Now being reported on the BBC website so that's no more Bake Off for me then sad

Rosina Tue 13-Sept-16 11:44:11

Well said, Rosieroe and Nankate; how unkind can you be for goodness sake?. Mary Berry is an elderly woman making the most of her time, skills - and appearance. She is to be admired and encouraged, not slapped down with spiteful comments. I assume that the unkind ones are all perfect icons, with thick shiny luxuriant hair, their own gleaming naturally white teeth etc. (Or perhaps not - sour grapes maybe??) I do find that attitude so depressing - I am still on the 'younger side of old', but that sort of talk makes me feel I should shoot myself or crawl away and die as I can't be seen in public unless young and perfect. 'Surprised to see it on Gransnet!

Personally, I think it's had its day and the Beeb know it. Losing Gbbo may actually turn out to be a shrewd move.

I don't think it'll work on a commercial channel. I think it's the type of programme that can only work on Bbc-it has a tweeness about it imho which I doubt would appeal in a commercial setting. Hope I'm wrong, because the formula has worked thus far.

Most of these formulaic programmes lose appeal after a while. Great when fresh but go off the boil, so to speak, after a while.

Masterchef, Gbbo, Interior Design Challenge, Strictly: all gone the same way.

Maybe on C4 Gbbo will become more "niche" and appeal to a new, fresh audience.

Sorry for typo thereblush.

Irma Tue 13-Sept-16 11:49:25

If they have same presenters I'll give it ago. Worst thing is all the breaks on channel 4. Another programme to record so I can fast forward the many breaks they seem to have.

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 11:52:48

They'll have to cut it down even more if they keep to the one hour slot. There'll only be about 45 minutes of actual programme.

Apologies if somebody else has already said this, I've not had time to read all the posts.

Why all the fuss? The BBC don't actually make the programme themselves. Not sure about sport, but apart from news and other Public Service Broadcasting, most is actually made by outside production companies. Sometimes the BBC have ideas and commission programmes, but usually they are approached by outside companies who have had a good idea - I'm guessing that this was the case here as this enables the production companies to sell the series elsewhere. And the spin-off programmes where they talk about what has happened are very like the C4 offerings anyway.

(I would miss sensible Mary and Sparkly-Blue-Paul though if they left, and I like Sue).

So why is the BBC still such a large, expensive organisation? And why is senior management paid as much as the board members of large public companies?

Hate Strictly, GBBO, any cookery, antiques, Let's move to the country (ideally Oz), gardening, game shows, Essex, reality shows/talent competitions. As for Doctors/Corrie/Emmerdale, the storylines at present are diabolical. In short, don't know why I pay my TV licence - apart from Poldark I wouldn't bother to switch on my TV at present.

Marymore Tue 13-Sept-16 12:54:54

Ivthink quite a lot of licence payers are watching GBBO www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/the-great-british-bake-off-2016-viewing-figures-bbc-flagship-show-watched-by-112-million-people-a7208891.html

Like Jane10 I will not bother to watch the new Best Greedy Bakeoff on Channel 4 next year. If Mary B goes it will say a lot about her. I hope she doesn't so we don't lose faith in her. Money isn't everything.

JessM Tue 13-Sept-16 13:26:31

I am just a wee bit entertained that this is bigger news today than Cameron retiring from politics. How the mighty...

Nvella Tue 13-Sept-16 13:27:18

I agree with Nana5ue. It's a great programme, I love all the presenters and the banter between them and I don't think moving to Channel 4 will make a lot of difference. And what's all this about having had its day? It still has whopping ratings.

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 13:28:13

What is there to say about Cameron? Bake Off is much more interesting! grin

JessM Tue 13-Sept-16 13:34:54

So it seems *ana. Or maybe the BBC are overly interested in themselves and their doings.

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 13:38:06

Oh, sorry - thought you meant on GN Jess...

millymouge Tue 13-Sept-16 13:57:40

DH loves GBBO! I usually fall asleep. Can't stand Mel and Sue, can't see the point of them being on the programme. Like Mary Berry but think Paul Hollywood is pompous, and can make some contestants feel small.
If people are interested enough in it I don't think a few ads in a programme will make them not watch. Personally I like ads. Just enough time to top up your glass or do a quick wee. wink

Jawsnana Tue 13-Sept-16 14:04:14

Am I the only person who has never watched a single programme of GBBO ?

Craftycat Tue 13-Sept-16 14:04:49

I'm with Merlot Gran. Love Mel & Sue & very much love Mary-I remember speaking to her back in 80's when I was doing some test cooking for Home & Freezer Digest magazine & she was so lovely & helpful to me. I don't think she is false at all.
Sue is a local girl & has the reputation of being smashing too.
Paul annoys me- so superior.
I do not have a good feeling about it going to channel 4- I never watch adverts anyway so will have to record it & whiz through them.
As NONE of the 4 presenters has yet signed with 4 then it is just possible BBC could build a new show round them. Now that's an idea.
( Couldn't stand Bruce Forsyth!Ever )

GrannyO Tue 13-Sept-16 14:10:07

Hope it doesn't mean celebrity bake offs with reality nonentities effing and blinding all over the shop. Tell me one series that 's improved after moving from the Beeb?

Barrowlass Tue 13-Sept-16 14:46:39

Really pleased that good old BBC stuck to their guns and refused to pay such and enormous amount. Who's bright idea to cut costs and lose BBC's own production teams I wonder?

Phoebes Tue 13-Sept-16 14:58:13

Gillybob - I am an old codger (73) trying to look young and making a pretty good job of it. I see nothing wrong with trying to look your best ,whatever age you are!

JoJo58 Tue 13-Sept-16 14:59:48

I enjoy watching GBBO, Mary berry and Paul Hollywood good cooks in their own right, I love watching the contestants although some are irritating but love it when they make B....'s ups, thats what it's all about really, Sue and Mel make some funny comments and faces, everyone has a choice as to what they watch, like all tv we all have different likes and dislikes, I hope it doesn't change when it goes to channel 4, but it won't be the same for sure.

Cerocer13 Tue 13-Sept-16 15:30:43

Well said Rosieroe, I agree entirely with you. Nothing wrong with an older woman trying to make the best of herself. We might be old on the outside, but not on the inside. If she was some o,d Trollope, she would be criticised too. You just can't win with some people.

vanpopple Tue 13-Sept-16 15:35:38

Oh my god - who are these idiots who say 'im not watching it then'??? Oh yeah cos its SO hard to press number four instead of number 1...

Honestly i couldnt believe a so-called impartial website like this moans, so you all moan about TV licence now channel 4...
You all need to get a life, unfortunately like all the old age pensioners on here. life goes on and things evolve..

Either move with the times or get off the internet cos nobody cares...

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 15:43:15

Who said this website was impartial? And actually, we don't care what you think! hmm
