The advert for it was enough to put me off,that disgusting horrible thing,why would anyone find that entertaining,
The usual reason they're on those sort of programs is because they can't get acting roles,probably alienated themselves with their,I'm the most important person behaviour.

We changed channels. It was awful. We are watching The Marigold Hotel at the moment for the umpteenth time. We love going to India and can just imagine it all happening.

HildaW, no one has admonished Miriam M for her views on Trump - just the way she delivered them to people who were, in effect, her hosts.

I don't really want to see warts and all from people who are being treated respectfully by their hosts. I'm happy to be a social snob if it means I can dislike foibles I think are unpleasant and embarrassing.

I imagine they decided Jan Leeming was too much of a basket case (But that might just be me)

I met Miriam a couple of years ago and found her great fun. She did a reading from Alice in Wonderlsnd and her reading voice is beautiful.

I'm with HildaW! Refreshingly different from all the twentysomething 'celebs' trying something new. I'd love to meet Miriam M in person and Wayne Sleep seems a lovely chap.

I find talk of farts and farting rather embarrassing and wouldn't talk of such things myself. But I don't really see that as a reason to dislike Miriam Margoyles. She's sometimes loud and opinionated and can be very undiplomatic but despite that I quite liked her - and Rosemary Shrager. I liked the chaps too and found the programme interesting and entertaining.

Why be embarrassed by farting we all do it don't we?

Sandy Toksvig on QI said that she'd never farted on her life! Quite worrying.

I saw both of these progammes and feel that I must have been watching something else to the majority of you. I saw nothing disgusting about it. I really enjoyed them. Yes Miriaum may not be to everyone tastes, but she is open and honest. The farts thing wouldn't bother me. It's a natural body function. When you have dealt with a child with crohns disease and talked of what their poo looks like, farts are no problem
Both Rosemary and Miriam tried their best in Japan to understand the ways of the people there. They both knew that they were loud and it wasn't acceptable to the Japanese, so tried their best to tone it down.
I really liked the programme.

Sorry can't agree Cassie, I think MM overplayed the growing old disgracefully card to a great degree. I would have liked to see more of the Japanese ladies and their lives.
Not sure what this programme achieved certainly was not entertaining.

You may not have found it entertaining Christine but some people did - as is the way with most things.

I liked the programmes too. Miriam overreacted to that rude man but he overreacted to her. We all have our personalities some more 'acceptable' than others but on the whole I rather like this team. That doesn't mean I'd like to live with them in Japan but , maybe, in the first village in the US.
I fart in public occasionally but, thankfully, not very often. Tips on how to keep it in would be gratefully received ??

Step One: clench the buttocks
Step Two: try to cover up the fact that your face has gone blue
Step Three: if steps one and two fail, then frown meaningfully at someone else in the vicinity in the hope that people will think it was not you.

When DS was a little boy I told him I would give him a sweet if he apologised if I ever accidentally farted in public so people would think it was him. This was a good idea as he was a windy wee thing. However, one day as I leaned into a freezer in a supermarket, the worst happened and I let fly. Quick as a flash DS piped up 'Sorry Mummy farted'!

I liked this programme as well. I think the opposite to most people on here, I like the ladies especially MM, she is humerous, outspoken, and herself.

I also think they are showing the
differences between themselves and other cultures, which I found interesting. All in all I thought the four of them enjoyable to watch

As an aside- should I fart...which obviously I don't as I am a lady - Grampy immediately apologises .

I liked the programme but thought that maybe MM was playing a role - a parody of an elderly woman. Does she really dress like that I wonder.

I've watched most of the 'Marigold' series, including the film and I love MM and her outrageousness. But.... I do wish she'd pay more attention to her appearance, but I guess she doesn't give a toss and dresses for comfort. I've got short chubby legs like her and I wouldn't dream of clambering into a 4x4 type car in a short skirt ! DD sometimes picks me up in the family Defender, and she always brings DGs plastic loo step to assist my entrances and exits. So it's always trousers for me. Anyway, back to Japan..... in a scene near the end ( think it was a visit to a holy site) MM was wearing a bright orange tunic and trouser suit. It really flattered her. As It was somewhere requiring a bit of decorum perhaps the production team persuaded her into wearing it ! Whatever, its a style she ought to adopt. Though I doubt she will

Loved every minute of it. Very entertaining.

MM can scrub up well - she was included in the tribute on ITV to Ken Dodd for being a life long friend....and she'd done the whole hairdo and make-up job.....hells teef if one is travelling long haul and coping with completely different foods, cultures etc all I can promise is to be clean and perhaps a dash of lip gloss!

I liked MM in that long tunic top didn't she wear a green one at some stage too She really really shouldn't wear short dresses but then as you say she obviously doesn't give a toss what people think

I wish I'd seen these two followup programmes, but I didn't so my comments are probably way off the point.
From a practical point of view, the idea of spending your last years in any of these places might sound idyllic, but can it really be done?
It's hard enough in France. Language, bureaucracy, finance, racialism etc.

The thing is that none of them was seriously contemplating retirement in any of the countries they visited over the series - most of them have long-term partners and a settled life in the UK.

I think the idea was just to give us a glimpse of what retirement can be like in other cultures - I wouldn't like the Japanese one, far too structured and I'd never manage to get up every morning for the 6.30 exercise class!

I think Miriam Margolyes seems stuck in a time-warp which 6 year old boys enjoy - farting, toilets and bodily functions. Grow up!
As for Rosemary, about five minutes in her company would be enough for me.

Wayne is delightful.

Perhaps Jan could not bear another moment in the company of the two other ladies.
