Bergen in Norway. If you're looking for somewhere hot, Portugal has near-perfect weather all year round. However, June to August are ideal for truly warm weather. I enjoyed my time in Lisbon, but there are many other places to visit, such as the Algarve, Porto, and Sintra. Being an academic was a wonderful way to see the world. I travelled all over Europe and to the USA presenting papers at conferences. All the arrangements were made by the university travel department. You were expected to settle your own hotel bill in situ so you could book currency up front from the uni if you couldnt afford to wait til you return to be reimbursed. . Obviously it all had to be covered by receipts and reconciled on your return but it was a wonderful way to get a free holiday.

Cheap air tickets often meant a minimum stay so once the conference was over you were free to go where you wished. The uni paid for hotel and all meals for the extra nights - you only had to pay for entertainment.

I visited Vienna, Prague, Siena, Lisbon, Reykjavík, Brussels, Las Vegas, New York and many other places all co the uni I worked for. Of course all this was post pandemic and I dont know if it still happens.

River cruising is a wonderful way to travel alone. As someone mentioned upthread, Riviera do solo cruises. I’ve not long been back from one although in this instance my friend came too, although separate cabins. Everything is organised for you and you can socialise or not as you fancy. People were very friendly and I’ve just booked another solo cruise for next year which I’ll be doing on my own. I can’t recommend it enough.
