I'll probably be unpopular for saying this but having seen both episodes I felt embarrassed watching Miriam Margoyles behave in such an undignified way.

She was often rude and demanding and as for the farting......

There are and have been threads on here about growing old disgracefully and now threads about the obesity crisis - well, if I ever need something to bring me up short when thinking about another slice of cake or a chocolate biscuit I think I'll watch last night's episode again.

Miriam and Rosemary made me cringe, waddling around being waited on hand and foot by trim, polite, dignified and attractive Japanese women of the same age.

I noticed Jan Leeming wasn't included in this series. Is that because the producers thought she was too slim, attractive and obviously likes to take care of herself?

hmm

Oh Jalima! I'm shocked and horrified. Will have to move to another thread!

annsixty Mon 02-Jan-17 18:17:49

I'm very surprised that no-one has mentioned the Shreddies underwear which "got an airing" on GN last year.

Jalima Mon 02-Jan-17 19:47:57

It was very gentle and quiet Jane10 - but unfortunately overhead!!
The DGD thought it was hilarious

Jalima Mon 02-Jan-17 19:48:38

Shreddies underwear - what have I missed?

Jane10 Mon 02-Jan-17 21:36:31

Sorry for delay in response Jalima, being one of those dainty Grans I had fainted when reading of your 'incident' . As far as those Shreddies are concerned I think I remember from last years thread that they are some form of charcoal underwear with 'absorbent' qualities. Some people who shall remain nameless were recommended to wear 2 pairs at a time...

Love that Wayne and some of the others are still working. I wish we had the Japanese employment agency and the 6am al fresco exercises!

Jalima Tue 03-Jan-17 00:15:43

shock
I must look out for charcoal knickers!

It's the sprouts wot does it

One day I took my grandkids then about 10 and 12 to the local Norman castle /museum we went on a tour of the dungeons, a rather po faced lady was our guide We stopped to hear about a particular gruesome area we were standing in, right In the middle of a contemplative silence my grandson let rip, he kept a very straight face and would have got away with it, if my granddaughter hadn't burst into giggles, the look on po face needed to be seen to be believed

I was much impressed with the aging Japanese lifestyle and am trying to adopt it ! Tranquility, politeness ,steady conscientious work habits and regular early morning exercise is my way forward ! My New Year resolution !

Jane10 Tue 03-Jan-17 08:44:11

The 6 am exercises in the park looked like a very good idea. There wasn't a single overweight person in sight though. The Japanese diet must be very healthy.

Christinefrance Tue 03-Jan-17 09:00:27

The Japanese people we saw looked very healthy and slim. I liked the idea of exercising with others as well. I did have a little niggle that it was all very prescribed and slightly regimented.
I'm not sure Japan would be a retirement option though, totally different culture and the language must be difficult to master, it would be an adventurous person who did that.

My OH says that if Sandi Toksvig has never farted then she must have really bad breath. grin
I enjoyed both programmes, and although Miriam is loud and opinionated, I admire her for being as she wants to be, apparently doing no harm in the process.

Jane10 Tue 03-Jan-17 09:04:45

Ooh Marelli I hadn't thought of that!

Anniebach Tue 03-Jan-17 09:52:35

I would rather watch Miriam than the needy Jan Leeming , Miriam is comfortable in her own skin

Jalima Tue 03-Jan-17 10:25:09

I'm not saying that Miriam is not very funny and interesting - it's just that every other utterance seems to be a puerile reference to bodily functions!
Perhaps it was the way it was edited.

Anniebach Tue 03-Jan-17 11:17:56

The editing surely Jalima , two hours viewing

Jane10 Tue 03-Jan-17 11:24:06

Yes the editing must have had a lot to do with it.
These are very long flights for one thing. I noticed that MM had had a knee replacement which was never referred to and definitely not a picnic to live with. I suspect that she has to dress for comfort rather than style but she did look rather cute in her odd little dresses. Looked much better in the long tunics and trousers though.
I do hope they make more of these programmes. I thoroughly enjoyed them for a variety of reasons.

Elrel Tue 03-Jan-17 12:16:47

I'm not going to admit what happened as I stepped forward to drop a rose on a dear friend's coffin. She would have laughed. I may have looked askance at another old friend beside me ...

Jane10 Tue 03-Jan-17 12:25:39

Elrel! Not you too!shock

POGS Tue 03-Jan-17 12:32:44

Marelli

'My OH says that if Sandi Toksvig has never farted then she must have really bad breath'

That's funny grin

Marelli Tue 03-Jan-17 16:48:45

grin !!

Chrishappy Tue 03-Jan-17 19:02:42

I really enjoyed both programs. To see Miriam being so open about bodily functions was very refreshing. I have a deformed bowel and have no control whatsoever on farting. I've been in some awful embarrassing situations that have nearly stopped me from going out at all and all because people have looked at me as though I'm the muck under their shoe just because I've farted! I can't help it and I can't control it, so to see that she didn't give a toss has helped me put it in to perspective in the wider context and realise it's no big deal. She's my hero at present.

Elrel Wed 04-Jan-17 22:45:31

Chris?

Jane10 Thu 05-Jan-17 09:46:33

Chris and Elrel we should all get together and go on outings en masse. That would give people something to think about! Le Petomane had nothing on us!

Elrel Fri 06-Jan-17 01:26:21
