We watched the latest episode yesterday and I realised that I have lost track of the personal relationships - could someone please remind me. Thank you.

I love Shetland even though I often have no flipping idea what is going on.

My husband has decided that Alice will turn out to be the chief of the baddies and is just using Perez to draw attention away from what she is really up to!You heard it here first!

As I said, upthread, I started the thread, so he's mine.

Jimmy Perez can do no wrong!!!

I have been wondering about Tosh’s boyfriend for a couple of episodes. He seems to be a bit too much of an ancillary character and I can’t imagine that he is there just to provide some love interest for Tosh.

notanan [sigh]
I'm not thinking of tourists, oil rig workers etc etc

Jimmy Perez is (as I understand it) a Shetlander.
As is Sandy Wilson
Duncan too?

You'd think that they would know a bit more about Mr Big (Graeme Benson) who grew up on Shetland.

I went to Shetland on holiday last year - lovely , so much Nordic influence in the place names, style of houses , lots of Norwegian and Shetland flags around. We did see Jimmy Perez’ house which apparently is only used for the exterior shots, the inside is a studio in Glasgow! You can get a map from the tourist office showing the sites that have featured in the series. Because of the oil money, Shetland has very good infrastructure- roads, lots of public toilets, clean etc I’d love to visit again.

I always think of it as a small community where everyone knows everything about others who live or have lived there!

I think the premise is that Shetland has an indiginous community AND quite a transient community: oil workers, hotel/tourism workers, hippies/artists and tourists.

The interractions between the Shetlanders and the blow ins is a running theme in the books

It's rather like Death in Paradise when the local policeman didn't know that there was a library in their town.
I thought "Somehow, I don't think you picked the right occupation".

Sparklefizz Wed 13-Mar-19 20:23:53

Jalima I was thinking exactly the same last night when the blonde woman was asked where McGuire was, and she said she didn't know the actual address but she could describe it. In such a small place with a small population, it was bonkers. Plus surely Duncan would have known that his property had "squatters", etc etc. I expect he drove past it every week smile

Shetland is apparently 566 sq miles so I cannot understand why people who grew up there are completely unaware of others in their approximate peer group, even though they moved away years ago.
There are only two secondary schools and surely there must be general knowledge about those who moved away and became rich, especially if they visited Shetland frequently? Do they not have relatives living locally?
I always think of it as a small community where everyone knows everything about others who live or have lived there!

Or is it me?

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Mar-19 19:41:10

I'm still enjoying it though!

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Mar-19 19:40:50

I was suspicious of him Cold as he usually plays a baddie!

Well, I was confused too as I didn't think Duncan was on the same beach - and how handy to have a dog walker just strolling along at that time!

Cold Wed 13-Mar-19 19:30:01

Is anyone else suspicious of Alice's husband? He seems to be everywhere and even when happy he seems to exude a sort of false bonhomie. (However it could just be the acting)

Did anyone else wonder how Drunken Duncan managed to get from that small beach in front of Perez's house in the town centre to that remote beach where he woke up at the end of the episode? He hardly looked capable of staggering 10 metres!

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Mar-19 18:05:06

I do not like Alice one bit and hope she sails off into the blue yonder again with her husband.
Tosh and her boyfriend do not seem to gel either.

Will Perez realise that Tosh is his true love after all?

notanan2 Wed 13-Mar-19 16:28:21

I get that she wants a bit of excitement cause she is in a dull marraige but thats lust not love, and it hasnt really shown what he sees in her at all!

Its been more of a fling up to now and without even progressing to a full blown fling its suddenly all serious??

notanan2 Wed 13-Mar-19 16:25:19

Alice has been really shoe horned in to create the closure of Perez loving again. It hasnt really flowed, there was no build up, a kiss now they are going to spend the rest of their lives together???
Plus. The on screen chemistry isnt there..

notanan2 Wed 13-Mar-19 16:14:12

Some people are happier alone not everyone needs to be neatly paired off

notanan2 Wed 13-Mar-19 16:13:04

They are neatening it all up which is irritating, time consuming and unrealistic.

Wheeler dealers like Duncan dont get their come uppance

Adult children arent necessarily less needy

Rape victims do get on with their lives but dont necessarily "recover" with no issues etc

notanan2 Wed 13-Mar-19 16:10:57

I think its being drawn out because its one of the last if not the last one IYKWIM.

They are shoe-horning in lots of character loose ends (which is annoying): Tosh gets her man, Perez loves again, the tensions between Duncan & Perez come to the surface & Cassie is an adult who doesnt need her dads any more yada yada yada

TerriBull Wed 13-Mar-19 15:45:47

I always enjoy an Ann Cleeves book, but I find the dramatisations start off well but become too drawn out, can't help feeling this latest one could have been encapsulated into about four episodes.

notanan2 Wed 13-Mar-19 15:21:38

I also dont understand why Zezi was considered so "valuable" to the ring? Her family arent wealthy. Surely they would have sold her on long ago?

notanan2 Wed 13-Mar-19 15:18:00

Oh god sad there cant be any sort of resolution/happy ending to this series can they!

What was Perez thinking? Intercepting smugglers is not a job for the local bobby... "that ending" with duncan on the beach was inevitable if you go into intercepting organised cack handed like that...

[Sad]

Re the teen in Trapped: "Cool aunt" isnt helping matters.

NanKate Mon 04-Mar-19 17:44:41

I'm with you Greyduster but you would be thrown in some cold dank prison I suspect !

Greyduster Mon 04-Mar-19 17:41:32

I just caught up with Trapped on iplayer. I will keep watching, but can I just say how much I would like to slap his snippy teenage daughter?
