Now being reported on the BBC website so that's no more Bake Off for me then sad

Aepgirl Tue 13-Sept-16 18:33:57

I think the biggest change is that the programme will be littered with ads. which will break up the flow. It will obviously be different, but let's see before we condemn it. However, if the Beeb really wants to save money why not get rid of Gary Linnekar (not sure of the spelling). He's well past his sell-by date!

The BBC do worry about the licence payer vanpopple. That's why they are not forking out stupid million dollars for the show.

Peaseblossom Tue 13-Sept-16 18:59:16

I haven't bothered watching it this year at all as I cannot stand any more of Mel and Sue's stupidity. They ruin it for me, especially when Sue says BAKE in her stupid put on voice.

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 19:00:47

Mel's been doing it this year. Perhaps they've decided to swap...

Just had a thought -Channel 4 have spent £25million on a second hand tent and Paul Hollywood. Suckers!

Lewlew Tue 13-Sept-16 19:10:11

Without naming the show, cc back on page 4 got it absolutely right. The BBC (and other channels) buys shows produced by others, and often on spec.

I had a corporate tenant who got a 'contract' to develop an idea after selling it to a production company. It was a chef thingy, but it never made it past the pilot with BBC. She had a composer to create music, people to create all the graphics from scratch, etc. She was getting a good fee herself as writer/producer. We let her 'company' a completely furnished flat. Her husband would come down at weekends. This was for 6 months.

So these shows are gambles for the production companies and producers they decide to take a chance on that it will pass muster with the chosen channel. Thankfully, some don't last.

It's the pesky adverts that will do it for me!

hulahoop Tue 13-Sept-16 19:24:03

Just seen on msn all 4 are leaving !

Harris27 Tue 13-Sept-16 19:30:58

My my what a miserable lot you are I love Mary and would miss Paul holly woods twinkling eyes hope I'm half as bright as Mary when I get to her age if o make it!!!long live the bake off think it brings generations together!!!

Jane10 Tue 13-Sept-16 19:56:55

Blimey if all four are leaving it sounds like Top Gear all over again and that was a flop without the original cast.

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 20:00:13

I hope they don't persuade that awful Greg Whatsit to take part - that would be the final straw!

Jane10 Tue 13-Sept-16 20:04:41

I wonder how the ch4 executives are feeling now. Probably 'Oh sh*t'!grin

I am relatively new to Bake Off, having only watched the past three series, so maybe it's still fresh to me. But I love it.

I am so sad that Bake Off is now moving to Channel 4. Quite aside from the fact that it will now be rife with adverts, Channel 4's philosophy appears to be to take a programme format, and after a couple of seasons completely ruin it.

They did it with Coach Trip. First couple of series were nice, with the travellers making friends and seemingly genuinely sorry to be voting people off. A few series in and it became all cliques, backstabbing and bitching.

They did it with Three In A Bed (which then became Four In A Bed). The owners in the first few series all went to each other's B&Bs and gave genuine, honest feedback. Not now. Now they are shown practically dismantling the properties to find a fault, and bitching about every little thing.

They did it with Four Weddings. First few series, the girls seemed nice, friendly and again, gave genuine feedback. The last couple of programmes I watched, they set out to be as nasty and spiteful as possible about each other. I stopped watching when they were destroying the reputations of the caterers of the weddings, all in the name of "entertainment". Seemingly forgetting that the caterers businesses could be adversely affected. And they weren't even part of the programme.

They also did it with Big Brother. The first two series were excellent, with a really good mix of interesting people. It was fascinating to watch how 12 complete strangers managed to co exist and how they were genuinely "afraid" of Big Brother. But then they started putting in "eccentrics" and "characters", whose only aim was to sign up to magazine deals on their departure from the house. And the inevitable bitching and nastiness crept in.

So my prediction for Bake Off, Ch4 style is - younger contestants predominantly, with the bakers being actively encouraged to sabotage the other bakers, with some form of contestant voting system so that they can ensure the older bakers get voted off first, Or with viewers being allowed to vote people off. Just to raise a bit more revenue. Whatever - the programme will be utterly ruined within two series.

It is a sad sad sad day.

WEW do both enjoy the bake off (except for PH in my case). But I think it has run it's course and it is time for something new.

dionysus43 Tue 13-Sept-16 20:29:23

Mary Berry is great , Paul Hollywood is very irritating , on a par with Gregg Wallace !!

TerriBull Tue 13-Sept-16 20:36:46

I'm another who is glad that Sue and Mel are bowing out, I'd like to know whether those who find them annoying are in the majority.

How about bringing Nadiya back she would be a good replacement for those two and could provide the vital link between contestants and judges. She would also appreciate how annoying it must be to have someone prattling in your ear when under pressure and at a crucial stage of creating something very complex.

Deedaa Tue 13-Sept-16 20:41:07

Well the current set up of three rounds is never going to fit into the 45 (if we're lucky) minutes between the ads. There will have to be a voice over in case we don't know what we're watching. Probably bring Steve Jones in to present it - he's been rubbish on Formula 1 so why not? The celebrity specials they are promising next year will be sub Z list "celebrities" and if they aren't doing a new series till 2018 we'll all have forgotten it anyway.

Claudiaclaws Tue 13-Sept-16 21:59:34

I really enjoy Bake Off. Quite like Paul and Mary, but I am sick and tired of Mel and Sue's lewd innuendos. So I am glad they are leaving.

I certainly couldn't stand Bruce Forsyth who was far too full of his own importance and should have been retired long before he bit the bullet. I do, however, like Mary Berry as her comments are invaiably constructive and she always tries to find something nice to say about the contestants' efforts. As for her dress sense, I think it is excellent. I don't want to see an elderly lady in a beige twinset and pearls nor in an outfit slashed to the waist with a skirt half way up her backside.

hermione23 Wed 14-Sept-16 06:42:47

GBBO is going to channel 4, good riddance!!! I wish strictly would go too, I hate it.

Pittcity Wed 14-Sept-16 07:44:02

So Channel 4 have spent 25 million pounds on a tent and a kitchen?

Falconbird Wed 14-Sept-16 08:00:24

I don't like Bake Off. It mostly caters for people with big happy families with big appetites and we don't all have that pleasure anymore. I could never take to Mary Berry. She looks good but obviously with a lot of help from behind the scenes and her appearance could be demoralizing to women of her age who don't have the money or time to look that good.

LullyDully Wed 14-Sept-16 08:02:44

I enjoy it, but think it may have reached a natural end. I always say " Quit while you're winning." Channel 4 can only do it harm in my opinion. I like Channel 4 but not for Bake Off. If Mary has any sense she will quit, but it will depend on her contract. Not bothered about P H.

The trouble with a show moving from BBC to a commercial station is that there are ad breaks and each segment of the show ends with telling the viewer what's coming up in next segment, and then you have ads, then the next segment starts and they feel they have to remind you of what happened only three minutes ago. Which is why I always record anything on a commercial station so I can whizz through these tedious parts.
There are 14 minutes of advertising per hour on commercial terrestrial channels (the maximum by law, more for non-terrestrial) which means that you've immediately 'lost' 25% of the show - take out the 'coming-ups' and 'reminders' and the show content is down to 30 minutes!
Mary Berry charges £20,000 to make an appearance at an event. NanKate you were very lucky to get her for free at your event - this is very rare!
I have spent the day with Mr Hollywood - he was nice enough, but his ego is a tad inflated... but same applies to vast majority of anyone appearing on TV these days.

Lewlew Wed 14-Sept-16 10:09:12

She gets £20k a shot? I have an old cookbook of hers I got in an Oxfam Bookstore and it's signed. Maybe I should eBay it LOL!
