It seems to me many of us like personal recommendations for TV series etc such as the recent Keeping Faith. So I am starting here a thread for us to post things we have enjoyed so that other GN members can sample them too.

I am really enjoying on ITV the Durrells at present, light hearted, warm sunshine and an easy watch.

Please add what station or app it is on eg Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC 1. Thanks.

Over to you.

True story of a young gp and his family settling in a rural french village.

Designated Survivor with Kiefer Sutherland on Netflix

The rain keeps driving us indoors during the day so I was happy to settle down with a cuppa and watch the new Escape to the Chateau yesterday with Dick and Angel Strawbridge.

This time they're 'helping/advising' other Brits who fancy some castle type DIY hmm

A bit more interesting than your average DIY programme.

Thanks for these suggestions. When I come back from a few days holiday in the beautiful Purbecks next week, I will sign up for Netflix. I am quite excited to get it as so many of you recommend series from there.

I've mentioned these programmes on other threads but I'll say it again. They are all brilliant entertainment.
'Grace + Frankie' on Netflix. Jane Fonda,Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen.
'Queer Eye' on Netflix. A group of 5 young men who will remind you their are lovely people in the world.
'This Country' on BBC iPlayer. Mockumentary about the Cotswolds done supremely well + v funny.
Hope you enjoy!!

Ooh thanks for that Merlotgran. I have recorded Escape to the Chateau, but thought it might just contain outtakes from the other programme. I shall enjoy watching.

I started watching The Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix last night. It's a comedy with Drew Barrymore as a suburban housewife/real estate dealer who turns into zombie ? overnight. I've only watched the first episode, so I'll reserve judgement, but it started promisingly.
I like some pure escapism. DH watches all the factual stuff.

Parsleywin Tue 10-Apr-18 16:08:26

NanKate, this thread is a great idea. Thanks!

hildajenniJ Tue 10-Apr-18 21:04:10

I'm also revisiting Death in Paradise, season 1 with Ben Miller as I've forgotten what they were about.
The Tick on Amazon Prime is fun too!!

Jane10 Tue 10-Apr-18 21:16:39

I don't have netflix but usually find something enjoyable. One film I'm keen to see when it finally hits TV is that one with Meryl Streep as the awful singer - senior moment, can't remember her name.
I agree about the Durrells. I wasn't keen to begin with but really look forward to it now.

Jane - Florence Foster Jenkins; thoroughly enjoyed it., and thought-provoking

Jane10 Tue 10-Apr-18 21:50:58

Thanks! I saw it on a plane journey and loved it. Want to see it again.

Welshwife Tue 10-Apr-18 22:25:18

If you did not see it the film ‘Changeling ‘ is excellent. Angelina Jolie - who I must admit I was never keen on - was very good. A true story about young lads who went missing in a particular part of - I think- Los Angeles - a local policemen eventually, after many years, managed to find out what happened to them.

I think this thread was a great idea too.

annodomini Tue 10-Apr-18 22:29:33

I enjoyed Hidden Figures, the true story of a group of African American women mathematicians who were involved in the calculations needed to make a success of sending a man into space. They had some formidable male (and female) opposition to overcome.
I also recommend Wonder, an adaptation of a book about a boy born with facial disfigurement who had to face bullying and prejudice when he started attending school. My teenage GC gave me the book to read at Christmas and then took me to the film.

This Country, the funniest thing on tv this year, funny and also touching at times.Spoof docu about rural living, set in the Cotswolds ( I enjoy identifying places there) the two main actors are brother and sister in real life.BBC1 ( iplayer)

hildajenniJ Tue 10-Apr-18 23:06:12

I enjoyed the film Julie and Julia, about the American cookery writer/chef Julia Child. Meryl Streep played the title role.
On another thread I mentioned The Cobbler, about a cobbler who tries on a pair of shoes...,and a comedy The Do Over is a hoot.

Bluebell123 Wed 11-Apr-18 05:18:54

I enjoyed "The Shape of Water" at the cinema recently. Sally Hawkins is my favourite actress.

NanKate Wed 11-Apr-18 07:58:35

Started to watch the first in the series about how our men and women trained in WW2 to become secret agents. They had a number of modern day people copy the tough training both physical and mental. Excellent viewing.

It was on BBC1 on Monday night I think.

Humbertbear Wed 11-Apr-18 09:07:52

We are enjoying The Looming Tower on Amazon. It is the story of the feud between the FBI and CIA which led to them missing all the signs that9/11 was about to happen. Stars the wonderful Jeff Daniels

travelsafar Wed 11-Apr-18 18:12:24

I have just watched on Netflix something called Shaka the Zulu.

Really old by the look of it but the scenery and costumes are amazing. It has some well know faces in it but the acting quite hammy smile

It tells the life of a Zulu king from conception to death.

Someone recommended Making of a Murderer on Netflix and I've binge watched - fascinating. BBCiplayer Unsolved is very interesting, the episodes called something to do with an alibi (there is another one about a missing girl on the IOW that I couldn't get into that one) and again binge watched as just had to find out what happened. Really enjoyed Marcella series 2 - hadn't watched the first series but it didn't matter, you don't need to. Think that's on itv.

Parsleywin Sun 15-Apr-18 13:38:19

Nankate, many thanks for your advice re iPlayer on another thread. I've signed in on the iPad and am now happily rooting around for goodies to watch. Much appreciated!

lemongrove Sun 15-Apr-18 21:31:28

Sky Arts, Urban Myths, great comedy/drama, there is a whole set of them to download, very good acting.British btw.

NanKate Sun 15-Apr-18 22:24:59

Glad you are sorted Parsleywin I am sure you will find lots of interesting viewing now you are into the swing of it.

Now here is my dilemma just signed up to Netflix and shared with my DS and two GSs as I can have it on 6 devices. My DS got it set up and running on his TV in minutes and I want to put it on our Panasonic TV now, it’s
up and running on my IPad. But it is not that simple. I
suppose I will have to wait until DS passes through and get him to do it for me.

I saw in the paper they recommended a series on Netflix
starting this week called ??? Set in Victorian times. I will
come back to you on the one word name. It certainly looked good.

I love customising my viewing to my own preferences. Gone are the days of everyone watching the same thing at the same time.
