Feeling shocked at myself

I've gone and booked us a wee holiday to Jersey next month. I'm usually a person who books months or even years ahead. I just suddenly thought that this is why I retired so we could have holidays at short notice.
Anyway, Jersey looked interesting and a bit different from our usual sort of place. A neighbour who'd lived there recommended a hotel that would suit us and, Bob's your uncle, it's done! Am still in shock.

Have a lovely time we absolutely love Jersey and go for a couple of weeks every summer

Friend of mine used to visit regularly as she had relatives there and another friend who went a few years ago recommended a visit to the war tunnels and museum, built by the Germans during their occupation .

Seeing the programme about the channel islands at war is what made me suddenly look them up as a holiday destination. Should be fascinating but sad to visit the tunnels.

Ooo, good choice Aveline. Jersey is what I call a gentle place, lots of tea rooms and gardens to stumble across, and a winery too. St. Helier has some good shops, two nice high-end department stores called de Gruchy and Voisins.
I often used to spend a day or two over there when we lived in France. You could always do a boat trip to Saint Malo for a French fix, it's only 1hr 30 mins.
Have a lovely time!

We went to Jersey last year, first ever trip to the Channel Islands, I was amazed at how small it is, only 5 by 9 miles, Isle of Wight's huge by comparison. We stayed in St Brelades Bay, very lovely. I was ecstatic when the pilot announced flying time as 31 minutes (Gatwick) I no longer enjoy flying. Wishing you an enjoyable holiday it's small, nevertheless pretty and interesting.

I’ve only been to Jersey once, well done for being being utterly spontaneous and for picking a great destination.

Lovely food, little road train around part of the coast, War Tunnels, Tour bus, boat trips, Gerald Durrell’s Zoo, so much to do and see on a tiny Island. Enjoy xx

Enjoy, we did.

The war museum is a must (tunnels)

My brother worked in jersey years ago and now 80 still says he’s going back there one day. ( has early onset dementia) he has inspired me to go one day and I hope I will. You enjoy it he raved about it.

Thanks all. It sounds exactly the sort of place we want to go. So many interesting things to do. I didn't even research it. Just booked it. I don't think I've ever been so impulsive.

St Elizabeth castle in St Helier is also worth a visit very interesting. The bus service on Jersey is pretty good for getting around you cannot use a UK bus pass there but prices are fairly cheap especially if you pay by debit card. Remember to get rid of your Jersey pounds before you leave they are not legal tender here. They still have £1 notes there.

Aveline Sun 11-May-25 21:17:08

Gosh I hadn't realised that about the currency. Thanks.

OldFrill Sun 11-May-25 22:56:33

Aveline

Gosh I hadn't realised that about the currency. Thanks.

Jersey currency is Sterling so just take British currency, they have their own notes & coins which aren't accepted in the UK.

We really enjoyed the food in the restaurants & the market at St Helier.

For anyone else thinking of Jersey, you don't need a passport to go there. A driving licence will do.

Aveline Mon 12-May-25 08:49:29

I was just thinking that and wondering why the travel company hadn't asked for our passport numbers. Thanks.

Thanks grannyivy for mentioning 🇬🇬 Guernsey!
Rival island, a lot smaller, lots of historic stuff and also a wonderful holiday destination.

Aveline Mon 12-May-25 10:49:41

Guernsey next maybe!

dogsmother Mon 12-May-25 10:56:55

I liked guernsey very much. 20 mph speed limit, all very gentle with some lovely walks. You can probably get a ferry over Aveline.

Aveline Mon 12-May-25 11:17:12

Will certainly check it out. This may be the start of several channel islands trips.

escaped Mon 12-May-25 13:58:05

Agree, Guernsey is lovely too.
