Perhaps I have missed it, but I was surprised nobody else has commented on last Sunday's strong (FGM) storyline.
Having welcomed Jennifer Kirby as the new nurse the previous Sunday, I wondered if she was going to have an "interesting" role - and she certainly did!
However, while retired NHS nurses and doctors who were working in the Sixties can put me right as they undoubtedly encountered FGM in areas with a high immigrant population, I have to admit I had not even heard of it until the "Noughties"
A sad story although with a happier twist, but no wonder so many women died in childbirth even in the 20th century.

My mother used to be an agent for Playtex, like the woman in CTM. I have a vivid memory of her going away on a course for a few days and coming back with a present for me, which was a tiny plastic sewing machine with a wheel that turned.

She did not stick to the Playtex job for long.

Sister Monica Joan was in last night's episode or am I dreaming? Wasn't she on the steps at the end when it was snowing?
I could be wrong (again)

Was that a 'Playtex Living Girdle'? I think my mum had one.
Just the thing to keep you cool when you're having hot flushes!

Lona Mon 13-Mar-17 10:10:30

Didn't she ask to go back to the 'mother house' Ana, or am I mistaken as usual? grin

Ana Mon 13-Mar-17 10:04:53

That corset! shock grin

But where was Sister Monica Joan...?

PRINTMISS Mon 13-Mar-17 08:26:33

Just a lovely bit of whimsy for a Sunday evenings' viewing, a lot of good historical information as well, it will be missed I think as something to relax with on a Sunday, wonder what we shall have to replace it.

Pittcity Mon 13-Mar-17 08:25:25

I had a giggle at the huge diaphragm grin

Auntieflo Mon 13-Mar-17 08:22:22

It was a weepy evening, what with CTM sadness over Wilma, and then turned over for the Good Karma Hosp, and more tears with the Phyllis Logan storyline.

I just love CTM . It harks back to a time when people expected so much less than we do now . However most Nuns I knew were not kind and gentle like the ones in Poplar!

Loved it, OTT as the carousel was it sort of fitted. Would have loved one of those at our wedding smile. Sorry it has ended.

Tears right from the start with the last showing of Call The Midwives. It was brilliant, heartwarming, funny, and sad all at the same time. Cant wait for the next series.

Very syrupy but so glad Mrs Turner's baby was born safe and well. They did manage to cram in how the pill affected or even killed some people. Bring on Line of Duty!

Christinefrance Mon 13-Mar-17 01:34:50

Yes definitely OTT with the carousel, a step too far but an enjoyable series. Everything seems to be finishing at once, looking forward to Line of Duty.

Was it right for a vicar to profit from gambling, shouldn't he have given it to the poor......

Loved it !

He could have whisked her away on a honeymoon with his winnings! Or bought a car - and whisked her away!

Anniebach Sun 12-Mar-17 22:53:23

I thought the carousel was a step too far

Jalima Sun 12-Mar-17 22:46:06

I didn't realise it was winter and wondered why Barbara wore a cloak with a fur-trimmed hood as part of her wedding outfit - then I saw the snow!

jacksmum Sun 12-Mar-17 22:32:56

I and my family will miss this program on sunday evenings , my daughter had not really realized life was like this when i was younger , i think it is a really good series , looking forward to the new one.

Morgana Sun 12-Mar-17 22:29:16

Cried in every episode! What a great series and lots of difficult topics covered.

merlotgran Sun 12-Mar-17 22:28:52

They couldn't throw any more at it tonight could they? Somebody must have shouted, 'Let's have SNOW!' grin

Luckygirl Sun 12-Mar-17 22:20:57

....was the carousel a bit OTT....?

But a good episode indeed.

callgirl1 Sun 12-Mar-17 22:12:16

Well, it was a real tear jerker tonight. And we have to wait till next year now, apart from the Christmas special, which is still a long time to wait.

Anya Sat 11-Mar-17 09:19:42

Yes, love how Linda Bassett (Nurse Crane) has taken that part and worked her character up.

merlotgran Sat 11-Mar-17 09:13:56

No doubt the series will end with the birth of the Turner's baby. I hope it's not a big life threatening drama like Chummy's baby.

HannahLoisLuke Sat 11-Mar-17 09:05:10

What a cracking series this has been, ending all too soon tomorrow.
It covers the misery and heartbreak of poor areas in the 50s and 60s and yet always feels warm and comforting Sunday evening viewing.
I love all the characters but my favourites are Nurse Crane and Doctor Turner and his wife Sheila. Very fond of Fred too.
