Now being reported on the BBC website so that's no more Bake Off for me then sad

DH loves GBBO! I usually fall asleep. Can't stand Mel and Sue, can't see the point of them being on the programme. Like Mary Berry but think Paul Hollywood is pompous, and can make some contestants feel small.
If people are interested enough in it I don't think a few ads in a programme will make them not watch. Personally I like ads. Just enough time to top up your glass or do a quick wee. wink

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 13:38:06

Oh, sorry - thought you meant on GN Jess...

JessM Tue 13-Sept-16 13:34:54

So it seems *ana. Or maybe the BBC are overly interested in themselves and their doings.

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 13:28:13

What is there to say about Cameron? Bake Off is much more interesting! grin

Nvella Tue 13-Sept-16 13:27:18

I agree with Nana5ue. It's a great programme, I love all the presenters and the banter between them and I don't think moving to Channel 4 will make a lot of difference. And what's all this about having had its day? It still has whopping ratings.

JessM Tue 13-Sept-16 13:26:31

I am just a wee bit entertained that this is bigger news today than Cameron retiring from politics. How the mighty...

Gwoof Tue 13-Sept-16 13:07:01

Like Jane10 I will not bother to watch the new Best Greedy Bakeoff on Channel 4 next year. If Mary B goes it will say a lot about her. I hope she doesn't so we don't lose faith in her. Money isn't everything.

Marymore Tue 13-Sept-16 12:54:54

Ivthink quite a lot of licence payers are watching GBBO www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/the-great-british-bake-off-2016-viewing-figures-bbc-flagship-show-watched-by-112-million-people-a7208891.html

Hate Strictly, GBBO, any cookery, antiques, Let's move to the country (ideally Oz), gardening, game shows, Essex, reality shows/talent competitions. As for Doctors/Corrie/Emmerdale, the storylines at present are diabolical. In short, don't know why I pay my TV licence - apart from Poldark I wouldn't bother to switch on my TV at present.

Apologies if somebody else has already said this, I've not had time to read all the posts.

Why all the fuss? The BBC don't actually make the programme themselves. Not sure about sport, but apart from news and other Public Service Broadcasting, most is actually made by outside production companies. Sometimes the BBC have ideas and commission programmes, but usually they are approached by outside companies who have had a good idea - I'm guessing that this was the case here as this enables the production companies to sell the series elsewhere. And the spin-off programmes where they talk about what has happened are very like the C4 offerings anyway.

(I would miss sensible Mary and Sparkly-Blue-Paul though if they left, and I like Sue).

So why is the BBC still such a large, expensive organisation? And why is senior management paid as much as the board members of large public companies?

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 11:52:48

They'll have to cut it down even more if they keep to the one hour slot. There'll only be about 45 minutes of actual programme.

Irma Tue 13-Sept-16 11:49:25

If they have same presenters I'll give it ago. Worst thing is all the breaks on channel 4. Another programme to record so I can fast forward the many breaks they seem to have.

gettingonabit Tue 13-Sept-16 11:49:13

Sorry for typo thereblush.

gettingonabit Tue 13-Sept-16 11:48:37

Personally, I think it's had its day and the Beeb know it. Losing Gbbo may actually turn out to be a shrewd move.

I don't think it'll work on a commercial channel. I think it's the type of programme that can only work on Bbc-it has a tweeness about it imho which I doubt would appeal in a commercial setting. Hope I'm wrong, because the formula has worked thus far.

Most of these formulaic programmes lose appeal after a while. Great when fresh but go off the boil, so to speak, after a while.

Masterchef, Gbbo, Interior Design Challenge, Strictly: all gone the same way.

Maybe on C4 Gbbo will become more "niche" and appeal to a new, fresh audience.

Rosina Tue 13-Sept-16 11:44:11

Well said, Rosieroe and Nankate; how unkind can you be for goodness sake?. Mary Berry is an elderly woman making the most of her time, skills - and appearance. She is to be admired and encouraged, not slapped down with spiteful comments. I assume that the unkind ones are all perfect icons, with thick shiny luxuriant hair, their own gleaming naturally white teeth etc. (Or perhaps not - sour grapes maybe??) I do find that attitude so depressing - I am still on the 'younger side of old', but that sort of talk makes me feel I should shoot myself or crawl away and die as I can't be seen in public unless young and perfect. 'Surprised to see it on Gransnet!

MiniMama Tue 13-Sept-16 11:37:45

I agree with Rosieroe, Mary Berry is delightful, I wish I had half her skills!

TriciaF Tue 13-Sept-16 11:29:33

You can always record it and fast forward the ads when you watch later.
I still enjoy the programme apart from the showstopper.
Lets hope Channel 4 doesn't bring sex into it (as they seem to do a lot.)

NonnaAnnie Tue 13-Sept-16 11:28:40

You never know it may be better on ITV?

The BBC are fast becoming too big for their boots, have a bad attitude and are always right. They need taking down a peg or to IMO. I can see them losing more and more of their programmes and they deserve it.

hulahoop Tue 13-Sept-16 11:16:09

Hope it doesn't go to using "celebs" there are too many of them already I don't watch any of them wouldn't like ant and Dec either they get enough exposure! Don't know how fitting ads in will work though

Lupatria Tue 13-Sept-16 11:14:53

never watched bake off and i never watched strictly until after bruce forsyth left. maybe channel 4 will make bake off a better thing to watch - might even be persuaded to watch it too.
don't mind mary berry or paul hollywood - although he's a bit on the pompous side.

scrapgran Tue 13-Sept-16 11:12:29

No more for me either - suits BBC but awful with adverts

tigger Tue 13-Sept-16 10:57:53

I didn't know that. But Mary is the only one who looks sort of happy.

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 10:51:22

And Mary seems quite happy!

Ana Tue 13-Sept-16 10:50:43

That's not a new photo, tigger, it's a publicity shot for the current series.

annodomini Tue 13-Sept-16 10:50:14

I've come to the conclusion that the challenges on GBBO have become ever more complicated over the years. PH's bread challenge was, I thought completely unrealistic and it was no wonder that the majority of the contestants didn't have time to prove their bread with the result that the dough was uncooked. I've been wondering 'what next?' Is Channel 4 buying into a worn out formula?
Let's hope the Sewing Bee survives.
