Radio shows we miss.

'Take it from Here' was favourite in our house many many moons ago!!

We certainly got our money’s worth from the radio licence in those days!

Round The Horn was always my favourite and still is - I still play the CDs and have a good giggle. I liked Life with the Lyons, The Huggetts, Al Read, Ray’s a Laugh, Family Favourites. Didn’t like The Clitheroe Kid or The Navy Lark though. I think I got my love of light music from listening to programmes like Friday Night is Music Night and The Vic Oliver programme, and learned a lot of geography from listening to Sandy MacPherson’s programme with requests from all over the empire! Top of the Form, Animal Vegetable and Mineral....... I am getting quite wistful now.

I used to listen to The Navy Lark, it was many years afterwards that I realised Lilian Gish was a real person!

We would listen to Round the Horne, Beyond our Ken, The Navy Lark, The Clitheroe Kid and Roy Hudd on Sunday lunchtimes.

My favourite programme to listen in my bedroom was "I'm Sorry I'll Read that Again". I would record it each week on a reel-to-reel tape, but I only had the one tape and had to re-use it, so I listened over and over again and can quote them still to this day!

Oh how we swooned over Tim Brooke-Taylor.

The rest of the time I listened to Radio London, as the radio reception out in the sticks in East Anglia where we lived was so awful, the Pirate Radio stations were just as good quality to listen to.

I too remember the radio fondly, not least because it was a family activity, we often played cards and games in the evenings at the weekend, and toasted crumpets on the fire with a long handled fork. I remember Sat am Uncle Mac, and weekend lunchtimes Billy Cotton, all of the above mentioned. Did anyone mention Hancocks Half Hour? I loved the tune (typewriter keys) that introduced ‘write me a letter’ ( was that the name?) on early evening.

Who was it asked guests where they were ‘born and bred’ ?

We loved listening to ‘The Proms’ and remember that mum did not approve of Radio Luxembourg which us children wanted on when we got older!

Love the Navy Lark and Men from the Ministry. Radio 4 Extra is brilliant to listen to these programmes again.

I loved listening to the radio, all the shows mentioned. Wilfred Pickles, Housewives Choice, Forces Favourites, Sing Something Simple, Chapel in the Valley.
Can't believe we actually listened to a ventriloquist on the radio !!

Chewbacca, wasn`t Life With the Lyons Ben Lyons and Bebe Daniels and their family? I think you`re thinking of The Huggets when you mention Kathleen Harrison and Jack Warner. Didn`t a young Petula Clark play their daughter?
Did anyone listen to the Ovaltinies on a Sunday night? I loved the show, hated the product?
Also loved listening to Ted Lune reading the letters from his Mam.

Doh. I really must concentrate. As the end of the play said he was bought at auction. I wonder if it was true that Brough's daughter approached the couple who bought Archie? In fact, I wonder how much of it was true. Must get DH to listen to it.

Plus Children's Hour. Can't remember much about it apart from serialisation of Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield.
Not that I was the ballet type, but it was a good story.

That was rather good chewbacca Like you say, sad. I read that Archie was sold at auction in 2005 for £34,000.

I will miss Eddie Mair who has hosted PM for twenty years on Radio 4 and is moving to LBC. PM will continue but it won't be the same.

Oh was it Chewbacca ? I'll try to find that. Another one that springs to mind, which my mum loved, was Mrs Dale's Diary.

Life with the Lyons was another. Kathleen Harrison, I think and Jack Warner. I remember that they had a daughter and also a young son who always got into scrapes that embarrassed his big sister. Can't remember their names?

On BBC Radio 4 iPlayer you can still catch the story of Peter Bough and Archie Andrews KatyK, it was on just last week. Quite a sad story actually.

Radio 4 Extra is brilliant for bringing some of the old radio shows back lemon; I listen to it a lot. I love The Men From the Ministry and also the Paul Temple mysteries and Lord Peter Wimsey stories which I listen to during the night when I can't sleep.
