The fact that it's 1800 was made clear at the beginning of the first episode!
Lovely picnic on the beach, Perranporth?!!

SirChenjin Tue 23-Jul-19 08:32:25

There was mention of a “new century “ on Sunday so I think 1800

merlotgran Mon 22-Jul-19 20:59:08

This series is set at the turn of the century because the next book begins in 1810 (ten years later)

Debbie Horsefield is filling in the gap.

I wish they'd just stuck to the books.

SueDonim Mon 22-Jul-19 20:49:47

Capt Despard was a real life person and so was the would-be assassin of the King, Hadfield. He tried to kill George III in 1800 so presumably this series is set around that time.

Callistemon Mon 22-Jul-19 20:25:46

Is this supposed to be about 1810?

If so, the slavery issues could be going on for another 23 years.
We already had 'lunatic asylums' by 1810 but they were not widespread. I didn't think that Bedlam was the only one.

JenniferEccles Mon 22-Jul-19 16:46:29

That's true SirChenjin but I just used those as examples of what I think is to come.

If I am wrong, then I will be pleased. At any rate, it's still quite enjoyable Sunday night viewing.

SirChenjin Mon 22-Jul-19 15:13:32

Slavery and mental health issues are not really 'politically correct' topics are they?

merlotgran Mon 22-Jul-19 13:23:55

I'd forgotten about Horace.

JenniferEccles Mon 22-Jul-19 13:15:22

It will be interesting to see just how many politically correct topics are covered in this series, and as it is the only one not based on Winston Grahams books we are at the mercy of the political leanings of the woman writer, heaven help us!

We have already had the evils of slavery covered, and an ongoing mental health story with the dastardly George.

It might be fun to tick them off as they appear. Any predictions anyone?

SueDonim Mon 22-Jul-19 13:11:48

I think Ross does know in his heart of hearts about Valentine. Valentine was a seven-month baby, wasn't he?

Callistemon Mon 22-Jul-19 13:10:32

Oh, yes, Gonegirl, Ross knows
and Demelza suspects too.

Gonegirl Mon 22-Jul-19 13:07:58

Ah. Agreeing with Maggiemaybe there.

Gonegirl Mon 22-Jul-19 13:06:56

Does Ross not realise? Or Demelza, when she looks at him?

SirChenjin Mon 22-Jul-19 13:03:37

Valentine (and associations with love and devotion), a child born 9 months after the liaison (which George knew about if I recall correctly) and it doesn't take much to put 2 and 2 together, I suppose.

Poor George - I'm actually feeling a bit sorry for him in this series!

Maggiemaybe Mon 22-Jul-19 12:55:05

Though it always seemed strange to me that George would look at Valentine’s long dark curls and immediately think “Ross” instead of just “Elizabeth”.

kittylester Mon 22-Jul-19 12:49:10

Yes, keep up, gonegirl. grin That's why he has long dark hair.

SirChenjin Mon 22-Jul-19 12:48:58

It's always implied that Valentine was the result of the rape which was toned down in that series to make out it wasn't actually rape, much to the anger of many.

Gonegirl Mon 22-Jul-19 12:44:09

Is Valentine Ross's son on the quiet?

SirChenjin Mon 22-Jul-19 12:40:55

Poor Drake - but I reckon she'll succumb to his charms, out of pity for his lovesick wee face, if nothing else.

I did notice the waves Callistemon! The bingo card was groaning under the weight of Poldark moments last night grin

Greyduster Mon 22-Jul-19 07:21:11

merlot if Morwenna has noticed it, maybe she’ll find it a ‘turn on’! Something has to before he starts casting longing looks at Prudie!

Calendargirl Mon 22-Jul-19 06:58:13

Yes, when they were all promenading in the evening, I thought Doctor Enys’s wife looked pregnant. Sometimes difficult to tell with the empire line frocks.

SueDonim Sun 21-Jul-19 23:55:54

Horace the pug!

merlotgran Sun 21-Jul-19 23:17:31

Horace?

merlotgran Sun 21-Jul-19 23:16:19

Has anyone else noticed that the end of Drake's nose wiggles when he talks? grin

He'll probably stop doing it now.

SueDonim Sun 21-Jul-19 23:15:55

Apparently, Gabrielle Drake, who plays Dr Enys's wife, is pregnant again in real life. Will we be seeing more of Horace in further episodes? I do hope so, even though he must be about 120 by now!
