Snootiness about holiday destinations

Do you find there can a be a ā€˜snootiness’ about certain holiday destinations? I was with a group of people recently and mentioned we’re about to go to on holiday to Lanzarote, a place we love. One of the group looked right down her nose and said ā€˜Oh that wouldn’t be my idea of a holiday, but I suppose there’s plenty of fish and chip shops there’! I asked if she’d ever been to Lanzarote … no, she hasn’t; she prefers a gite in rural France.

It seems to me there’s a snobbery about some places. Doesn’t bother me ā€˜cos I love Lanzarote - it’s got far more about it than people realisešŸ˜ŽšŸŒžšŸ’ƒšŸ»

Had great holidays in Lanzarote many years ago. Lovely and warm in Jan/Feb.
We had a motor home and have travelled far and wide in it, but as we’ve got older, we decided to change it for a caravan. We’re much happier because we have the car for getting around, or having day trips. We’ve found some great sites and enjoy going as often as we can. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but we love it. No rushing down for breakfast, just a lovely leisurely morning. We mostly eat out for lunch and dinner, but if we don’t feel like it, we can soon rustle something up. There are adult only sites too and they’re perfect during the school summer holidays. We too have had snobby remarks Lizzie, but we ignore it.

Yes I travel to the Middle East a lot using my son in Dubai as a base, Dubai is amazing as are all the other emirates and Oman, I would walk down the street at midnight carrying cash in any one of those places but don’t go out after dark here at home

And just down the coast there is Southwold that’s real snobbery. Six weeks in the summer ( maybe8) it’s Green wellies Waitrose deliveries and lots of ā€œ air kissesā€ .

Someone upthread mentioned the Bellagio in Las Vegas. My favorite was the Luxor.

First time I went to Las Vegas I thought i would hate it. I was presenting at a hospitality conference so it was all expenses paid. I loved it! Then when I got the chance to work at the Uni of Nevada (just outside Vegas) for a year I jumped at it. It was a glitzy year and I got involved in the Motivational Speaker circuit. Could probably have made a good career at that. It was an interesting insight into American culture. I still have a US bank account.

What a rude person, how arrogant! And ignorant!!

Go to Lanzarote every winter for a couple of weeks, plenty of walks with breathtaking landscapes of volcanoes, dramatic cliffs, and small Canarian villages selling fresh fish dishes to die for.
We love it.

I didn't realise there was a "snooty" attitude towards holidays in Lanzorote. We went to a adults only hotel on Costa Tequise in 2017, a year after an amazing holiday in Tenerife.
Sadly it was horrendous. Hotel was such a disappointment and the wind (it was far more than a breeze)!!!!!!. It was beginning of September and I don't think we managed a whole day by the pool, despite buying giant pegs to keep towels on sunloungers. Managed a few walks along the beach but wind meant it was never pleasant enough to sit on the beach. Left flip flops by the pool one day, went for a swim, got blown away, only found one lol.
Food in hotel was excellent but we retired to our room after dinner every evening, rather than taking an evening stroll around the local bars. There was no point doing my hair the 2 weeks we were there. Maybe we were just unlucky but I hated it.
As for Benidorm, my parents spent a few winters there in the late 90s, it doesn't have a great reputation but I think if you stay away from the strip, there's more to the resort than English bars and cafƩs.
But each to their own

Nothing wrong with fish and chips except the price nowadays (health freaks look away).

LOVE Lanzarote - been there loads of times. If that makes me a chav then so be it!

You and me both! We were in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, again for two weeks in July. So many lovely restaurants that we always find new ones each time we go.

The landscape is very arid and the resort manager told us the island hasn't had any rain for four years.
The beaches nearby were lovely white sand.
We had some thoughtful conversations with the locals and they are more than happy to welcome visitors.

Never heard of Lanzarote, where on earth is it? I can’t think of anywhere in this part of the world that people are snobby about- perhaps Kuta beach has a bit of a reputation but not that much.

It's one of the Spanish Canary Islands, nanna8

Never heard of Kuta Beach

Omg so many fat fingers and autocorrect in that post šŸ™ˆ

I’m going to admit to something now. My parents were snobby about caravan park holidays and then when I had kids I was snobby about them too but all the cars a park holidays we had, the children loved more than anything especially the club house entertainment. I suspect the inherited snobbery for that may have been cured

JaneJudge Mon 02-Sept-24 14:28:07

Is St Osyth one of the places that become an island with the tide?

Lol! And I hate the appropriation of "chavi" ( as I was called as a child - it means little or dear one). I do know you meant it ironically!

CarS Mon 02-Sept-24 14:17:54

I'm guessing rudeness is her forte anyway. Dismiss!

Anyone who behaves like this (OP) should get a Paddington style hard stare, then be ignored. They usually get their come-uppance at some point! If you create some sort of snobby hierarchy in your own head, someone will come along to make you feel inferior. If you simply take interest and pleasure in what others are doing, you and they will be happier.
I hadn't realised there was this snobbery about Lanzarote until a relative told me she was retiring there. Her somewhat defensive attitude alerted me, so I asked a friend, and was told about it! My relative loves her life there. We don't go away much, after this thread I am amused to wonder what the snobs might make of my choices!

Caleo Mon 02-Sept-24 11:09:57

There is possibly some snobbery also about what sort of dog you choose. I reckon rescued greyhounds are U dogs, while large bitey dogs are non-U

Best holiday we ever had was at seahouses not far from us in Northumberland. I was pregnant at the time and didn’t want to go far had a great time fish and chips plenty of sunshine and lots of memories.

We had two wonderful holidays in Beadnell, just slightly inland from Seahouses, glorious coastline, lots of lovely family friendly pubs and great castles!

Caleo Mon 02-Sept-24 11:06:57

Doodledog, how well do I understand you! I increasingly watch something easy on TV , and forgive myself for doing so.

Cossy Mon 02-Sept-24 11:03:48

Take off without the others, just DH, our dog and the occasional friends

Yes, class and status in modern Britain, an interesting subject.
We can't afford expensive holidays because we have made some mistakes and also supported family.
Because of the dog we spent 3 nights at a caravan site in Essex.
Tremendous value. The dog was happy, lots of ducks to chase and not too far in the car.
And we went to Clacton for the day.
But in some company I keep quiet about that.

We bought a holiday lodge (static large two bed caravan) last March, in St Osyth.

As we have 4 other adults living with us, we take off most Friday nights, with our spaniel and have a few days and nights peace.

It’s quiet, spotlessly clean and so relaxing.

We’ve travelled to many other countries in our lives, embraced them all, but love our ā€œboltholeā€ more than anything.

*keepingquiet*, a very Francophile/foodie BiL of mine honestly practically has a heart attack if anyone buys - or suggests buying - baguettes from a French supermarket. No, you must get up at the crack of dawn and get them from the boulangerie.

No, you must get up at the crack of dawn and get them from the boulangerie.............where the staff will instantly recognise you as a tourist and sell you yesterdays baguette - so dry you could use it as a baseball bat. And I am not kidding either - it happened to me.

We stayed in a gite belonging to a famous friend of Bil. It was horrendous. Mice droppings everywhere, mice in the beds, no doors, communal showers.

We wondered when he had last visited. He turned up, lit the fire, changed out of his business suit into his pjs and opened the wine and suddenly everything was all right. It is people who make good memories.
