BBC comedy?

I've been wondering why the BBC can provide such good radio comedies yet such dire TV ones. Warren is awful, Mrs Brown's Boys is a 70s throwback, Fleabag is not only not funny but actively offensive etc etc.
QI and the various comedy panel shows are good but the sit coms? Just no.
Somehow Channel 4 does them well. From the early days of Cheers and the incomparable Frasier to Father Ted and the IT crowd they provide comedy gold. Currently Derry Girls is excellent. Amazing to find such fun against a sectarian background. Of course it's the characters that do it!
Come on BBC what's wrong with you?

And as for the 6.60 Radio 4 slot - it is either brilliant or totally dire and cringeworthy.

I so agree Jane nothing on the BBC TV makes me laugh except HIGNFY.

I heard an excellent first episode of ‘A Charles Paris Mystery’ with Bill Nighy on BBC Sounds yesterday. I just wish all the episodes were available (weekly show) as I would like to binge listen.

The beeb are good at clever comedy - my favourites include Mum and The Cafe - but they don't do then often enough.

I cannot think of anything I have watched on TV in the last 10 years that was remotely funny. Warren is dire. I know I am showing my age but I used to enjoy "That Was the Week That Was*.

I love Mrs Brown's Boys.

Framilode Sun 10-Mar-19 09:52:45

I adore Fleabag. My husband is shocked by it though.

M0nica Sun 10-Mar-19 10:01:12

Charleygirl15. yes, I loved That Was the Week That Was and when I remember back and occasionally seeing excerpts replayed. It was, at times_vicious_. But it was clever and witty and assumed that its audience were intelligent enough to understand it. In other words, it was not dumbed down.

I love the Charles Paris mysteries, but often forget to listen, it is on at a time when I am usually out or busy round the garden. I do enjoy Just a Minute and I'm sorry, I haven't a clue and, intermittently, The Now Show

I did find Mrs Brown funny the first time around but now it's over exposed ( there is a joke there somewhere).
Sitcoms on BBC are dire I can't think of any which I followed up after the first episode. Warren is the latest in the weak and predictable offerings.

All the good comedies have gone forever I'm afraid and now there's very little, if anything that makes me laugh as I used to do.
TV is abysmal and only now caters for the " new age " in so-called comedy and other off the wall programmes.
Talking pictures is the only channel I have any interest in these days.

Fflaurie Sun 10-Mar-19 10:26:17

Agree 100%, in fact I don't even listen or watch BBC anymore.

gillyknits Sun 10-Mar-19 10:30:26

I agree Kittylester. Mum is one of the best comedies that BBC has done for ages. Not much else to laugh at though. ☹️

I quite enjoy Warren and Fleabag but I think the golden age of TV comedy was many years ago. Things like Dad's Army, The Good Life and Open All Ours, even Last of the Summer Wine, Just Good Friends and As Time Goes By have thankfully been repeated on either Drama or Yesterday channels. They're just a good now. As the cliche goes - they don't make 'em like that anymore.

GrannyIris5 Sun 10-Mar-19 10:37:37

We like Still Game now on BBC Scotland, available on Virgin Media. Hubby often listens to radio 4 and the comedy on there in the mornings.

jusnoneed Sun 10-Mar-19 10:38:28

I liked Mrs Browns Boys when first shown but don't ant to keep seeing them.
It's a mystery why no one seems able to produce funny, non offensive comedy. We had so much to enjoy in the 70s/80s.
I caught the end of Warren the other evening, what on earth possessed Martin Clunes to takes part in that drivel?

I rarely watch the BBC or ITV now, only a few things I like. The radio is getting as bad, used to have 5Live on all day but now the presenters seem to like to only voice their own opinions and spend the time shouting down others. The woman on in the mornings is terrible for asking a question and then pulling the speaker/answer to pieces if she doesn't agree with them (often shouting over them) and in the afternoon a chap called Nihal, bangs on about race issues and how hard done by the people of ethnic minority are treated.

Man about the House was always my favourite. Those great fashions and the lovely Richard O'Sullivan.

NotSpaghetti Sun 10-Mar-19 10:47:38

Radio4 comedy in the 6.30 slot is generally dire I think. Some of the old shows are ok (I don't mind "Just a Minute" though it's fairly flabby - and The News Quiz sometimes raises a smile) but mostly I sigh and switch over to Radio3.
I can't think of much I've enjoyed on the radio - but plenty I haven't. Saturday Night Fry, Ed Reardon's Week, 28 Acts, Bridget Christie, The Now Show... All very dull in my opinion.

sarahellenwhitney Sun 10-Mar-19 10:48:48

21c comedy, there are exceptions, appear to rely on the F word to get laughs
Mrs B's Boys I find very funny but does it need the constant use of F which I consider irrelevant and shows when we see reruns of past comedy how popular they were and still are without the use of this 'word' ?

Mamissimo Sun 10-Mar-19 10:49:58

I think comedy has to resonate with your life to work and the current comedies on the beeb are aimed fair and square at people under 50. Our life view is different so we don’t find them funny.

Most of the comedy we view with nostalgia was from when we were younger too. My parents couldn’t stand Monty Python ?

M0nica Sun 10-Mar-19 10:53:47

Neither could I, I didn't find The Goons very funny either and I was the 'right' generation for both of those

Liz08 Sun 10-Mar-19 10:54:03

Radio 4 have many programmes I like to listen to as podcasts.
For a bit of learning with humour try:
The Unbelievable Truth, The Museum of Curiosity, The News Quiz.
Also there's a weekly podcast by the QI Elves called "No Such Thing as a Fish" at qi.com/podcast. There are dozens of back episodes to download. They are all interesting, funny and a bit sweary.
This portable entertainment that I can summon up anytime I want, all makes the dreaded housework much more bearable for me - I remember wishing for this exact scenario over 40 years ago when I was a new housewife grin

Jaycee5 Sun 10-Mar-19 10:55:11

I didn't mind Fleabag although I haven't bothered with the second series yet.
I haven't tried Derry Girls but I'll give it a try. I don't watch much UK comedy now and I agree about things like Mrs Brown's Boys. I just don't get it.

rizlett Sun 10-Mar-19 10:56:00

I've been enjoying 'Cuckoo' on iplayer.

Disappointed with 'Warren' as I love Martin.

NotSpaghetti Sun 10-Mar-19 10:56:38

Re TV, you're right Jane10 Warren is awful, Mrs Brown's Boys is a 70s throwback, Fleabag isn't funny... but I also think that even "format" shows like Mock the Week and QI are tired and dull.
I think they are trying too hard for a younger audience- that they won't attract.
My adult children barely watch TV. Everything they watch is streamed it seems.

I enjoy Not Going Out and Would I lie to you but then I love Lee Mack.
