Can't find travel insurance

DD1 and I are going shortly to Italy for a week. I'm 76, active, not overweight, no health issues that impact on my life but I can't find travel insurance. In September I was diagnosed with high cholesterol. It is now normal but am awaiting a further consultation to see if it is familial hypercholesterolemia. Since September I have been monitoring my BP and sending my results regularly to my GP. It fluctuates between normal and high and generally averages out around 135. She has not yet recommended medication but has put me on the list for a 24 hour monitor and then decide if medication needed. Awaiting diagnosis and tests goes against me on insurance applications. I feel in the best of health. A gransnetter mentioned Spectrum but that's out of action at the moment and sent me to Albert and Eddie. They turned me down. I'm waiting for a reply from a couple of other companies. Any suggestions from gransnetters?

I will be watching closely Grandmama as we are in same position. We are a bit younger than you. I don’t have any serious health issues and no ops in the pipeline but husband has extremely high BP, sleep apnoea (controlled) and should have had back surgery but the BP was too high for them to do it safely.

Husband and I just need a mutually convenient time to get on and see what we can do. The way I look at it is whenever we go on holiday we see people who appear far less healthy than us, so who insures them?

Can we swap quotes?

We have worldwide, multi-trip insurance via our (paid for at £15 a month) Co-op account. It’s goes up to age 80, with no age-related extra charges. They do charge more for pre-existing conditions, but my husband who has a life limiting illness and a history of cancer, pays only £70 extra.

The account also includes RAC membership and mobile phone insurance. In total, we pay, therefore, £250 per year for all of those

Up to 45 days per trip.

Siope Tue 23-Apr-24 19:39:48

You can speak to the insurer and get a quote before you commit to the account, if I recall correctly

Primrose53 Tue 23-Apr-24 19:40:28

Siope is that pp or for the pair of you please?
Do you mean you CoOp bank account.
Thanks

A BP of 135 isnt particularly high why is the doctor prevaricating either put you on low dose BP medication or say you don’t need any. The insurance won’t cover preexisting conditions, you could always take the risk yourself and rely on the Euro medical card for treatment.
If I felt well it wouldn't stop me going to Italy we have annual Travel Insurance as part of Home and Contents no problem for stable existing conditions

Siope Tue 23-Apr-24 19:59:00

It’s for the pair of us, we have a joint account there for household bills. And yes, sorry, it’s a Co-op Everyday Extra account.

Siope Tue 23-Apr-24 19:59:56

That was for Primrose.

Staysure are pretty good for people with existing health conditions and very helpful

Try ‘InsuranceWith’ www.insurancewith.com/

You need to try online first. The chances are they will say no BUT they will invite you to leave your telephone number and they will get back to you. When I last insured with them 6 months ago, I paid £75 for a week in Italy. As I’d previously been quoted at least double, I was rather happy. (I was a year away from a cancer procedure).

Stay sure said they couldn’t quite for Himself. He’s on chemotherapy for cancer. He’s asleep now so I’ll ask him in the morning who insured (just) him when we went to Málaga in November. It’s an annual policy and cost £1,500. He is 71y. And hopes to be able to use it again this summer, all being well. 🤞
My policy is still with Stay sure.

This company was recommended to me by a friend last weekend.
You have to join the organisation, and be under 74 to take the insurance out but after that there's no upper age limit.

I used to be with Staysure, I went from an annual policy, to a single one and then they said: "You have too many conditions, we can't insure you".
I then went to Spectrum, who were so helpful.

Much depends on whether you are awaiting investigations. They will not insure you until you have the results.
The other thing you need to be aware of is that you must be absolutely honest and transparent, because if you need to claim, they will go over your medical record with a fine tooth comb.
I have claimed twice, once with Staysure and once with Spectrum. The customer service from Spectrum was excellent, Staysure not so good.

Spectrum insured me to go to New York, despite me having had a heart attack six months previously and very high BP. My premium was high, but I got to go on holiday. However, I was extremely rigourous when filling out the application. I was not taking any chances.

Staysure

Although hindsight is brilliant it’s advisable to take out insurance as soon as you book a holiday, that way you are covered if anything 7nforseen stops you going. Good luck with your search.

Awaiting diagnosis and tests goes against me on insurance applications.

I would agree with that. We got caught out by that once. Thankfully we had enough time before going on holiday to get it sorted.

The lady on the phone had a drop box. DH didnt fit the drop box, as we didnt know at that point, the exact correct medical name to tell her, as the diagnosis hadnt been completed.

fancythat Tue 23-Apr-24 21:29:36

From what I remember, DH already had insurance. But we needed to update their details.

Shinamae Tue 23-Apr-24 21:34:32

Second year I’ve got mine with Staysure. I took it out a few weeks ago because I’m going on a holiday on the 29th of this month however I had a scan recently which revealed I have two kidney stones so I rang Staysure and they put another £6 on my Premium so happy with that…

Davida1968 Tue 23-Apr-24 22:05:21

We found the British Insurers Brokers Association to be very helpful indeed for us. They are a "non-proft" organisation. They can refer you to helpful companies who specialise in travel insurance and medical issues. (No pressure & no hassles, in our experience.) Phone number and details are easily available online. Worth trying?

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 24-Apr-24 03:18:45

We use Saga, they cover us for pre existing conditions, we get annual cover for Europe only and because I now have a couple of health problems as well as MrOops the cost has shot up to almost £1000 for the 2 of us.
I’m not sure what would happen if we were waiting for medical treatment and wanted to go on holiday though, we would have to phone them and find out.
No use going online for quotes when you have various health conditions .

Jane43 Wed 24-Apr-24 04:15:50

We always use Columbus Direct. You fill in the application on line which includes a health declaration of preexisting conditions.

Grammaretto Wed 24-Apr-24 05:38:12

I insured through my bank, RBS. I pay about £20 pm for worldwide insurance plus an upfront surcharge c£75 for being 75.
I don't have declarable health issues.
It was reassuring when I went to NZ in January and I will be travelling in Europe in June.
I may cancel it after that.

Curlywhirly Wed 24-Apr-24 08:14:09

We were insured for many years with M and S - DH had a heart bypass in his 40s and has to have insurance for this existing condition. However, last year M and S said they could no longer insure him (no idea why). After a little searching we insured with Avanti, who have renewed his insurance this year too, with no problems. Not sure what it cost, but think it was about £400-£500 for the year for both of us (Europe only).

Marydoll Wed 24-Apr-24 08:20:15

Oops, I agree about it being useless going online for quotes. When I did phone, the agent always had to speak to a manager.

SAGA was another company, who declined to insure me.
