Little Women movie

I am usually very critical of tv/films of classic books, so I went to this one feeling very cautious - and loved it. It plays fast and loose in its representations of the period; the girl's hair (no one would pay a penny for Jo's hair if it was as presented in the film), costumes, landscape etc are all less than accurate, but it gets the essence of the book absolutely right the relationships between the characters are right - and I will undoubtedly go and see it again and even buy the dvd.

I’ve been to see it with my daughter and elderly mother. We all loved it and it didn’t disappoint.

Little Women was my go to book growing up. It was my escape.

I didn’t like the way it bounced the timeline back and forward but it was beautifully filmed. I enjoyed it but didn’t love it in the way I hoped.

My OH didn’t really know the story and thought it was muddled.

I saw it last week and enjoyed it but there is a lot of jumping around with the timeline. Jo and Amy are both great and the locations are brilliant.

We went to see it at Christmas, me, my husband, two daughters, one son in law and five children.

I loved it, Amy wasn’t quite right for me, but that’s a minor thing.

It did jump about a lot, and was quite long, so I was surprised the six year old stayed glued to it throughout.

Little Women was my read and read again book from about age 9. I loved it, loved the BBC serial we'd watch on Sunday tea time. I went to the film with that feeling of some trepidation, would they ruin my memories.
A enjoyed it all. Great cast and beautiful filming. Sympathetic portrayal of the key themes.
It reminded me how much this book opened my eyes to feminism, Jo was my role model.
I agree, some of the time line was not always easy to follow but once I realised that, it worked well.

Because it’s one of my all time favourite books, I still have a copy which was my dads, I knew I’d be crying from the start, I was right, take tissues.

As it is getting these good reviews I will be watching for the DVD to come out.
I can no longer go out to the cinema.....
it was also one of my favourite books that I read over and over....it was Jo that captured me the most.
Perhaps this is the character that began the rise in feminism?

I went with one of my daughters last week. We were a bit confused about the time line .
to start with.
We did enjoy it.
My main problem was that I wanted to tidy up the hair styles.

I'm going tomorrow with a friend who's never read the books, which were favourites of mine growing up. It'll be interesting to compare our reactions.

My daughter and I saw it together and loved it.

A tiny criticism is that I didn't entirely agree with the casting of the two men -Laurie (too 'lightweight') and the Professor (too young).

Yes we all thought the professor was too young and good looking, but I thought Laurie was alright.

Arranged to see it tonight with DGD2 who is at home at the mo working on her final year dissertation. Silly Granny, should have booked tickets-only single seats scattered round the cinema so we’re going tomorrow now. She doesn’t know the story (despite all my efforts down the years to get their noses in books) but knows “someone dies”. So looking forward to it. Just hope I’m comfy-only been to this posh new cinema once, wasn’t comfy, needed a cushion in my back and was cold in air con-might take a fleece!

I wasn’t going to go as I felt a modern uptake would spoil the book for me but now you’re all starting to tempt me

It didn't live up to my expectations. I completely loved the books but the film didn't do it for me.

BlueBelle treat yourself to an afternoon at the cinema. It isn't perfect but we rarely see a film of a much loved book that is. Its definitely worth a view.

I agree Iam64, I tend to avoid film adaptations of books I’ve really loved, but I think this has been done pretty well. Something about Amy wasn’t right for me, but I’m sure many people will disagree with that.

Definitely worth seeing.

Sara65, I like Amy in this film much more than the Amy I remember from the book. The film Amy was a more rounded character, less self centred and shallow than my memory. I'm still pondering re-reading this book . That's an accolade for the film imo.

I’m going to see this with my granddaughter on Friday and looking forward to it very much.

I think it was physically that Amy was wrong for me, just not how I see her I suppose
