BBC comedy?

I've been wondering why the BBC can provide such good radio comedies yet such dire TV ones. Warren is awful, Mrs Brown's Boys is a 70s throwback, Fleabag is not only not funny but actively offensive etc etc.
QI and the various comedy panel shows are good but the sit coms? Just no.
Somehow Channel 4 does them well. From the early days of Cheers and the incomparable Frasier to Father Ted and the IT crowd they provide comedy gold. Currently Derry Girls is excellent. Amazing to find such fun against a sectarian background. Of course it's the characters that do it!
Come on BBC what's wrong with you?

Liz08 - you're right about "The Unbelievable Truth" - that is one I DO enjoy!

I used to love the IT Crowd!
Downloaded the lot of them from iplayer introduced them to my 16 yr old dd who absolutely thinks they are so funny. We often watch them together. Most of my colleagues, the ones a bit younger than myself have never heard of it... oh well their loss!

I never 'got' Monty Python.

I loved Nish Kumar's 'Mash Report' and hope they will bring it back for another run. We need good satire in these days of political tomfoolery.

Tried Derry Girls a couple of nights ago and did not see a single funny thing in it. What is wrong with me? There are some good films on after 9pm on various channels. I also like watching the country music and Irish music channel until midnight, very relaxing.
Hardcore Pawn can be very funny. Its about a family run pawn shop in Dallas. Some of the customers are unbelievable!!! Apparently its all true.

Well it's all subjective, isn't it. What suits one doesn't suit another. Personally Mrs.Brown's Boys makes me laugh more than anything else on. And I love HIGNFY and WILTY.
And anything with Lee Mack. I did love Mum and hope they do another series.
I'm a bit disappointed with Warren as I usually enjoy Martin in anything.

henetha Sun 10-Mar-19 11:14:02

Mrs.Brown's Boys . it should read.

harrigran Sun 10-Mar-19 11:14:58

We watched Warren the other day and I thought it was dire, we deleted the series record.
I think there is so much you dare not mention on TV in case you cause offence that they have removed every ounce of humour.
We have resorted to watching old box sets like 'allo 'allo.

Agree with dragonfly46 - Lee Mack is a must for me. David Mitchell usually good too. New Alan Partridge show has been very well reviewed but I was somewhat underwhelmed.

It’s not just comedy that’s going wrong for me. I don’t like Lauren Laverne on Desert Island Discs either.

kittylester Sun 10-Mar-19 11:21:54

Me too dragonfly!!

Luckygirl Sun 10-Mar-19 11:22:31

Upstart Crow is the best comedy BEEB have put out recently.

Great choices, seconded.

Think Martin is worth better thought doc Martin was about as far as he should go.tried warren liked the first episode then waned off after second. No. Not for me.

maxdecatt Sun 10-Mar-19 11:47:23

Comedy is all about timing and being dead-pan. "Modern" comics think that laughing at their own jokes is what a comedian does. Take Michael MacIntyre, he has not got a clue about timing or dead-panning, yet audiences love the guy as he laughs at himself...or is he actually laughing at the stupid audience that he is taking money from? He would not get a bit part 25 years ago. The female comics are worse than the men. They think it is the in-thing to be more foul mouthed and offensive than the men, Think Jo Brand for starters.

maxdecatt Sun 10-Mar-19 11:49:57

For perfect timing and dead-pan comedy you will not beat Dad's Army. It never ages, is always funny and is true British humour.

Agree the Beeb have nothing much to offer in the way of comedy. Agree Lee Mack is funny and works well opposite David Mitchell. Have gone off HIGNFY, Merton and Hislop have become a bit smug IMO. The Americans seem to have made a better fist of comedy without swearing since Friends, Frasier, Becker. All three generations at Peardrop Castle do enjoy Modern Family.

How I miss Victoria Wood! I could watch Dinner Ladies over and over again and still find something funny I've missed before

NannyG123 Sun 10-Mar-19 12:12:15

Mustn't forget only fools and horses. which I still watch and find funny. But I agree nothing on BBC funny now.

123coco Sun 10-Mar-19 12:12:24

Fleabag is first class. But not for the easyily offended. Deserves an award. Some of radio 4’s comedy are throwbacks to the 40’s and 50’s!

Marieeliz Sun 10-Mar-19 12:14:10

dragonfly46 I love Would I lie to you, it is the only show which makes me laugh.

Saggi Sun 10-Mar-19 12:16:55

The only thing I ever laugh anymore at is QI..... I defy anybody not to find this funny and Quite Interesting. If I can’t find it on tv anywhere i’ll hunt it down on Netflix. Most tv progs are dire now ... thank goodness for Netflix and also for their ,own- made shows. By producing their own stuff they show off the superior quality..... also you cannot beat the documentaries made by Ken Burns.... if it weren’t for Ken and QI .... I wouldn’t bother turning the box on.

littleflo Sun 10-Mar-19 12:20:43

Did anyone watch Home. This made me chuckle out loud a couple of times. Even, impossible to please, DH enjoyed it.

Bennan Sun 10-Mar-19 12:20:53

I agree. Dinner ladies is superb and WILTY is a must see. I gave Warren a try and was very disappointed, Mrs. Brown’s Boys is getting old and tired. QI is still excellent and I will always watch As Time Goes By. There is too much anger and angst in humour today. A sign of the times! Oh, and Upstart Crow is a must!

I wish they'd do a new series of Clare in the Community - R4. Deliciously un PC, it used to crack me up. But IMO Sally Phillips is always brilliant.
