I had my first very own transistor radio when Iwas about 16. Vividly remember taking it into the bathroom with me so I could listen to Jack De Manio whilst getting ready. After that it was Radio 1 all the way.

I love the radio (well actually listen on Alexa and on the car radio)
Listen now to radio 2 and 4

Radio one was on constantly in my bedroom.
Tony Blackburn, Noel Edmonds DLT, Simon Mayo,
Annie Nightingale etc
In summer outside I would listen to a small transistor radio with ear piece

In the kitchen downstairs Mum would have radio 4 or radio 2 on.
She loved the Archers, Desert island disc, Woman's hour and the bedtime story. (I now listen to them!)
My grandparents had a radiogram.

We never had a radio in the sitting room as my father was sadly profoundly deaf and was very saddened that he was unable to listen to the radio and in particularly music.

I remember listening to Radio Luxembourg on my little transistor radio this was the only way to listen to pop music pre Radio 1.

mrsmopp Sun 25-Mar-18 19:40:56

Radio Luxemburg and Radio Caroline were both fantastic .
BBC Home Service and BBC Light Programme.

Situpstraight Sun 25-Mar-18 19:46:15

Maggymay, me too, under the bedcovers so that my parents wouldn’t hear and then the struggle to pick up Radio Caroline.

I listen Radio 4 Extra a lot and a few weeks ago caught an episode of The Men From the Ministry. It was so funny and the jokes about the political machinations at the UP is as relevant today as it was then. Rather like a 1950s Yes Minister. -they dont make 'em like that anymore

'Listen with Mother' in the afternoons, whilst my mum did the ironing. Sometimes I was allowed a small piece of apple too! smile

I had to listen to radio Luxembourg on my transistor under the bedcovers, my mother would call - are you listening to that Luxembourg music?, I switched off quickly so I could reply with honesty - no Mum, well I wasn't , I had switched it of ?

Grannybags Sun 25-Mar-18 20:59:58

Radio Caroline for me in my teens. I also remember having to stand on the kitchen table to get a signal for Radio Luxembourg! Mostly Radio 4 now.

Anniebach When the music for Dick Barton came on my sister would shout "Speshie Ater!" Meaning Special Agent!

I loved my tranny ( it meant something different then!) and took it everywhere, on picnics and outings ( couldn’t miss the Top 20) I remember being on Ilkley Moor ( bah’t ‘at) when Dylan’s Like A Rolling Stone was number 1 in the charts, and being told to ‘turn that racket down’ by a couple of old squares (grin) sitting near us.

MissAdventure Sun 25-Mar-18 21:17:22

Far out, lemon sounds like a total gas, man!

lemongrove Sun 25-Mar-18 21:19:48

For us it was MissA ...not so much for others.grin

midgey Sun 25-Mar-18 21:22:07

Anyone remember Stuart Henry?

lemongrove Sun 25-Mar-18 21:23:28

The radio ( or wireless as the adults called it) at home was huge, brown and cream and with loads of twiddly knobs which when turned made all those fascinating weird noises until you found a channel. We even picked up police radio messages ( mostly boring, no bank heists) on it.

MissAdventure Sun 25-Mar-18 21:24:50

We had a small tranny, in a leather case, with a handle so you could put it over your shoulder like a bag.

MissAdventure Sun 25-Mar-18 21:26:04

Oh I can almost still smell the leather.. smile

Chewbacca Sun 25-Mar-18 21:49:16

Radio Luxembourg under the bed covers, late at night, with the signal fading in and out and frantically trying to retune so that you could hear the song.
Sunday night with the Top 20 with Alan Freeman and his "pop pickers"!grin

mcem Sun 25-Mar-18 21:59:58

Hope everyone is aware that lots of these old radio shows are still available on radio 4E.
