Has anyone else watched this? I quite enjoyed it (despite Annie's dreadful wig). There were echoes of Catherine Cookson and it would have been nice to see Sean Bean in it, but there were twists and turns in the ploy and the costumes were good.

I gave up after about 20 minutes. It looked like someone had just imported an American settlers movie story and set it in Yorkshire. They could not even get convincing accents. Too Catherine Cookson for me.

Not sure....I'll give it another go next week.

We enjoyed it, will definitely watch next week. Agree about the wig though!

I watched it too. Not sure yet though.

I'm going to give it another go next week.

Tegan Fri 08-Jan-16 12:40:26

Which channel? Looked for it last night but couldn't find it.

It was on ITV Tegan, I enjoyed but kept expecting covered wagons to come over the hilltops..grin I'll give it another go next week.

It was awful. I stopped watching it when they descended low enough to show a child being beaten up by a man.

It's rubbish. And yes. Definitely Catherine Cookson-ish.

gillybob Fri 08-Jan-16 13:36:46

Nothing like Catherine Cookson jings

I didn't hear one single Geordie accent in the whole thing.

"du yu know wharra mean like?"

CC =lord of the manor or the owner of a pit's son falls for poor (but pretty) girl. Girl swirls her skirts and heaves her ample bosom. She gets pregnant and outcast. Lord of the manor finds her. They all live happily ever after in "the big hoos" smile

Never read her novels but seem to recall being fascinated by her autobiography a long time ago. Worth a read [must have got it from a library cause don't seem to own a copy].

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-Jan-16 14:13:23

Accent apart, it feels Catherine Cookson-ish. But a bit more ambitious. grin

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-Jan-16 14:14:14

(or any of those chick-lit for the older lady authors)

ninathenana Fri 08-Jan-16 15:24:52

Ads didn't entice me to even give it a try.

Tegan Fri 08-Jan-16 15:35:18

I saw a trailer and noticed the actress from Call the Midwife which put me off. Sometimes I like a new series to have a cast that I don't associate with other programmes. I'll still give it a go tonight [if I can find it; have realised that I rarely watch ITV these days].

Nelliemoser Fri 08-Jan-16 16:04:56

Gillybob* Yes that's Catherine Cookson I reckon this story will end like that.

Nelliemoser Fri 08-Jan-16 16:07:16

There wasn't even any tumble weed bouncing along t'moors.! grin

Alea Fri 08-Jan-16 16:20:50

Surely a "Yorkshire Western" is called a Northern? grin

rosesarered Fri 08-Jan-16 19:21:30

A story of mud, boots and strong ( not over clean) characters, dealing out random violence, yes, definitely a Western, even if set on t'moors.

TerriBull Fri 08-Jan-16 19:38:57

Like a bad Catherine Cookson "eee it's grim up north" grin Not watching anymore, life's too short!

petra Fri 08-Jan-16 20:18:00

And not a whippet in sight.

Tegan Fri 08-Jan-16 21:14:21

...here's one..looking sad at the lack of opportunites for whippets on prime time television...sad

Nana3 Fri 08-Jan-16 23:32:22

Lovely photo, is his tail better?
I went to the Ribblehead viaduct last summer for a walk and read the story of the navvy settlement there. I was looking forward to Jericho but it was too violent for me, I'm a whimp when it comes to this sort of thing.
When there's a sympathetic character you sort of know they'll come to a bad end.

Tegan Sat 09-Jan-16 00:46:50

Just watched it and loved it. Hattie's tail is ok; it's Alea's Grace that has a poorly tail [although my previous whippet Fliss lost the end of her tail; they have such long, thin tails they're just an accident waiting to happen]. I think Hattie enjoyed it also although she did sleep through most of it. Found it fascinating to see what it must have been like when they were building the canals and railroads in this country.

cornergran Sat 09-Jan-16 05:48:32

Watched it last evening. Not for me. The violence to the child and the 'burial' just wasn't enjoyable or interesting. DH will watch. I'll read.

J52 Sat 09-Jan-16 07:28:46

I watched it. But, I don't get how a homeless woman, suddenly had a house(shed with three rooms) that she could turn into a loading.
What did I miss?

They were all very clean. Apart from when the explosion happened. I did see them washing in the stream. The weather looked lovely!!
