We watched the latest episode yesterday and I realised that I have lost track of the personal relationships - could someone please remind me. Thank you.

I love Shetland even though I often have no flipping idea what is going on.

Perez, Cassie and Fran lived in Fran's dream house overlooking the sea & Cassie went to the small local school (not in lerwick) and that was the life Fran wanted for Cassie. She had left London for it. I think the grandparents were still in/near London

Perez was more 9-5 than Duncam

At the time of her note re Cassie staying with Perez I think Duncan was still back and forth between the south and shetland and at that point had fingers in so many pies he just logistically wasnt about to do school runs etc so Cassie would have had to go south to grandparents and leave her school/home.

It wasnt so much about Duncan being "unsuitable" and more about Cassie getting to stay in her house/school IMO

Ah, that will help with the remembering sodapop. The 'bequeathing' bit. Thanks.

The books are better but I am still enjoying this series. I am reading Cold Earth where its mentioned a couple of times that Fran " bequeathed " her daughter to Perez in the event of her death. I think she felt Perez would be a more stable parent than Duncan.
I agree Luckygirl no shaving required.

Greyduster Sat 02-Mar-19 10:40:05

1inamillion we watched that one too! Agree; young, blond and dishy, but I prefer him slightly careworn!

Jalima1108 Sat 02-Mar-19 10:07:11

grin
Looks like there's a queue - I'll shove Alice out of the way

Luckygirl Sat 02-Mar-19 09:46:48

Shave! shock - no, definitely not! We all like a bit of rough!

MawBroon Sat 02-Mar-19 07:22:13

I’m getting a funny feeling about Alice too. The books are loads better, but as Celtic Noir goes this is very acceptable.
The last Jimmy Perez is excellent by the way - no spoiler alerts!

I like the series but agree that the books are better. The latest episode was very tense. Not sure I like or trust Alice.
I watched an old episode of Dalziel and Pascoe yesterday, Douglas Henshall was in it, he had longish hair and looked very dishy. He was the villain so it was different seeing him from a different perspective.
I do wish he would shave in the Shetland series though!

(Actually I think he and Fran were engaged not married when she died. She left a note saying if anything happened to her Cassie should stay in their home with Perez. Perez felt it was the least he could do after getting Cassies mum killed)

notanan2 Fri 01-Mar-19 23:13:40

Perez has 2 ex wives, Sarah then Fran. Fran had a daughter Cassie with Duncan. Duncan was a bit of a rogue so Cassie would have ended up moving south with grandparents if Perez hadnt given her the stability of staying in her home and school on shetland.

He f***ed up and Fran got killed by suspects in one of his murder investigations

Fran was a very popular artist so her friends keep popping up in storylines.

In the books he ends up with a colleague not with this married friend.

I did offer, but.......
You're down the queue, sorry Greyduster grin

MawBroon Fri 01-Mar-19 18:45:00

That was noble of you Greyduster - the true spirit of self- sacrifice!
I noticed this series that the credits are for the “characters created by Anne Cleeves” so I suspect we have moved on from the books.
But talking of them, did anybody hear AC on Desert Island Discs?
I was prompted to download the latest and the last Jimmy Perez Shetland book and did nothing else all day unti I had finished it!

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 18:31:09

The woman he was kissing is called Alice - she is married to a local Shetlander I've seen Alice's husband playing a nasty baddie in something else, can't remember what, so this does not bode well...….

A brief resume of the characters:

Greyduster Fri 01-Mar-19 17:37:04

I’ve read all the Shetland books and watched all the TV series, and I don’t remember her cropping up anywhere. Perhaps they suddenly thought he needed some love interest. Which he does. I did offer, but.......

kittylester Fri 01-Mar-19 17:17:09

Did we know that before?

Luckygirl Fri 01-Mar-19 16:34:23

?Alice was a friend of Perez' wife Fran.

kittylester Fri 01-Mar-19 15:44:00

Thank you all! Does anyone know where Alice fits in - They seem to have history.

BlueBelle Fri 01-Mar-19 14:58:20

I use the subs for all dramas Easier than trying to keep up with muffles or accents

LullyDully Fri 01-Mar-19 13:54:31

Ah so there we are. Thought it was just me.

Gonegirl Fri 01-Mar-19 11:59:57

I don't like Dougie Henshall. He said something nasty to me on Twitter. (Can't remember what it was though)

annodomini Fri 01-Mar-19 11:53:58

FountainPen, I've been re-reading Red Bones in which Fran and Cassie are visiting London and Jimmy is feeling lonely. I think it's in the 4th book Blue Lightning that they lose Fran.
Although Dougie Henshall is a fine actor and admittedly a bit 'tasty', I wish he looked more like the Jimmy Perez of the books!

Gonegirl Fri 01-Mar-19 11:50:37

I always have the subs on. (as I do with most things)

Farmor15 Fri 01-Mar-19 11:49:52

Yes, books are better and everything is much clearer. The one where Cassie's mother dies is very tense and sad - not really a spoiler as you know she's dead from TV series. Ann Cleeves said last book "Wild fire" was going to be last in series and it's excellent, but best to read them in order. My library is great for getting them in if I request.
I enjoy the TV series too, but get confused sometimes as I tend to remember stuff from books which is different.
