DH and I are both big radio fans and at breakfast today we were musing on the ones we miss.
My favourites were;-
Men from the Ministry
The Glums
Beyond our Ken
30 minute theatre
Hancocks Half Hours

DH was a big Dick Barton fan and is still devoted to The Archers

Any you miss? I know you can get some on Radio 4 Extra but it doesn't seem the same.

Billy Cotton Band show, this program was always on Sundays when we had lunch as a child. The program for the overseas forces, i cant remember what it was called, we loved listening to the requests and the reasons why the song was requested.

My DD has discovered radio 4 extra and loves some of the old programmes, Hancocks Half Hour, and others you mention Teetime so I bought her a selection of many old programmes on a cd.In fact there are many hours listening time on it, and if you are interested, I will find the exact title of it.She particularly likes Round The Horne.grin

Radio 4 Extra is brilliant for bringing some of the old radio shows back lemon; I listen to it a lot. I love The Men From the Ministry and also the Paul Temple mysteries and Lord Peter Wimsey stories which I listen to during the night when I can't sleep.

Was the programme you remember "3 Way Family Favourites" travelsafar?

Uncle Mac and all those lovely songs like The Runaway Train.
The Clitheroe Kid
Archie Andrews smile

Round the Horne, Journey into Space, Goon Show, Take it From Here, and the Navy Lark. Gosh I am old!

Teetime Tue 03-Jul-18 09:43:00

Loved The Navy Lark!

Chewbacca Tue 03-Jul-18 10:02:51

On BBC Radio 4 iPlayer you can still catch the story of Peter Bough and Archie Andrews KatyK, it was on just last week. Quite a sad story actually.

Chewbacca Tue 03-Jul-18 10:08:38

Life with the Lyons was another. Kathleen Harrison, I think and Jack Warner. I remember that they had a daughter and also a young son who always got into scrapes that embarrassed his big sister. Can't remember their names?

KatyK Tue 03-Jul-18 10:16:18

Oh was it Chewbacca ? I'll try to find that. Another one that springs to mind, which my mum loved, was Mrs Dale's Diary.

I will miss Eddie Mair who has hosted PM for twenty years on Radio 4 and is moving to LBC. PM will continue but it won't be the same.

Great. Thank you. I will take a look.

mcem Tue 03-Jul-18 15:11:36

chewbacca I do exactly the same!
Can't see why 'it isn't the same teetime.
The fact that they're on iPlayer means you can listen to what you want when you want to.

KatyK Tue 03-Jul-18 16:12:54

That was rather good chewbacca Like you say, sad. I read that Archie was sold at auction in 2005 for £34,000.

Fennel Tue 03-Jul-18 16:17:04

Many of the above, especially the Goons.
Plus Children's Hour. Can't remember much about it apart from serialisation of Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield.
Not that I was the ballet type, but it was a good story.

KatyK Tue 03-Jul-18 16:22:51

Doh. I really must concentrate. As the end of the play said he was bought at auction. I wonder if it was true that Brough's daughter approached the couple who bought Archie? In fact, I wonder how much of it was true. Must get DH to listen to it.

Chewbacca, wasn`t Life With the Lyons Ben Lyons and Bebe Daniels and their family? I think you`re thinking of The Huggets when you mention Kathleen Harrison and Jack Warner. Didn`t a young Petula Clark play their daughter?
Did anyone listen to the Ovaltinies on a Sunday night? I loved the show, hated the product?
Also loved listening to Ted Lune reading the letters from his Mam.

I loved listening to the radio, all the shows mentioned. Wilfred Pickles, Housewives Choice, Forces Favourites, Sing Something Simple, Chapel in the Valley.
Can't believe we actually listened to a ventriloquist on the radio !!

mcem Sat 07-Jul-18 08:48:22

Not sure if I ll hear much of Eddie Mair now.
Aged 10, he was a very bright pupil of mine.

varian Mon 09-Jul-18 11:53:40

I'm sure you taught him well and gave him a lot of encouragement mcem

Lindylo Mon 09-Jul-18 13:11:58

Love the Navy Lark and Men from the Ministry. Radio 4 Extra is brilliant to listen to these programmes again.

I too remember the radio fondly, not least because it was a family activity, we often played cards and games in the evenings at the weekend, and toasted crumpets on the fire with a long handled fork. I remember Sat am Uncle Mac, and weekend lunchtimes Billy Cotton, all of the above mentioned. Did anyone mention Hancocks Half Hour? I loved the tune (typewriter keys) that introduced ‘write me a letter’ ( was that the name?) on early evening.

Who was it asked guests where they were ‘born and bred’ ?

We loved listening to ‘The Proms’ and remember that mum did not approve of Radio Luxembourg which us children wanted on when we got older!

JackyB Mon 09-Jul-18 14:21:41

We would listen to Round the Horne, Beyond our Ken, The Navy Lark, The Clitheroe Kid and Roy Hudd on Sunday lunchtimes.

My favourite programme to listen in my bedroom was "I'm Sorry I'll Read that Again". I would record it each week on a reel-to-reel tape, but I only had the one tape and had to re-use it, so I listened over and over again and can quote them still to this day!

Oh how we swooned over Tim Brooke-Taylor.

The rest of the time I listened to Radio London, as the radio reception out in the sticks in East Anglia where we lived was so awful, the Pirate Radio stations were just as good quality to listen to.

callgirl1 Tue 10-Jul-18 00:23:29

I used to listen to The Navy Lark, it was many years afterwards that I realised Lilian Gish was a real person!
