Female TV Presenters and their dresses

Men wear suits with buttoned up shirts and ties, women mostly wear smart day dresses. I suppose you could view it as a sort of uniform, but I think it is smart and entirely appropriate. Slim trousers and jackets are what I also often see. No problem with that either.

It's the skin tight ones that I see as unflattering.

I think Carol (weathergirl) on BBC Breakfast always looks very nice - I like the dresses she wears they fit properly and she doesn't bulge. Naga wears the most atrocious colourways at times - she seems to favour primary colours which can be very stark. Louise comes and goes- she keep wearing this awful drab frock with what looks like Aran panels on it which does nothing for her. as for Steph she is the main culprit I think for wearing skin tights dresses and trousers- not very elegant.

I suppose someone will tell us off now for discussing female journalists' clothing as we should be concentrating on more serious concerns and we don't pay the same attention to the men. Consider it said.

I think it was an Australian male newsreader, who wore the same suit every day for a year and no one noticed. I feel sorry for the guys, their clothes are so boring.

Boring, maybe, but they don't have to think about what to put on! And the custom of changing your clothes according to the time of day or the event seems to be crumbling except for things like Ascot or a formal ball. Pyjamas on the school run? Job interviews in a hoodie? Tshirts and jeans all the time?

I remember travelling on a bus to my student holiday job with a friend back in the early seventies and she commented while people watching out the window: "On the whole, aren't clothes horrible?"

I think it's still true. Whenever I'm in a crowd and people-watching it always strikes me that very few people look "good"—smart and attractive, or simply 'appropriate' in clothes that suit them.

I think it depends where you are, Bags. I like sitting on the Tube in London looking at other people's get-ups. There does seem to be more flair and style in our capital city than the rest of the country.

As for news presenters, I think the idea is to wear something plain do as to not detract from the news or weather.

There is a regional weather presenter who sometimes wears a tight black top. black leather skirt and black rimmed glasses. A bit 'phwoar' according to DH!

We have been guilty of critical 'people watching' while on holiday abroad and very few holiday makers get top marks. However the locals - young mums, office workers, older people usually get it 'just right'. No wonder the waiters have such success with the girls - in their light, tight trousers, crisp shirts, shiny shoes, when the contrast with the grunge look, favoured by the Young Brits Abroad, is so stark.

We are spared the full picture on TV when the presenters sit behind a desk (probably trakkie bottoms and trainers under a smart top) but the weather girls are on full view and generally appear to be pregnant and swathed in coloured bandages. I'm not usually complimentary about politicians but must say that most of the female ones seem to get it right in their dress and jacket combos - feminine and business like.

Nowadays the female newsreaders get up and walk around, so they can't wear the trackie bottoms any more, if they ever did.

I've lost count of the number of times DH says, 'She's a funny shape. Is it the dress?'

And I reply, 'No. She's pregnant!'

Or in Victoria Coren Mitchell's case....'Has she had it yet? I can't tell with that dress she's wearing.'

MEN!!

Kirsty Wark and Sian Williams always look good to me. I think it's the crispness and business-like look of their clothes. Some of the others seem to favour ever-tightening dresses, which look two sizes too small and show all the lumps and bumps!
I actually think I take more notice of what they are saying if they look the part. And yes, Granny23 I agree, Nicola Sturgeon is very well dressed as a politician.

merlot I'm with your DH VCM has such a generous bust and if you note they always used a camera angle that had the podium as a shield for her bump. I had to google to see when baby actually arrived

My OH laughs most mornings when either Naga or louise are presenting and I say: What are you wearing ? I don't care about Naga as I don't like her. But louise is so lovely I just want to take her shopping. She has a good height and a lovely figure.

Kirsty Wark often wore some most peculiar outfits on Newsnight! The skirts often looked homemade (nothing wrong with that, but homemade badly) and nothing went with anything else.

I never used to notice what presenters were wearing until recently, but yes, I too have noticed the spray on dresses, super clingy, like something from 'Madmen' series.They all seem to wear them so it must be the tv wardrobe people who supply them ( from orders on high?) Not always well fitting either.

Yes, it's always the same style, isn't it? Way too tight and clinging in all the wrong places. Not flattering. Yes to Carol Kirkwood-she's lovely. And I like Naga too-I think she's individual and stylish. I love her cropped hair.

Carols dresses are a bit tight, you can see that shes well corseted underneath. Shes lovlely though. I love Steph McGovern with her tight trousers and dresses, shes slim enough to wear them. Naga's gorgeous too despite her strong colours, not like Louise who always looks washed out in her choice of outfits. The men always seem to wear baggy, creased-at-the -crotch trousers, surely there must be some expensive material that doesn't crease easily. Eamon Holmes is one with creased trousers and baggy jackets, I love him to bits too.
I look forward to seeing all the presenters each morning as I have my morning cuppa.

The thing is with VCM that the series may have been filmed before she had the baby but is being shown after its arrival.

You want to see smart, slick, informed, competent journalists in the mornings? Forget BBC Breakfast then and switch to ITV Sunrise. THAT is TV journalism at is very best. They come ready prepared and dont have to rely on autocue. They dress well and look business like. They speak correctly and succinctly. They inform - which is what we want at that time of day.

Sorry, I said ITV...I was wrong! It's on Sky News. Eamonn Holmes is usually the anchorman, which is why I assumed it was ITV. Senior moment!
