Does anybody still watch this?
Does anybody care or has it all become too unutterably naff?
In the 70’s when far fewer nations took part, we used to have or go to dinner parties where you drew a country in a sweep and actually watched the shenanigans (with suitable toasts for one’s “own” country)

Apparently, some people love it so much, they hold Eurovision parties. One such person was on our PTA and suggested it as a fund raiser one year. The rest of us looked at him in utter disbelief. All his friends dress up, bring food for the evening and watch at his house, singing along using the subtitles. Needless to say, the PTA did not run it as an event.

Strangely enough, whenever I think of Eurovision the name that comes to me first is Vicky Leandros, she won for Luxembourg in 1972. I couldn`t remember the song, so looked on YouTube, since then I can`t get it out of my head, love it.

Jalima1108 Mon 14-May-18 19:38:42

All I can remember is Buck's Fizz and Abba

Oh - and Sandie Shaw, Puppet on a String

gillybob Mon 14-May-18 15:10:46

We did Jalima grin

Jalima1108 Mon 14-May-18 14:27:32

I think iswym gillybob - the better the song, the fewer the points - in which case we nearly won!

gillybob Mon 14-May-18 12:16:47

Maybe its really a reverse contest and to win you have to lose . In which case we really did rather well. confused

Lindylo Mon 14-May-18 10:53:30

Only caught ten minutes or so of the show on Saturday.
Really feel it's about time we pulled out. We are never going to get even into the top half of the entries as we are hated in Europe. Surely the money could be spent more wisely elsewhere.
It's just got too political with a 'we vote for you/you vote for us' pact going on.

NfkDumpling Mon 14-May-18 07:22:56

We had it on, because DH was reading the paper and I was concentrating on a new knitting pattern. I got the feeling Graham Norton was pulling his punches and could have been far more entertaining if he'd been allowed. Most of the songs were 'wallpaper' (which is why it got left on) and the winning one I didn't like at all. I do think we don't stand a chance of getting anywhere regardless of the quality of our entry. I don't think we should have automatic entry, it doesn't help our popularity. As for the Eurovision presenter women, they were scary!

POGS Mon 14-May-18 07:07:09

I watched it and I thought it was , wait for it -very good.

It must be me as I thought there were some really good songs from the UK, Germany, Sweden , Australia, Cyprus to name just a few.

The UK song was a good one and I was surprised it did not fair better but I think we could put Adele or Ed Shearan on for the UK and we would be in the bottom 10.

The political voting is annoying but to be fair the next contest will be held presumably in Jerusalem??

Jalima1108 Sun 13-May-18 20:02:12

We watched it last night although we hadn't watched it for years - thinking we might have a laugh.
Oh dear, never mind.
and I did vote for Australia!
We know younger friends who have a party and dress up - everyone knows it is naff but apparently that is what makes it fun.

I just didn't 'get' the winning song at all, especially when the winner said "I'm so happy, thanks for choosing difference, thank you for celebrating diversity.".
Why did she say that, am I missing something?

ElaineI Sun 13-May-18 19:34:18

Missed first half as out pram walking to give DD2 rest from colicky baby. It is apparently more of a thing abroad than here! Kept baby asleep anyway. I thought the voting was less political this year but seemed pointless as the public vote changed everything so why bother with the panel votes at all! Had a laugh when the chicken song won! Says it all!
Usually watch Casualty on Saturday evenings.

Franbern Sun 13-May-18 18:47:36

Never been interested in this at all. However,, one of my teenage g.daughters had a couple of friends for a sleep-over so they could watch it all.
UK will never win as there is so much political voting. Perhaps of all the performers did so without having their nationalities known, might get better results.

BlueBelle Sun 13-May-18 13:50:22

.... our song which I heard on news and radio programmes sounded really really familiar but I can’t think what to any ideas

Maggiemaybe Sun 13-May-18 13:46:08

The audience give her a rousing ovation at the end of her performance. I thought she might get some sympathy votes from it, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. smile

I don't think ours was a bad song, either.

nanaK54 Sun 13-May-18 12:14:50

I haven't watched it for years, did however see a news report this morning which showed the protester jumping on stage and grabbing the mic from our contestant, I thought she was remarkably calm, good for her!

paddyann Sun 13-May-18 11:56:50

I watched it ,there was some good stuff on it this year ,I liked Denmark and Germany ,the Irish boys song was lovely and there were another few that I would buy.I do like new music though and always go out of my way to find new artists .Some really good voices last night...some rubbish too .

Greyduster Sun 13-May-18 11:47:56

I don’t watch it - haven’t since Bucks Fizz I don’t think! It’s a travesty now anyway and you know what the result will be year after year.

BlueBelle Sun 13-May-18 11:43:42

Haven’t watched for years and am not interested enough to even wonder I be
I believe we came towards the bottom as normal andwhy on earth are Israel and Australia in a European comp I ve never got my head round that one
I saw the winner on the news this morning and that look totally bizarre and very very daft
In answer to the original question yes I think people do still watch I know a number of younger folk who have. Eurovision parties I cannot imagine why it’s seems as naff as it can get

shysal Sun 13-May-18 11:32:32

I recorded the whole thing and started to look at a few moments of each song until I had seen about 10, most of which were rather dreary, then went to bed. I also liked the German song, it was a bit like Ed Sheeran's compositions and the singer even had a lovely head of red curls. I will find and listen to the winning entry sometime then delete the whole programme.

henetha Sun 13-May-18 10:19:47

Well, I enjoyed it. All of it. It's harmless. And I like Graham Norton's wry commentary.

Humbertbear Sun 13-May-18 10:03:28

We watched with a curry , wine and score sheets. Graham Norton’s commentary is very funny as are many of the costumes and routines. It was great fun.

DanniRae Sun 13-May-18 10:02:19

I think we still take part TerrBull because we are a country with world class acts - we have nothing to prove so it's just a bit of fun and also a tradition to be involved.

TerriBull Sun 13-May-18 09:38:27

I don't watch it and haven't for years. Why do we even bother entering, we have nothing to prove, we have umpteen world class acts, we conquered the world of musical entertainment decades ago with the Beatles and all those that followed thereafter. England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland all punch well above their weight as far singers, groups, composers, song writers established on the world stage. With the exception of the Swedish group ABBA, has the European Song Contents ever produced any worthwhile acts. Their win was of course years ago when The Eurovision Song Contest still had some credibility and the votes were cast for the best act without all these alliances that seem to be a feature of this ridiculous farce of late.

DanniRae Sun 13-May-18 08:58:03

I recorded it so I can leave out the boring bits between songs and thought the UK entry was enjoyable but scary when the man jumped up on stage - I agree she did really well to carry on. I love Graham Norton's commentary - Terry Wogan got on my nerves, to be honest. As FarNorth has said he was so smug (and pleased with himself). I found the voting really exciting but only finished watching it this morning! We didn't win but no surprise there - I doubt we'll win the Football World Cup either but, as always, we live in hope.

Gerispringer Sun 13-May-18 08:56:09

I think it’s hilarious, but then I have fond memories of ABBA and Bucks Fizz .....those were the days. I would have watched it but the GC insisted on Britain’s Got Talent - if you think Eurovision was dire you should have watched that.?
