How much are you prepared to pay for Hotel breakfast?

I felt taken advantage of when we thought breakfast was included in a hotel in the south of France, but then say our room was charged 17 Euros x 2 when we paid the bill. It was a continental breakfast of cold cuts and rather plain bread with some tinned fruit on offer.

Normally my DH doesn't eat breakfast at all, and I am a toast and coffee type. We never usually pay for breakfast at hotels. I will often purchase a granola bar or muffin and have a coffee in my room. Most hotels now have coffee and tea in room.

BTW, I'm not sure what a full-English is. Can someone explain?

DD2 and I enjoy City Breaks and never book any meals in our Hotel. We go out for brunch, then drinks and cocktails tide us over until dinner.

I’ll confess here that I re-located an ashtray from the Ritz nearly 30 years ago. The waiter seemed to love our NE accents and plied us with wine, topping us up everytime he walked by - he even helped me put the said item into my bag!
It’s a cheap, pot thing - probably cheaply made, knowing they’d be stolen or re-located as I like to put it!

Egg, fried or scrambled, Bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomato. You may also be served baked beans, hash browns and, if you’re really lucky, fried bread.

Full English is basically bacon, eggs (cooked however you like) sausages, black pudding, mushrooms and grilled tomato.
Some like to add baked beans, fried bread, hash browns and whatever else takes their fancy.

Sounds like a heart attack on a plate? That’s why it’s usually reserved for high days and holidays!

I think we pay about twice your prices here. Think yourselves lucky! A small cup of coffee is around $5.50 without any food.

Travelling as a couple or single can be expensive in a touristy area, tour groups get a package for much less, even in the UK a nice 4 star hotel is going to be £200 a night + dinner it can easily add up to £300 total, overseas it can be a lot more.

I don’t know why people think you should pay less for a cooked breakfast than a meal at lunch or dinner as it’s still a meal. Good quality bacon, sausage, eggs are actually quite expensive now

This is true JaneJudge - and really top hotels make their own croissants, breads and pastries, grow their own herbs - may even make their own sausages.

My mouth is watering with all this talk of 'real' breakfasts. I love cooked breakfasts but unfortunately they don't love me any more

I am-just back from a conference held in a UK university. The self service breakfast was really good.
Juice, cereals, fresh fruit ( whole), full English, pastries, toast etc. I don’t know what it cost as it was included. For students it was advertised at £4.50.
Some of ended up eating in an unusual order, the hot course first, but you could have gone up several times to get whatever you wanted in whatever order you liked.
Lunch was not provided. Some people took a banana away but that’s all.

30 euros sounds far too much to pay for breakfast.

Depends where you are eating it. If it is an upmarket hotel in town centre or a country house hotel with a large estate to visit and a spa, then there are very high overhead costs that will be spread over all their prices and 30 euros for breakfast is not unreasonable. We recently spent a couple of nights in a 5 star hotel with a spa and the breakfast cost £25.

If I stayed in a B&B and they charged that much, I would think it exorbitant.
