I've just watched a TV programme about Boris's mum. I never realised she was an arttist in the 1970s, Amazing woman, fantastic painter. Her paintings of when she was a patient in a mental hospital are extraordinary. Charlotte Johnson Wahl

Yes, I did know.

The one thing you could never call the Johnsons is ordinary.

Bridgeit Tue 23-Jul-19 22:31:55

Ohh don’t know what to say really, but this painting/ portrait is brilliant .

Anniebach Tue 23-Jul-19 22:37:15

I didn’t know, thank you trisher

She developed Parkinson's at a very young age and must have found life quite difficult.
She is very talented.

I think the whole family are quite intellectual but eccentric.

maddyone Tue 23-Jul-19 23:34:21

She has certainly caught Boris, as a young man, in this wonderful portrait. How sad that she developed Parkinsons at a young age. Whatever we all may think of the news today about Boris, I think she would have been a very proud mum. She was clearly a very talented woman.

I think you’re right Elaine.

She is still alive Maddy, but divorced Stanley in 1979.

She has been quoted as saying she has never voted Conservative and was amused that her right-leaning sons married left wingers. She has an amazing talent.

Excellent article from 2015 in The Tatler about this remarkable woman.

Boris did a brilliant self portrait at 12 years old: brilliant.
Same style as his mother.

The docu is called "Painting the Johnsons". If you can watch it it's really good. Some of the paintings very much reflect the 70s. Her story is incredible- 4 children, she spent months in a mental hospital because of OCD, lost her second husband to cancer and was diagnosed with Parkinson's at 40. Mind you she was lucky that they could afford to send the children to public schools.

EthelJ Wed 24-Jul-19 10:47:37

Elaine1 the other children seem quite sensible and measured in what they say.. Unfortunatley Boris seems to take after Stanley.

I love that portrait, She does seem to have captured something. She seems to be a very intersting woman

maddyone Wed 24-Jul-19 11:44:55

Thank you Pittcity, I thought she had died. I’m pleased to hear she’s still with us, whatever her politics I’m sure she will be a proud mum, but it must be hurtful to her to hear some of the things people say about her son.
She certainly is very talented, and despite the views of some people re Boris, she has produced clever and talented children (not just talking about Boris. )

She has also campaigned for more support for those with Parkinson's since they lost their specialist nurse in 2017 - the one they had was not replaced by their local CCG.

According to your link to the interesting article, MawBroon, her DIL writes for the Guardian - they are a politically diverse family who still manage to be very close.

Thank you for this thread. It encouraged me to do a bit of googling and I have enjoyed reading about this talented artist. I However, I was also amused by the picture (link above) that shows the young family with the Norland nanny employed when mum Charlotte was hospitalised. Boris seems to have quite a lascivious look in his face...he started young! Also surprised in the article which stated the nanny sometimes took baths with the children. I don’t think that would be approved of by the Norland institution.

Callistemon Wed 24-Jul-19 13:12:44

I think he just looks as if he's hoping she doesn't pinch his crisps!!

tiredoldwoman Wed 24-Jul-19 16:18:29

Gosh , what a wonderful Mum he has . This article has changed my opinion of him ! Where can I find the 'Painting with the Johnstons ' - Netflix ?

travelsafar Wed 24-Jul-19 16:24:56

Where did you see this program i would be interested to watch it.

trisher Wed 24-Jul-19 17:19:05

It's Sky Arts-a strange channel that I sometimes find little gems on!

Labaik Thu 25-Jul-19 13:52:36

Am I right in thinking that Stanley was also a womaniser....[apples and trees....]

seacliff Thu 25-Jul-19 13:58:25

Thanks for the recommendation, I would never have seen it otherwise. What an interesting woman, and family. How lovely for her that there is finally an exhibition of her work, wow she is prolific. A fascinating lady.

gmelon Thu 25-Jul-19 14:02:44

This sounds like am extremely interesting programme.
I was aware how talented she is and also quite troubled.
A look at her life would be very informative.
