We watched the latest episode yesterday and I realised that I have lost track of the personal relationships - could someone please remind me. Thank you.

I love Shetland even though I often have no flipping idea what is going on.

Duncan is the birth father to Perez’s step-daughter Cassie.
Does that help, kitty?

LullyDully Fri 01-Mar-19 07:55:47

Yes, but who is the woman he was kissing?

kittylester Fri 01-Mar-19 08:07:14

Quite lully.

A bit marydoll but not hugely.grin I can never remember who is the real father - I actually thought it was the other way round!!!

Marydoll Fri 01-Mar-19 08:10:06

Unsure, I'll ask DH, he always pays attention.

Dougie Henshall comes from my wee town, should I ask him if I see him about? grin.
He has become all posh and now calls himself, Douglas!

I'm so glad I have found this thread. I was wondering whether or not I was losing the place. (Worst case my mind is going, best case I slept through or somehow missed a previous episode).
Looking forward to other more clued up grans bringing us up to date.

Perez has a step-daughter called Cassie. His wife was killed during part of a crime investigation.

Cassie is the child of the bloke (?Duncan) who is staying in Perez's house at the moment. He was previously married to Cassie's Mum (who then married Perez).

The woman he was kissing is called Alice - she is married to a local Shetlander - and sparks will soon fly when this all comes out!

I hope I have got all this right and not misled you!

FountainPen Fri 01-Mar-19 08:39:28

Duncan Hunter (Mark Bonnar) is Cassie’s biological father. Jimmy Perez married Duncan’s first wife Fran who then died. Duncan's second marriage is now failing.

The woman Perez kissed is Alice Brooks who has come to Shetland with her husband Chris to open a refuge. I don’t recall her in earlier series but from the dinner scene with Perez in episode 2 she clearly knew his late wife Fran so I’m assuming that Jimmy & Fran and Chris & Alice were friends on the mainland. Perez moved back to Shetland with Cassie after Fran died.

Thanks all, keep going, I am getting there.
I had to turn on the sub-titles for the last episode!

annodomini Fri 01-Mar-19 09:44:03

Different in the books. Jimmy and Fran lived in Shetland with Cassie who still retained a good relationship with Duncan. Fran was killed during an investigation on Jimmy's home island, Fairisle.
Though I enjoy the series, I love the books more.

Oh bless you Kitty for starting this thread My friend rang me yesterday (we are both Shetland fans) and she said ‘ who was the lady he was kissing’ and I couldn’t answer
I thought we were both losing it It’s so encouraging to know others were muddled

Thank you GNetters, I was a bit confused on Monday evening too ? But now the fog has cleared ? And I know who's who! ?

Gonegirl Fri 01-Mar-19 10:27:59

I have completely given up trying to remember who is the daughter's father and which of them is her stepfather. One moment I think I've got it sorted out and then it's gone again. And as to who is/was married to who, well...!

I just concentrate on the crime solving. That's hard enough.

Gonegirl Fri 01-Mar-19 10:30:30

annodomini I think I might try the books.

FountainPen Fri 01-Mar-19 11:38:48

Thank you annodomini. I've been rewatching the first series which was based on Red Bones which I believe is the third book in the series.

In the TV adaptation, Jimmy and Cassie are talking about her mother's death and Cassie says: "Sometimes I get angry at her for leaving us but that doesn't make sense. It wasn't her fault she got ill." so that sounds different from the books.

lemongrove Fri 01-Mar-19 11:47:48

I agree Gonegirl in fact I thought it was Jimmy who was the real Father ( he seems to care more about her.)

We spend a lot of time asking ‘what did he say’? Of each other during Shetland, ( the accents) but it’s worth it.

Watching Trapped (Iceland) and the terrain is very like Shetland Isles. Not so far away I suppose.

Farmor15 Fri 01-Mar-19 11:49:52

Yes, books are better and everything is much clearer. The one where Cassie's mother dies is very tense and sad - not really a spoiler as you know she's dead from TV series. Ann Cleeves said last book "Wild fire" was going to be last in series and it's excellent, but best to read them in order. My library is great for getting them in if I request.
I enjoy the TV series too, but get confused sometimes as I tend to remember stuff from books which is different.

Gonegirl Fri 01-Mar-19 11:50:37

I always have the subs on. (as I do with most things)

annodomini Fri 01-Mar-19 11:53:58

FountainPen, I've been re-reading Red Bones in which Fran and Cassie are visiting London and Jimmy is feeling lonely. I think it's in the 4th book Blue Lightning that they lose Fran.
Although Dougie Henshall is a fine actor and admittedly a bit 'tasty', I wish he looked more like the Jimmy Perez of the books!

Gonegirl Fri 01-Mar-19 11:59:57

I don't like Dougie Henshall. He said something nasty to me on Twitter. (Can't remember what it was though)

LullyDully Fri 01-Mar-19 13:54:31

Ah so there we are. Thought it was just me.

BlueBelle Fri 01-Mar-19 14:58:20

I use the subs for all dramas Easier than trying to keep up with muffles or accents

kittylester Fri 01-Mar-19 15:44:00

Thank you all! Does anyone know where Alice fits in - They seem to have history.

Luckygirl Fri 01-Mar-19 16:34:23

?Alice was a friend of Perez' wife Fran.

kittylester Fri 01-Mar-19 17:17:09

Did we know that before?
