I recently found, and indeed bought, a DVD of this film in my local HMV store. I remember seeing it as a child, and I have never forgotten it as it made such an impact on me even then.
It is about a deaf and dumb little girl played by Mandy Miller, a wonderful little actress I think.
I cried buckets today as I watched it.
Does anyone else remember this film?

Yes, I remember the film and wasn't Mandy Miller occasionally a guest panellists on Juke Box Jury with David Jacobs in the sixties?

merlotgran Mon 06-Nov-17 18:34:31

Oh, and she also sang Nellie the Elephant!

Nellie the Elephant - Saturday morning and Uncle Mac. The Runaway Train, The Laughing Policeman .......

Is that the film where she touches her lips on a balloon and feels the vibration.?

If so yes a brilliant film.

Oh yes I remember it well. Such a wonderful little actress. Often think of it now as my little DGS has no hearing in one ear.

It was a very moving film and then realise how long ago it all was!

I remember my grandmother thought Mandy Miller really was deaf and dumb.

I remember seeing it. One of the first films I saw.

In the 1960s my Mum ran a Bed and Breakfast business from our home in Stratford-upon-Avon. We had many actors and musicians staying with us, such as Mandy Miller, Sian Phillips (Peter on Toole's wife) and many of the ballet dancers who performed at the Royal Shakespeare theatre during the winter months. One of the nicest actresses was Dandy Nicols who became famous as the wife in Till Death us do part. She had a very cultured voice ! I was quite star struck with it all.

I seem to remember Mandy Miller eventually retired from acting, got married to a farmer and moved to Scotland.

And yes it was a great film.

Just looked up Mandy Miller and I got it totally wrong about her marriage etc, it must be some other actress I am talking about. hmm

I remember it well, my auntie took me to see it, and I couldn `t understand why people were staring at me, then my auntie pointed out that I looked remarkably like Mandy Miller. I also saw another of her films, Child in the House.

I don't remember seeing the film but I do remember Mandy Miller. I had a book about ballet in which she posed for quite a few of the photographs. I thought she was the bees knees and I soooo wanted to be her

Loved that film. It made quite an impression on me. I remember her putting her lips to the balloon when she was being taught to speak. Feeling quite nostalgic.

I remember the film very well too. Beautifully acted and it obviously left a lasting impression on many of us.

Bellananna

Thanks, I thought I had the right film.

Lovely moment wasn't it!

It was shown again one afternoon on STV2, a couple of weeks ago. What a good little actress she was and such a good film.

I don’t remember either the film or the name Mandy Miller,
Which is strange since I saw a lot of films ( as did most people who lived in towns and cities) when young.
Have decided you must all be a lot older than me.?

midgey Tue 07-Nov-17 09:37:24

Well Lemongrove......it was certainly in black and white!

lemongrove Tue 07-Nov-17 09:40:31

Ah, well, am far too young to remember that far back( lies through teeth.) grin
