I recently found, and indeed bought, a DVD of this film in my local HMV store. I remember seeing it as a child, and I have never forgotten it as it made such an impact on me even then.
It is about a deaf and dumb little girl played by Mandy Miller, a wonderful little actress I think.
I cried buckets today as I watched it.
Does anyone else remember this film?

Gosh! Possibly the first film I was taken to see... And it made a huge impression on me too. And the lovely Jack Hawkins as the headmaster. She was such a pretty child.

I remember that film. Was Jack Hawkins not in it too?

Seeing so many replies has really made my day as I truly wondered if I was on my own in remembering this film because when I have mentioned it to a few friends of my age group, I got a blank look!!
Think that I will have to lend this DVD out to them, but they will have to pay for their own tissues ??.

Apparently she married an architect and had 3 children. She's also the aunt of actress Amanda Pays according to Wikipedia.

I remember it too. When it was on tv about a year ago I only knew it was on when it was near the end. Some films/ dramas get loads of previews while others are given no mention! Still enjoyed her acting for the bit I was able to see.

Yes I loved it too because I'm deaf so I related to it.
Also the story of Esther Costello, can anyone remember that one?

Hi mrsmopp.
I have never heard of this film, but I have just seen the trailer on You Tube. It looks amazing! Hope to find it on a DVD.

I remember seeing it on TV when I was young, but I have clearer memories of the film about the real life story of Helen keeler who lost her sight and hearing when she was a baby. I seem to think both films came out at about the same time but can be wrong.

I remember it because my Godmother was an advisor on the film , she was a schools inspector and had a lot to do with schools for the deaf , mainly in Glasgow

I remember this film very well and it made a great impression on me.
Indeed, when my very much wanted (and four years to manage to become pregnant) first baby arrived - I was totally paranoid about everything to do with him. One night, after feeding him, bathing him and putting him to sleep - I was disturbed that he did not seem to respond when hubbie came into the room. Remembering that film, we slammed the door shut, then banged a tray down in the room. Little Iain slept blissfully through it all. I was distraught and had him tested for deafness. of course, there was nothing wrong with his hearing, just sleeping 'like a baby'.
I can also remember the film about Helen Keller.

I`m resurrecting this in order to put on a photo of myself, being the same age as Mandy Miller, and I was often mistaken for her. The head and shoulders one is me, the other one is Mandy Miller.

Remember this film very well. Particularly where she runs into the road and a lorry just misses her and the driver gets out of his cab and starts to shout at her. The film goes silent and you see this angry man from the point of view of a totally deaf child.
When my first child was born, I got very worried about his hearing. Poor little baby, I bathed him, fed him put him down to sleep and then got worried when he did not stir when we called to him through the bars of the cot. That film was very strong in my mind - fortunately, there was nothing wrong with him - just first mumitus with me.

Wish I could remember the actress who played her teacher. Seemed to think she was a well known actress and impressive in the film.
