Joanna Lumley's Silk Road ITV

I have enjoyed ALL of the travel programmes Joanna Lumley has covered from the Nile to Greece , Siberia to Japan and the current Silk Road series is equally charming.

I said this of Joanna Lumley on a past thread of a similar vein.

" She has a charm about her doesn't she. I think it's because she looks the person right in the eye when talking to them and knows how to make a person feel important, special. One could say she is brilliant at captivating her audience by flannelling them up."

She is undoubtedly a ' people person ' and have you noticed that she has had to withhold from making any form of 'personal contact' whilst in Iran , it must be so awkward for such an outgoing personality.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I'm a great admirer of Joanna Lumley, I think she's wonderful with all the people she meets and has a great sense of fun.

I love her outfits too and she has worn so many of them in this series. She is taking a one woman show on the road. She is coming to Birmingham Symphony Hall (quite a big venue) and it's sold out.

I also love the programme,have always liked Joanna Lumley, but I do think she is including a bit too much Ab Fab style to her presentation.
She is a very clever lady & does not need to hide it with whimsical behaviour.

I am loving this programme still. She's going to places I hardly knew existed.

M & S designers should do a range of clothes similar to the ones Joanna wears in this programme. I'm sure they'd be popular. No doubt hers are made of natural materials, silk etc, but they are so simple and wearable. I'd love to be able to buy something similar in a fairly budget range.

What fabulous clothes she wears. I want her perfect eyebrows. ? She is the same age as me but unsurprisingly she looks about 20 years younger.

I love to see all the exotic places she visits, fascinating.

Have you noticed she has trained herself to avoid shaking hands with anyone ?

I'm watching the Silk Road and thoroughly enjoying it. Who knew there was so much to marvel at, so much beauty and so much history in, say, Iran? I'm looking forward to JL in Samarkand next time, a magical place in my mind. Maybe that's due to having to learn James Elroy Flecker's Prologue to the Golden Journey to Samarkand at school.

I'd watch it too henetha.........I am sure they could find someone who would be capable of carrying it off. Imagine their delight at being chosen and how it would change their world. Yes, it's a really good idea and I think you should send it to the BBC!!

That could be a bit cruel through. I'd rather see the places with an experienced professional like Joanna than watching some poor soul, chosen solely because they are underprivileged, marvel (or not) at life's sights.
I suspect that making that programme is much more of a hard slog than the edited minutes we're shown.

I'd watch it, henetha. It'd be so refreshing to see the genuine reactions of someone who hasn't already seen so much of what's to see in the world. And someone who could perhaps be allowed to have the inevitable hassles the rest of us have when we travel!

Absolutely fabulous, this series! I adore Joanna and think she is just about perfect in every way. In fact, I would like to BE Joanna!
But, why do I feel faintly critical of celebrities being sent offf on these jaunts? To those that already have, much is given, it sometimes seems. How about taking some poor unemployed person, - a fairly articulate person of course, -
and sending them off to far flung wonderful places to film a travel series? My friend said, 'well no-one would watch it, would they. It's people like Joanna that attracts viewers.'
I take the point, but still feel faintly disquieted that it's mainly the rich and famous that get these perks.

I don't find her patronising at all. I love her sense of fun and her looks to camera are so humorous. Yes she is a bit over the top sometimes but that's all part of what makes her so entertaining.
She made Georgia sound so amazing I instantly wanted to go there and then on to the next country she visited - sorry I can't recall it's name. She's the perfect person to do a travel programme, in my opinion.
I didn't enjoy Ab Fab either - too silly.

I think she is the epitome of charm, a diminishing quality these days . Love her ‘ swishy trousers and tops’ style, going to two weddings next summer and will do my level best to steal her look!

Joanna didn't talk down to anybody. I thought she was delightful and charming to everyone she met particularly the carpet lady. I love her travel programmes,but didn't find A.F even faintly funny, just over the top and silly!!

Just watched this week's episode on catch-up. I loved it once again. Fascinating places and I did not find her patronising - she seemed genuinely interested in the carpet weaving for instance - but she is of course a very good actor!!

I wasn't going to watch as got a bit weary with celebrity travelogues.However on the strength of reviews on sat down to watch the first one and hooked.Such fascinating countries,and stunning scenery.Especially found the silk worms fascinating. And I don't find Joanna Lumley patronising in the least,rather I think she's warm ,polite and genuinely interested in people.

I just liked the minor characters in Ab Fab, the sensible daughter and straight-talking mother (June Whitfield?). They had all the best lines.

I don't find her patronising, I think she is rather lovely with everyone. I do find her a bit over the top sometimes though. I am enjoying the programme. I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't think AbFab was funny.

I love Romesh too! I never found AbFab in the least bit funny so I didn't watch it after the one episode I saw. Hence I really only associate her with her travel documentaries which I've always enjoyed.

I’m in the minority here. I love a good travel programme but find her so irritating I can’t watch. I always have a mental image of Dawn French standing behind her taking the mick. Give me someone like Romesh Ranganathan any day, with a good dollop of humour and cynicism.

As ever paddyann I must disagree with you. I didn't perceive her as talking down to anyone. She does her best to communicate with everyone she's shown meeting. Not easy when obviously having to rely on interpreters. She has to use absolutely straightforward language and emphasise her meaning by non verbal means such as smiling. Not easy at all!

I am really enjoying this programme and I thought the second episode was much more interesting than the first. Can't wait to watch the next one - I have it recorded.
I also love her clothes and wonder where she gets them? But, as has already been said, I expect they are very expensive!
