Snootiness about holiday destinations

Do you find there can a be a ā€˜snootiness’ about certain holiday destinations? I was with a group of people recently and mentioned we’re about to go to on holiday to Lanzarote, a place we love. One of the group looked right down her nose and said ā€˜Oh that wouldn’t be my idea of a holiday, but I suppose there’s plenty of fish and chip shops there’! I asked if she’d ever been to Lanzarote … no, she hasn’t; she prefers a gite in rural France.

It seems to me there’s a snobbery about some places. Doesn’t bother me ā€˜cos I love Lanzarote - it’s got far more about it than people realisešŸ˜ŽšŸŒžšŸ’ƒšŸ»

Take no notice of any of them. Your holiday is what suits you and your family. So long as you enjoy it that is all that matters. We had an old yacht and used to sail for most of our holidays, which was really camping on water. We loved sailing itself and visiting all sorts of places, but we did our own cooking , shopping etc. We used to play scrabble and cards in the evenings, and met lots of other sailors from all over The minute you mention that you sail , you got a lot of people thinking you were rich, and quite envious in style of comments. But we had our ups and downs of course, with miserable weather or stuck somewhere with no one else about or climbing down ladders with shopping etc. But we also had lovely times sailing in silence and being part of the scenery watching gannets diving in the early morning. It gave us many happy memories and I treasure them now.Dont let such miseries spoil your enjoyment

We've been to Lanzarote several times and loved it. We hired a car for a couple of days and went around the island visiting the volcanic sites and the artist's house and gallery etc. Really interesting. Our hotel had a view of Los Gigantes. Beautiful.

I went to Butlins in Bogner over twenty years ago. The children loved it which was the point of the exercise. As for me, I have never drunk so much gin ether before or after.

Sounds brilliant. I love the English seaside holiday - fish and chips on Brighton Pier, the ghost train at Blackpool fun fair, penny slot machines, candy floss, sticks of rock in Paignton.

I went to Lanzarote 30 yrs ago it was one of the cleanest places I ever went too. Definitely no fish and chips shops where I stayed I would have liked it if there was.

Thanks for all your commentssmile Yes, we’ve actually travelled more widely than the person I referred to! I wouldn’t dream of making disparaging, derogatory remarks about someone’s choice of holiday destination … particularly if I’d never been there myself. It shows small-mindedness on her part really.

As you say Primrose there’s a great deal of artistic history and culture in Lanzarote which many people just don’t know about, so they go with the lazy ā€˜Lanzagrote’ trope! Hey hošŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Manrique had a massive influence on how the island adapted to tourism.

I love how they don’t allow highrise properties and hotels. I also love that there are strict rules that houses must be white with blue shutters on the coast and green shutters inland.

To whoever said there are golden beaches too, we did see one but it was tiny with imported sand.

Who cares? I mean I would just laugh if someone said something like that to me and comment how snobbish it sounded.

Yes some people can choose to look down on someone elses choies from holiday destinations to choice of loo paper, but they only show themselves up and you are on the loral high ground.

By the wya we are just back rom a holiday in a gite in rural Normandy blush

I had fish and chips from a kiosk on Llandudno pier two weeks ago and they were so good.

Snobs are so silly and rather pathetic.

Aveline Sun 01-Sept-24 15:31:44

I quite like snobs. I find them hilarious and usually try to wind them up.

If you visit again, Playa de Papagayo has beautiful golden sands.

Playa de Famara on the other side is golden too and Windsurfers' beach and - but very windy!
Other beaches are yellow too and we didn't see any black sands, perhaps we weren't in that area.

Twinnytwin: I'm surprised you had a view of Los Gigantes from a hotel in Lanzarote. Los Gigantes is on the west coast of Tenerife. There are several islands between Lanzarote and Tenerife. Just saying. Maybe you were staying in Tenerife? We have had many lovely holidays there, near Los Gigantes!

Best holiday we ever had was at seahouses not far from us in Northumberland. I was pregnant at the time and didn’t want to go far had a great time fish and chips plenty of sunshine and lots of memories.

Just returned from costa Teguise in Lanzarote. Our third visit with our adult children and grandchildren. We all love it! really pretty and lovely people and food. Also a nice breeze so you can actually enjoy been out in the sun, on the beach, in the sea and in the pool. Far nicer than having to hide under a sun shade all holiday because it is too hot.

I loved Butlins at Bognor, despite thinking it was everything I hate, all rolled into one, before I went.
I'd recommend it to anyone.

I also loved Lanzarote.

Astitchintime Sun 01-Sept-24 16:35:30

What a horrible thing to say to anyone! Sounded like the sort of person who looks down on anyone and everyone and the OP stating she was off to Lanzarote was yet another opening for the bitchiness!
I hope LizzieDrip has a fabulous holiday flowers

We always go to a different area of Wales, such beauty everywhere.
Each to his own holiday destination, whatever makes you happy.

BigBopper Sun 01-Sept-24 16:51:20

I have a so called friend who I am trying to drop and is the same as the people the poster mentioned. When she asks me where I am going for a holiday I tell her, she then tells me she would hate to go there and then goes on to tell me where they are going on holiday and how much it cost. Even though I think my holiday will be much better than hers I would never say anything. I think it is the height of rudeness to say anything nasty about another person's decision, be it holidays, clothes or anything else.

There are always people who like to put others down just for the sake of it. I try and stay away from them if possible as I think they are unhappy in their lives.

I remember going to Butlins Skegness in 1963 and had the most fantastic time, but then everyone went to Butlins in those days. I don't know what it is like now but if my family said to me they were having a weeks holiday at Butlins I would be there with bells on even though I am nearly 82.

I am very snotty about people who go to stay in run-down old houses in the middle of fields in France.

We had friends who after years of boasting finally perusaded us to go to their second home there for a short stay.

It was in the middle of nowhere, they made such a fuss about the food which consisted of cheap supermarket bread and cheese mostly, salad in a bag, but it was French don't you know? Nothing in the supermarket except, you guessed, cheap bread and cheese.

The house was grotty, full of junk (French antique don't you know!) and had a leaky roof and shower that didn't work.

I just didn't get it, but there you are... horses for courses I suppose.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 17:58:32

Oh yes, go to Butlins if the opportunity comes along BigBopper

Spotlessly clean, lovely food, and great entertainment.

Witzend Sun 01-Sept-24 18:10:42

keepingquiet, a very Francophile/foodie BiL of mine honestly practically has a heart attack if anyone buys - or suggests buying - baguettes from a French supermarket. No, you must get up at the crack of dawn and get them from the boulangerie.

The entertainment was first class, the GS’s wanted to see Stephen Mulhern so we all went, he was spectacular.

The fairgrounds (inside and out) swimming complex nearly as good as Centre Parcs, crazy golf, spa, playgrounds, various restaurants and bars.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 01-Sept-24 18:26:27

I was pleasantly surprised, as it’s not my usual holiday destination.

The GC do not want to go abroad again, they told their cousins and DS is going next year (not his idea of a holiday either)

The only holiday parks our AC have been to is Centre Parc’s here and Euro Camp in France.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 18:33:28

I was shocked, as I had gone as part of my job, with a very jolly work colleague, and a man with a learning disability.

I had girded up my loins, expecting the very worst,as we were going to see Chico from x factor, too, just to add to my misery. smile

Chico was wonderful, all of the staff loved him, and he was very, very handsome in person.

He made a real fuss of our gentleman.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 01-Sept-24 18:53:41

I've not been to Lanzarote, so I can't comment, but as others have said on this thread, I wouldn't be able to resist a little teasing: " I loved the Hermitage in St Petersburg, but it wasn't a patch on The Bellagio in Las Vegas.."
