Is there a difference between watching brutality and reading of brutality? There are those who wouldn't believe the Haulicaust happened if it had only been spoken of in books

The young do not read books as previous generations did, if this film had not been made the book shops would not be packed with readers wanting to read about slavery.

This film may help a young generation understand how easy it can be to dehumanise people because of their race, colour or creed

An incredible experience although I am not sure I would want to watch it again. I'll certainly never watch Gone with the Wind again. Everyone should see this movie. It's been a much bigger hit in America than over here (for obvious reasons). Something wrong with the voting system if American Hustle carries off the awards.

I am buying the book rather than seeing the film. Read Schindler's List rather than watch the film. Not sure what can be gained by watching brutality except lots of money for the producers.

Saw it on Sunday afternoon, in an unusually packed cinema. It is indeed very moving, and utterly bleak - no light relief at all. I read that some black groups are unhappy with the film, calling it, 'torture porn'.

I'm still feeling a bit haunted by the film, so it was powerful. I hope it leads to deeper discussion, and understanding about the lasting impact of slavery and brutality.

Not on at our cinema till next week. Mark Kermode has said it will become a classic of the cinema. Can't wait to see it.
