Just watched this on BBC1 at eight, anybody enjoy this as much as me. Easy viewing about how hotel staff ensure very wealthy guests have the best time. So want to have afternoon tea there?

lemongrove Thu 29-Nov-18 21:41:04

Me too! £65 a head for afternoon tea ( but I’m worth it!) grin

Mind boggling! I liked the general manager's gentle sense of humour.

A bit of me finds it quite offensive when people are starving or sleeping on the streets outside - but at the same time it is mesmerising. I am intrigued that all these programmes about posh hotels are run by people from abroad.

BlueBelle Thu 29-Nov-18 22:37:33

I couldn’t bear to watch it for the very reason luckygirl says
To me it’s offensive I caught the last few mins as I switched over to see what was on and heard a man say something about paying first class to have his gerbil fly somewhere or other I felt sick to the stomach

I expect the directors of Brightside stay here - or can afford to.

maryeliza54 Thu 29-Nov-18 22:49:38

I don’t watch this sort of porn btw

lemongrove Thu 29-Nov-18 23:43:46

maryE....... you will be canonised any day now I expect.
?

Like it or loathe it, it's a vital part of London's economy. Job opportunities, contracts for suppliers etc., etc.

For me it highlighted the obscene amount of money earned by celebs who wouldn't be in such an exalted position were it not for their maybe cash strapped fans. hmm

Do you think they employ people to take gerbils on first class flights?
I'm up for a job like that

I didn't see it but I read the write-up. Perhaps I'll take a look tomorrow.
And people get cross about the Royal Family ……
They're very frugal in comparison.

You have to be dead to be canonised.

As we found out when we were invited when our friend was made a canon and DH made the mistake of congratulating him on his canonisation grin

lemongrove Fri 30-Nov-18 08:08:50

grin
In that case canonisation will have to wait.

lemongrove Fri 30-Nov-18 08:10:26

I did think the gerbil quote may have been said tongue in cheek....but who knows?
The programme is fascinating * Jalima*

I enjoyed looking at that beautiful china teaset . It would look truly ridiculous in my house but perfect in those luxury surroundings .

Just highlighting the Rich/Poor divide even more . Obscene when you think about it.

Auntieflo Fri 30-Nov-18 08:20:59

Lemongrove and Jalima 1108 grin. grin. grin

People are entitled to spend their money as they wish provided its legal (and moral )
We have no idea how much money wealthy people donate to charity etc.
I do agree there is a great divide.

Nanabilly Fri 30-Nov-18 09:02:24

I thought the China was beautiful.
Did you see the absolute mess somebody had left that room in after a one night stay. Obviously a shopping trip.
I thought I had misheard when the man said about flying his gerbil first class.

Husband, D and I went with some friends for dinner at this hotel after the theatre a few Christmas’s ago.

The food was exquisite, service impeccable and not as expensive as you would have thought.

Hoping to go back for afternoon tea with D and sister in the new year.

As long as people have earned their money legally and pay the appropriate taxes in the country it is earned, they can spend it where and how they want. Will.I.am has set up a charitable foundation which helps a lot of underprivileged youth in his home town and is very much “hands on” with the foundation.

maryeliza54 Fri 30-Nov-18 09:24:18

Oh lemon dear you just can’t help yourself can you - bless. Never mind

Sparklefizz Fri 30-Nov-18 10:00:40

I found all that wealth and glitz so OTT ... all those pink balloons and everything pink for an 83 year old who has everything money could buy. I like nice stuff but this seemed obscene and I switched off and read a book instead.

However, I do accept that catering to wealthy people in this way brings in a huge amount of income to the country, and to London in particular.

Sparklefizz Fri 30-Nov-18 10:02:17

.... and I have a lot of time for Will.i.am, I must admit. As GrannyGravy says above, he does a great deal for kids from the ghetto back in his home town.

toscalily Fri 30-Nov-18 10:32:29

I did wonder if gerbil was a euphemism for girlfriend grin

Nannylovesshopping Fri 30-Nov-18 10:36:05

toscalily???

Anniebach Fri 30-Nov-18 10:38:32

I didn’t see the programme. No use holding anger because there are people with such wealth, always has been always will be so.

Sparklefizz Fri 30-Nov-18 10:40:56

Anniebach Not sure if you mean me, but I have no anger at all, just not interested.
