Jeremy Kyle: MP calls for ITV show to be axed for good https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-48265740
disclaimer <I have never watched the Jeremy Kyle show>

Following the suicide of a participant, there have been calls for the show to be axed on the grounds that it exploits vulnerable people.

But don’t a lot of programmes do that?

What about the harrowing interviews of people whose lives have been ripped apart by tragedy, crime or natural disaster?

If the Jeremy Kyle show is axed, shouldn’t the broadcast media take a long hard look at themselves in the way they report other things?

I agree with Sarah 65.. we are a cruel society

It should have never been allowed in the first place. Ii have seen it once or twice but i dont like it. I once worked with a group of undergraduate students and this was their favourite programme. They would sit in their jamies and giggle at the people on the show. I would have thought they would have more intelligence. It shows ordinary people in a bad light. However we had a neighbour who boasted of their time on the show. They were so impressed by being in a hotel and on tv it was probably the highlight of their lives. How sad. Axe it immediately

Having been told about this programme I watched it two or three times. It truly is the modern equivalent of poking those with mental problems with a stick, a jolly Victorian pastime. So much shouting, violence and aggression - how can it possibly benefit anyone apart from the TV company - and Jeremy Kyle. Sad people with presumably miserable lives who need help and see this as a chance to get some help and also be on TV. What a reflection of our times that it is so popular - or perhaps some people never change and programmes like this save them travelling to the local asylum and finding a stick. Makes you want to weep.

I've only ever seen snippets of JK and believe me, it was enough. It's been likened to a 'bear pit' which tells us all we need to know.
I don't know why vulnerable people go on as they are exploited for so-called entertainment. It can't possibly be a good thing to bare all on national television in such a way. The only thing that a journalist is interested in is the story - doesn't matter who or what as long as they get the story. Many have admitted that they'd betray a friend for the story. It's a sad sign of our modern times.

It should have been cancelled years ago. The constant naming and shaming that is on there really sickens me the few times I have seen it.
You never see what happens after all the shouting has died down, if the counselling supposedly offered actually produces a positive result!

GabriellaG54 Wed 15-May-19 10:01:06

Dross for the dim and dysfunctional.

Pudding123 Wed 15-May-19 10:01:43

Yes it should go,it is vile as is its presenter

Shazmo24 Wed 15-May-19 10:02:26

Breaking News: Its been axed!
The only thing other than for Stewart Dymonds family & friends is that all those people involved with the programme will now be jobless
Also, will programmes like I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here should be axed???

jaybee66 Wed 15-May-19 10:04:46

Does anyone know if the people on the show get paid for appearing on it? I have always wondered why they go on it when they know what is going to happen.

Urmstongran Wed 15-May-19 10:04:55

It’s been axed. Permanently!
Good.
The end of the JK Show.
?

nannypiano Wed 15-May-19 10:05:57

I think it's common knowledge that the lie detector is probably wrong as often as it's right, otherwise courts would surely use it. JK seems to swear by it though, which is wrong. No one gets the benefit of the doubt as far as he's concerned, which is so wrong and unjust. Imagine telling the truth and when your whole life and future could depend on the outcome, you are accused of guilt and have no way of justifying yourself. No wonder that poor guy felt bad enough to end his life. Do I think the show should be banned for good? Yes I certainly do.

GrannyMosh Wed 15-May-19 10:08:04

It has been cancelled permanently according to a newsflash on the internet. Not before time! Pity it took a death to force someone's hand.

dragonfly46 Wed 15-May-19 10:08:40

Hooray that the evil programme has been axed. Why should the tv companies make money out of other people's misfortune!

Eloethan Wed 15-May-19 10:09:48

Good.

Nanny27 Wed 15-May-19 10:11:32

Thank goodness they've taken this vile programme of TV. I find it hard to feel much sympathy for the participants who will do anything, including risking their relationship, reputation or family to get their faces on tv. As for the audience who enjoy the spectacle either in the studio or at home, well, words fail me. I do of course feel so sad that a man took his life because of it.

cc Wed 15-May-19 10:15:14

Yes.
Its a truly horrible show that (in many cases) exploits less advantaged people who want to be on TV.
I should add that I've seen it when my daughter had a badly broken leg and was watching daytime TV.

Christingle Wed 15-May-19 10:18:21

Loath this show, will be glad it goes. However, the public who appear on it have to take responsibility for what they are doing, no one breaks their arms to go on the show. I’m sick of this continual blame culture when it’s always someone else’s responsibility and not their own.

Anniebach Wed 15-May-19 10:21:30

The programme has been axed

Nanniejc1 Wed 15-May-19 10:21:57

I don’t watch any of the reality tv programmes ,they are all rubbish but think if Jeremy Kyle is being axed so should ‘Love Island’ & all the other shows that are like this, there have been two suicides connected to that program. These people relish being in the limelight but I really can’t see why anyone would want to ‘air their dirty washing ‘ on live tv in front of millions of people.

kazziecookie Wed 15-May-19 10:22:42

I have only watched it a couple of times out of curiosity. I cannot stand any programmes where people are shouting and falling out with each other. I think it is right that it is now being axed.
I think they need to look into how some of these reality shows effect the people who appear on them. They have had other things happening like the Love Island contestant taking his life.
My daughters friend was on Come Dine With Me and he said it was edited in a way as to show him in a bad light and he hadn’t said things in the way they were showing it.
I have a guest house and are regularly asked to go on Four In A Bed. No chance!

Rosina Wed 15-May-19 10:27:33

I do agree Christingle - there is far too much of a 'no shame no blame' culture now when people do outrageous things and then seem to feel they can gloss over whatever has happened and carry on - like the MP lying about speeding; she was initially saying that she was a victim - 'like Jesus'!! - and seemingly would have had the brass neck to continue, regardless, if she thought her constituents would allow it. However the people who appeared on the JK show, and many of those on other reality shows, are clearly picked for their emotional and mental fragility in the hope that they will not need much provocation to explode and provide 'interesting' TV. I read yesterday that JK participants are given alcohol beforehand and offered and suitably 'chavvy ' clothes in order to suit a certain profile. What a relief that it is cancelled.

Miep1 Wed 15-May-19 10:28:58

I am not worried whether this show goes or not - the people on it know full well what they are letting themselves in for and the audience are no different from the million or so people who sit baying at home! If they axe this for good however, I think others such as Love Island, I'm a Celebrity, Big Brother and all the rest should be axed as well...I'm sure that I have read of suicides/marriage break-ups etc allied to these. I wonder how many people watch those? Incidentally, the people in the audience of JK show could be interchanged with the participants!

jangeo44 Wed 15-May-19 10:32:05

Probably sound unsympathetic - but these people know what the show entails so why in earth would you want to put yourself through all that humiliation to air your dirty linen in public. Is it just to be on T.V?

Oldwoman70 Wed 15-May-19 10:32:47

It is being reported that the programme had people who would trawl the internet (Facebook, etc.) looking for people who posted about their problems, they would then become a "friend" and suggest they go on the programme.

Someone who worked on the programme is reported as saying they would spend a long time tearing someone apart and just 10 minutes trying to put them back together.

Having watched Jeremy Kyle shouting at someone his face distorted confirmed my belief that he is a bully. He wasn't interested in "helping" anyone he just wanted to take advantage of people in order to cater to the audiences basest instincts and make himself very rich.

Theoddbird Wed 15-May-19 10:40:38

It should have been axed years ago. It has taken this tragedy to get it done....so sad
