Only ever listen to the News Quiz
Recommendations please for thorn- and nettle-proof gauntlets – if possible vegan
I used to have radio 4 on constantly but there is rarely anything that interests me any more. Even the archers has gone downhill and is, dare I say it, tacky and boring. Is it just me?
Only ever listen to the News Quiz
Never miss the Archers at 7.00, even though many of the characters annoy me! And I love my daily dose of John Humphries
Enjoy listening to 'The Life Scientific' - can reccomend this week's, Richard Peto and smoking epidemiology.
Right.
I've recently 'invested' in two new radios as I have never really listened to radio progs since my 30s
I dislike women presenting music programmes so no music thanks.
Interesting (but not heavyweight or political) chat, and ideas for progs to aquaint myself with would be most welcome. Thank you.
They both have Bluetooth and I've only listened to things from YouTube via Bluetooth so far.
If I don't find something interesting soon, it's a lot of money wasted.
BTW...I had no idea that digital radio uses more electricity? ??
PS Find Woman's hour very "screamy" and now loathe it! Dame Jenni is very self-congratualtory and most of the topics[when I listen] completely unintersting...
Sorry I listen to Capital Radio. I’m 66.
Me too - I used R4 as my anchor when the DCs were young - it was informative, educational, funny... Now? Pshhhh. Nothing of any interest on, except the [biaised] news which DH listens to obsessively!
Ignore typos please!
I still love Radio 4. There are many gems if you look for them.
I think the Today programme has been taken over by Brexit to the detriment of a once superb and multifaceted programme, but it still has it’s good moments. I am not giving up on it just yet. I love Justin and I will miss John when he retires.
However I hate Woman’s Hour. Agree with all the other posters we political correctness. And it is so outdated...do they never thinks that men have rights too. But mainly I can’t stand the presenters.
Jenny Murray is out of touch, oily and patronising.
And Jane Garvey is so full of herself and obsequious in her dealings with the guests.
NkfDumpling. Radio 4 Extra is an archive entertainment network broadcasting classic comedy, drama and features. It's accessible through radio and TV channels - Freeview and Freesat channel 708, Sky channel 0131 or Virgin Media channel 910 and also through your computer via the BBC home page.
I prefer to listen through my laptop so that I can access all the archive material. Go to the BBC home page and select Sounds at the top. Go to 4e to listen live. Select schedules top right and again 4e. From there you have a choice of this week's schedules. To go back even further select calendar. Selecting the month and year top left will take you further back.
craftyone sust-it ranked Pure DAB radios by energy cost. Using the average UK tariff, prices Dec 2018 ranged from £1.22 to £3.17 per year which includes in use and stand by costs and is based on four hours of use per day.

I bought a cheap mini wireless microphone that connects to my tablet and take it with me if I’m in a different room to the tablet. Cost me about £22 and works really well without breaking the bank!
digital radio uses a lot more electricity so I don`t use dab on my portable radios. I must try radio 4 extra on my dab plugin, in the meantime I have lbc on in small doses usually around 8-10pm, when they have their questions to a lawyer, doctor, a panel etc. A few of their presenters are excellent but I never listen from 10-6 at all
Local radio remains good but I cannot stand babble, so don`t take much of that either.
Dumpling, R4 Extra is rather interesting. Has drama, documentaries and is on digital radio only. If you use a tablet it can be downloaded as part of an app. There are two. BBC iPlayer radio and a new one called BBC Sounds. They are switching off the iPlayer in the Autumn when hopefully Sounds will be easier to use.
(By system I mean having a radio in each room. A couple don’t accept digital radio - which has only recently become useable in our area)
Totally agree about Woman’s Hour. That gets turned off now. The Today programme interviewers are too full of themselves so the interviewees hardly get a word in and the afternoon plays are rarely uplifting.
But, I have tinnitus and having a background noise helps mask it, I don’t want constant music and the other stations are either too high brow classic or too modern for me. So Radio Four waffling away in the background it is.
We really aught to update our system and get modern with Alexa or something. What’s Radio Four Extra?
I’ve listened to R4 for most of my adult life. Not so long ago I heard a discussion on R4 about the way it was being changed to appeal to younger audiences. The endless repeats drive me nuts although I enjoy the gardening, food and consumer programmes. I’ve taken to listening to Any Questions and Answers on Saturdays or on catch up.
I rarely listen to it all day these days. Instead I take audio books from the library and listen to those. So much more
satisfying.
It makes me cross that these changes are dressed up as attracting a younger audience, whilst IMO it’s all about cutting costs.
I find both Radio 2 and Radio 4 increasingly irritating lately and have swapped to my local BBC radio station during the day whilst driving for work. The lunchtime and afternoon presenters are particularly good and knock spots off many of the bigger 'names' on radio.
In the evening if there's nothing on TV I want to watch I listen to podcasts-D Island,Great lives and history and natural histories. So I'm grateful for the wealth of material.
DH used to listen to radio 4 all the time - and often told me what I'd missed on Womans Hour !- But can't stand it now and listens to Radio4 extra dramas. Is it an age thing ?A lot of our friends feel the same.
sorry should have said the Inteviewer/presenter is Edi Stark
i've been listening to Radio Scotland ,Stark Talk on Wednesdays at 1.30 .Some really good interviews well worth a listen.Today was Martin Compson from Line of Duty ....and loads of other things I haven't seen but will watch now I know about them.He came across as a lovely grounded young man .I've heard a few now as its on when we drive back from a job at the other side of the country and we've enjoyed every one we've heard
Gave up on R4 a long time ago and now listen to R4 Extra Drama on BBC Sounds.
I’m so pleased that I’m not the only one who finds Woman’s Hour a pain with its ultra PC and feminist attitudes. I pity any man who dares to appear on the show, Jane G would have them for breakfast. I prefer Jennie Murray.
I stopped listening to the Archers abruptly on the 60th anniversary. Before the event they had lots of trailers suggesting something really dramatic and different was going to happen - and then all they did was kill off another character in a bog standard incident and then try to get us to believe that neither Pat nor Helen had ever been told anything about pre-eclampsia. Something snapped andI ahven't listened since.
I am getting fed up with the way they are cutting costs by constantly reading books to us. Of a morning, one book at 9.45, another one at 10.45 and now another at 12.15. I know the 10.45 one is dramatised, but still. I am fed up with having to keep turning the radio off and then miss the next programme.
I have recently started to listen to R3 rather than Classic FM and I am rather enjoying it.
I used to enjoy radio 4 but also got fed up with the Archers felt it started getting like tv soaps and also women’s hour agree with Lully Dully so I’ve started listening to radio 4 extra catching up with dramas and plays I missed when working.
I still enjoy Radio 4 and my friends on the Archers. However I am fed up with the Today programme that just bangs on about Brexit and the so, so politically correct Women's Hour. I consider myself to be a feminist but they are so self righteous at times.
I listen to Radio 4 by default, really. I love music, but like to choose what I want to hear and when. Plus the inane chatter of most music station presenters gets on my wick!
When there is something I don't like on Radio 4, I switch to Radio 4 Extra. Money Box is currently on Radio 4, so I'm listening to Gullivers Travels on Extra.
That is another advantage of having an Amazon Echo, I don't have to fiddle around changing stations, just ask Alexa to do it!
