Did anyone watch this new series? Just wonder if it’s worth a watch I don’t normally like war films/series.

annep1 Mon 11-Nov-19 23:20:45

Thanks SusieWoozie. Yes that's it. Brilliant series with superb acting by Bean. I agree one of the best things on tv.

SueDonim Mon 11-Nov-19 23:02:35

Well, that's what I wondered, Suzie. Would you ever actually tell your child that they were conceived through a criminal act. It seems brutal.

On a shallow level, I'm also loving the fashions and hair styles.

Ellianne Mon 11-Nov-19 22:57:07

Yes, the acting is excellent and the characters remain so true to their beliefs. I hope it continues to be as good in the future.

suziewoozie Mon 11-Nov-19 22:54:49

Broken that was the title

suziewoozie Mon 11-Nov-19 22:52:46

Sue of course he is her son, born of the rape she mentioned
ann the series about the priest - one of the best things ever on TV. Heartbreaking and gut wrenching

SueDonim Mon 11-Nov-19 22:13:54

I agree, Sean Bean is acting his socks off. The nuances of his performance are mesmerising. I'm glad he's doing something that showcases his talent. He hasn't always chosen the best parts during his career. grin

Does anyone else wonder if Webster is actually Nancy's son?

Six series! I can see that that could be made to happen as of course WW2 has plenty of material.

annep1 Mon 11-Nov-19 22:02:31

Sean Bean is great, I agree. Last thing we saw him in he was acting as a priest - can't remember title but he was wonderful.

Iam64 Mon 11-Nov-19 19:06:55

Sean Bean is such a great actor isn't he. His portrayal of the father in this story is just brilliant, he's totally believable. I've morphed into a total fan . As others have said, Lesley Manville and Helen Hunt are also excellent t
Great series - well done the BBC

Jane43 Mon 11-Nov-19 15:54:09

This series has really grown on me, mainly due to the performances of Sean Bean, Lesley Manville and Helen Hunt. What a cliffhanger to end with last night. Apparently there are six series planned so it could turn into something like Family At War from years ago.

I think Kasia will turn around into the firing line and deliberately get shot because she hates herself so much. It seems that Lois is going to marry Vernon so a future relationship between Harry and her will be thwarted. Sean Bean was going to say something to Robina last night, I do think they will get together eventually, lucky Robina!

Iam64 Mon 11-Nov-19 08:16:41

Gfplux, what an odd comment, to suggest the drama is deliberately being made inclusive.
The 1940's weren't heterosexual and white. It's a relief to see a drama that reflects that.

sodapop Mon 11-Nov-19 07:37:14

I'm looking forward to the next series as well. Hope they don't leave it too long.

suziewoozie Mon 11-Nov-19 07:31:35

Gfplux I was very surprised to read your post - there has been homosexuality as long as there has been human beings.

crystaltipps Mon 11-Nov-19 07:08:10

One of my neighbours is the daughter of a Polish pilot who couldn’t return to Poland in 1945. She tells of how her mother, a teenager in Warsaw in this period, delivered resistance leaflets and ran through tunnels to avoid the Nazis. Also how the Nazis would stop a tram get everyone out, look at their papers, then drag about 10 people off and shoot them just to keep the population terrified. Awful times.

SueDonim Mon 11-Nov-19 00:09:33

A good, suspenseful ending. It really brings home the precariousness of life during the war.

annep1 Sun 10-Nov-19 22:18:44

Can't wait for next series.

Calendargirl Sun 10-Nov-19 22:10:34

An explosive end! I thought I had stumbled into;
a) A James Bond film-‘World on Fire Will Return’, and
b) Casablanca- ‘Of all the gin joints in all the world’...

Lots to sort out, but mainly...
Will Douglas and Robina get it together? Thought it was going to happen, but no!
Have to wait for series 2.

Jane43 Fri 08-Nov-19 19:14:24

Once she undoes those buttons watch out! I think Douglas’s anxiety for his son and becoming a grandfather will change him too and they will start to get closer. War did break down class barriers significantly so I am still convinced it will happen.

Chestnut Wed 06-Nov-19 23:20:21

I definitely think Douglas and Robina will get together, there is a lot of chemistry from her side but I think it won't cross his mind unless she takes the lead.
Could it really work? She is so very buttoned up, not sure he is man enough to break down that frosty demeanour. Although we are beginning to see a slightly more gentle side of her, so maybe the war is chipping away at her sharp edges.

crystaltipps Tue 05-Nov-19 07:44:07

There were definitely homosexuals in the 1940s! There were also black communities in Liverpool, Bristol and London and Paris. It’s good that this series shows that. This reminded me of a conversation I once had with a young white South African girl who told me in all seriousness “we don’t have homosexuals in South Africa”.

Gfplux Mon 04-Nov-19 20:50:54

Are the present day producers trying to make the casting and/or the story inclusive.
My understanding of 1940 white heterosexual Britain seems at odds with this.

Welshwife Mon 04-Nov-19 15:50:03

Driving around our local countryside here in France we often say how we can understand how the resistance were so successful for quite a long time!
I thought he got from Paris to the Spain very quickly though and seemingly with no assistance with food and shelter it seems.

Barmeyoldbat Mon 04-Nov-19 14:59:30

Just watched the last episode and once again find it puzzling how the son managed to escape across France into Spain. ve the story but do find it a bit unbelievable at times.

Calendargirl Mon 04-Nov-19 13:35:29

Oh Merlotgran. Sorry you think Vernon is creepy. I think he is meant to emphasise the stiff upper lip, ‘what ho Johnny!’ good egg type of wartime RAF pilot. Lois would do well to marry him really, but bet she still hankers after drippy Harry who always looks half asleep and pretty bored by the whole thing. Sadly, Vernon is probably a bit dull compared to him though.
Have reversed my opinion of Robina, she seems to accept all these waifs and strays into her home.

Looks like even with rationing, she spread plenty of butter and jam on her toast/bread.

merlotgran Sun 03-Nov-19 22:41:05

Isn't Vernon just a little bit creepy? hmm

I love Lesley Manville's character and listen out for her one-liners. You do need a jolly good snob in a period drama.

Ellianne Sun 03-Nov-19 22:40:41

So sad, Hilda and her mother.
I understand the pertinent reason for the gay black musician in the story now.
