This started last night. It’s on again tonight, not sure how many episodes there will be.
I enjoyed it, the Profumo Affair was in the news when I was about 8 or 9, went over my head then obviously, but remember my parents were shocked that she was carrying on with the Minister for War and a Russian at the same time.
Not sure about Ben Miles’ appearance as Profumo, he looked a bit scary I thought. James Norton seemed an authentic Stephen Ward.

WishIwasyounger

Yes I agree.
A bit pointlessly confusing.

I was about 15 or 16, working, and remember it all going on. A terrible scandal at the time. Think Profumo spent the rest of his life working for good causes. In those days ‘nice’ girls didn’t, because the shame and fear of pregnancy was too much to risk. The pill was not freely available til mid 60s and then only to married women.
Given the amount of relationships the girls seemed to have, combined with the lack of reliable contraception at the time had they become pregnant it was either mother and baby homes ( and often adoption) or risking a back street abortion. A terrible choice indeed.

Christine had given birth when she was younger , poor girl ,
the baby died.

Christine Keeler was exploited by men from a very young age, first her step-father and his friends DS, later on by powerful but seedy men.

The girls were victims but were never portrayed as such and, quite honestly, I think that Christine Keeler suffered from this portrayal for the rest of her life whereas Profumo 'reformed ' and redeemed himself in the public eye by his charitable works, his wife standing by him.

I remember the case as it was widely reported for over a long period.

DS in previous post is superfluous, I did not type that!
Flippin' autocorrect.

Seems like final episode is next Sunday.

silverlining48 Mon 30-Dec-19 22:24:48

There will be 6 episodes apparently.

Charleygirl5 Mon 30-Dec-19 22:31:21

That is what I do not understand- at the start it said that there would be 6 episodes but at the end of tonight's episode it said that the concluding episode would be this Sunday.

BlueBelle Mon 30-Dec-19 22:39:28

I found tonight’s episode it pretty boring to be honest

Callistemon Mon 30-Dec-19 22:48:51

Yes, they said that the final episode is next Sunday.
I don't know how they could string it out much longer.

I think that watching the story unfold all those years ago was far more interesting than this dramatisation.

BlueBelle Mon 30-Dec-19 22:52:16

That’s exactly how I feel callistamon

mrswoo Mon 30-Dec-19 23:08:27

I thought tonight’s episode was far better than the first one. I found the first episode a bit confusing due to the jumping backwards and forwards in time.
I was at boarding school when the scandal broke and was probably too young anyway to fully understand what it was about but I remember the school stopped the delivery of newspapers until the court case was over!

Callistemon Mon 30-Dec-19 23:12:39

I think it is in six episodes, Bluebelle!

Christine Keeler was a young woman who had been sexually exploited from a young age and who continued to be exploited by these men. The general public, naively as it turned out, expected government ministers and the like to be fine, upstanding people. They were shocked by Profumo's behaviour but it appears that much of the blame was laid at a young woman's door.

I didn't find the first episode particularly engaging or enlightening and I found the portrayal of Profumo, Keeler and Rice-Davies fairly superficial. I haven't seen the second episode yet.

I didn't see the film Scandal - did anyone else ,and do you think it was better? (I love the Dusty Springfield/Pet Shop Boys record "Nothing has been proved").

Callistemon Mon 30-Dec-19 23:17:34

No, I didn't see the film perhaps I should watch out for it on tv; I can't get engrossed in this tv version.

QuaintIrene Mon 30-Dec-19 23:20:47

I can’t say I was impressed by it.
I was just too young to remember it all being in the papers, but my sister does and she says that CK was exploited.
The film “Scandal” was very good. The soundtrack brilliant. I’ve been singing along to Dusty all day !
Christine Keeler was much more beautiful than the actress playing her in this, I think.

Callistemon Mon 30-Dec-19 23:23:12

The actress is a lovely girl, very attractive.

However, Christine Keeler had a je-ne-sais-quoi which set her apart from other pretty girls.

QuaintIrene Mon 30-Dec-19 23:33:42

Oh yes, the actress is lovely. But CK was something else. She had glamour.

merlotgran Mon 30-Dec-19 23:41:43

I always thought it was the other way round. Christine Keeler had a plain, dare I say almost seedy, look about her whereas Mandy Rice Davies was chocolate box pretty.

Maggiemaybe Mon 30-Dec-19 23:42:01

If they announced that the series concludes next week, it must have been an error, as it’s a six parter. I really don’t see how they’re going to string this one out for another four hours. It was pretty slow tonight.

Callistemon Mon 30-Dec-19 23:50:00

Yes, Mandy R-D was chocolate box pretty
I didn't say Christine K was beautiful, just that she had a certain something which set her apart from other pretty girls.

merlotgran Tue 31-Dec-19 00:21:53

Yes she did. Maybe she just appeared older than her years to my sixteen year old self.

welbeck Tue 31-Dec-19 01:02:16

as to degrees of responsibility, freedom of choice etc, I have read that the brain is not fully formed esp in terms of judgment until age about 24-25. acc to neuro-psychologists.
don't suppose its gone backwards in the last 60 yrs.

Grandma2213 Tue 31-Dec-19 01:36:31

I was a physically and mentally very immature 15 year old and remember it well. What has struck me about the series is how young she actually was. I remember thinking of her as a mature and stunning looking woman. I can also remember that photo of her naked, sitting astride a chair which I thought was absolutely beautiful. As for the politicians I think my parents believed that was fairly typical of their behaviour and as I have aged I'm not sure that my opinions have changed much!

Fiachna50 Tue 31-Dec-19 01:52:33

Ive thought the drama was good. I find the Dr creepy. Think Scandal was better though. I was only a baby when all this was going on.
