What else could we expect when you realise the talent we have lost over the past years .Liz Smith in the Vicar of Dibley together with Caroline Aherne in the Royle Family and the irreplaceable Victoria Wood to name but a few.

No Teetime - you are not alone in finding 'Call the Midwife' dire. I can't abide seeing actresses in the throes of childbirth at the best of times, but surrounded by all those prissy midwives and the likes of Jenny Agutter and Judy Parfitt trying to look saintly in their nun garb.... ugh! Also agree with you about 'Harry Potter' - I always recommend Philip Pullman to aficianados of J K Rowling - just to see what a good and original writer he is...falls on deaf ears though.

Another one looking forward to The Miniaturist [difficult one to spell/say, that]. Years ago they used to show a film called 'The Last Winter' terribly sad but quite beautiful, a typical American/Canadian rite of passage film. Agree about the Vietnam War series, kircubbin; I've always been a fan of the Ric /Ken Burns documentaries. Want to introduce DD to Upstart Crow [never has time to watch tv]. Wish there was a Motherland Christmas special [maybe next year?]. And I'm missing last years 'Dickensian', although perhaps, because it was so brilliant, it would have been difficult to do another series as good. Taking my copy of The Highway Rat to DGD's on Friday; she wasn't keen on the book when I read it to her but perhaps, now it's on tv she'll like it. May get the boys to watch the Wizard of Oz dvd as we're going to see Oddsox perform it in February. Somehow got to fit in a visit to the cinema to see the Man who Invented Christmas#it'sallgo

It's a two part dramatisaton of a book by Jessie Burton, Overthehills. A reading group favourite, which all my group at least really enjoyed.

I'm a Motherland fan too, Tegan. I had to watch one episode twice, it was so funny, if a bit close to home - the one where the in-laws came to "help".

Call the Midwife, EastEnders, Strictly. Haven`t checked all the films out yet.

New Year's Day Concert from Vienna. Have watched it every year probably for 50 years!!!!!

Greengage Watched New Year's Day concert for the first time on new years day. I've had it in my mind not to miss the next one all year! Just wonderful.

The replies show how different all our viewing tastes are.
Seems to me there are things for everyone to enjoy either as they or aired or recorded.

Maggie; I see things in Motherland second time round that I missed the first time...eg she had a list of people next to her desk that had been considered for one of her corporate events, and David Cameron was top of the list with his name crossed out; ditto Anika Rice. I need to see the whole list...We had some friends round for a meal the other week and just sat round the table mentioning various things from the series; we were in tears from laughing but the S.O. has never watched it and couldn't understand what was going on. I must sit DD down and make her watch it because she phones me up to tell me things that are stressing her out and I think that, if she watched Motherland she would see the funny side of some of it!

pollyperkins, The Christmas Carol Goes Wrong is on Saturday 30th at 7.10pm on BBC1. Hope we all enjoy it after the build up I have given it!

There are some super sounding dramas on over Christmas which I hope I will be able to watch. I saw snippets of the Royal Variety Show last night and was appalled by it - it somehow seemed old fashioned and amateurish. I felt so sorry for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge having to site through it and then mingle afterwards. The only good part is that I believe the monies go to charity! Entertainment over the Christmas period looks far better.

The Crown, Matt Smith and Claire Foy are brilliant. Call the Midwife, GBBO, and Strictly Christmas specials and maybe Little Women. Christmas starts properly for me with Carols from Kings

Have just watched Cunk on Christmas and found it rather funny, although it might offend some people. A repeat from last year [didn't see it then].

Junior Choice on Radio 2 on Christmas morning. Anneka Rice taking over from Stewpot (RIP)

I just heard about Junior Choice yesterday. DD2 is recording it for DGS2, after grandad and I gave him a performance of some of its classics, much to his horror delight.

We have Sky movies, BBC, ITV - Don't know why I pay for TV rental, licence - about 70 channels and nothing on any of them! Hate TV and left to my own devices would chuck it out of the window (OK - I do play video games so need a decent screen!) but my menfolk, even if they say it's c**p, still watch, while I'm Radio person.

There has been very little on that interests me, apart from the programme where actors/presenters competed with each other to sing songs from musicals. I found that quite entertaining. Also, Call the Midwife and the Marigold/Cuba programme.

I watched a lovely little film the other night - Love is Strange. Understated, natural dialogue, beautiful soundtrack and ultimately surprisingly touching.

What on earth is happening to Coronation Street - it is getting more and more bizarre by the minute?

I'm looking forward to Spiral returning.

TV was so boring yesterday I played scrabble and did killer suduko most if the day and evening.

Not really a television person, but I did watch Chas n Dave (for the umpteenth time yesterday) not really interested in any other programme.

Had nothing to look at yesterday, really, really dire can’t stand the midwife or eastenders and hate Harry Potter I looked forward to mrs brown but that has had its day churned out all the usually stuff very predictable
