It’s just started and I’m liking it straightaway! Stellar cast. Imelda Staunton (love her). Francesca Anuns.

The series follows three adult siblings – Helen, Jake and Natalie – whose lives are thrown into disarray when their recently widowed mum Vivien declares she’s fallen for a new man, retired GP Mark.

As Vivien nears her 70th birthday, her children grow suspicious when Mark begins to shift her priorities away from her family.

Gorgeous location see the photo!

I have known many orthopaedic surgeons. They are generally sophisticated, well groomed and very affluent. After retiring from full time work, they often have lucrative earnings from private practice or a whole range of part time positions.Mark does not fit the bill. I know the daughter checked him out but .....

I have really enjoyed the series so far but really the doctor is so scruffy and unlikeable surely a glamorous older woman wouldn't fancy him?

J52 Wed 26-Feb-20 10:01:35

Ah yes, I’m going back too far, as it was in B/w. I forgot when colour tv was widely available.
Yes he was good in the Crying Game.
I wondered about his obviously dyed hair as I’ve seen him in things with his grey mop.
I wondered if it was only for this part, to show some kind of character vanity.
Francesca Annis also looks great.

Just checked, IDKYC was 1975/1976.

Calendargirl Wed 26-Feb-20 09:55:20

Jaffacake

Yes, the woman in the bar was the vengeful sacked hospital woman. Poor George has obviously been targeted for revenge. He seems a bit wet.

I think your dates for ‘I Didn’t Know You Cared’ are a bit early. Surely it was more like the 80’s, or even the 70’s?

Was Stephen Rea in ‘The Crying Game’, which was ground breaking at the time if I remember correctly?

Jaffacake2 Wed 26-Feb-20 09:44:53

Was the woman George met in the pub the one who Helen fired at the hospital ? Getting her revenge ?
I think the body in the bag is Mark, mum is injured and in surgery. Think there are lots of red herrings but it was an accident with the balcony collapsing due to rot from sea air. Mum has now lost love of her life

Callistemon Wed 26-Feb-20 09:14:14

Yes, Imelda is playing a great part.
Beware the friendly, helpful neighbour.

Two possible candidates for setting the car on fire, the neighbour and the new husband.

J52 Wed 26-Feb-20 09:05:33

Loving it. I do like Stephen Rea, he’s a great actor. I remember him in the 1960s northern comedy ‘ I Didn’t Know You Cared’. When I was a child!

He must have been very young, it was in black and white, and also starred a young Liz Smith.

I don’t think it will turn out to be anything obvious. I agree Imelda Staunton’s character is very creepy.
Roll on tonight!

H1954 Wed 26-Feb-20 08:50:22

Yes, it's a great drama! And no hanging in until next week either!

EllanVannin Wed 26-Feb-20 08:47:22

If anyone's creepy, it's the neighbour, she's sick.

TerriBull Wed 26-Feb-20 08:46:56

I'm enjoying it, and the glorious beach house, which set me off Googling for similar on that coast trying to find the impossible dream! Although having spent swathes of my childhood in that county with one set of grandparents who retired there and then latterly my parents who did the same in the later part of their life. I know two things about the Sussex coast. Firstly apart from Camber Sands, the beaches are mainly shingle and secondly and probably more importantly, the husband always dies first, there's a lot of widows on the south coast which won't bode well in the long run for Dr Mark shock

bikergran Wed 26-Feb-20 08:41:25

ahaaa my puzzle has now been solved...I watched the first episode...then the second last night.....then kept thinking "who was on the stretcher" I must have missed something in the first episode.so was about to re watch it until I read this this morning....so we don't know who was on the stretcher? dohhhh.. you can tell I'm not used to watching crime dramas. enjoying it though, easy to watch.

Urmstongran Wed 26-Feb-20 08:13:06

I think it Colonel Peacock, in the library, with the candlestick!

I missed last night’s episode as we were eating out with friends but I’ve enjoyed reading these comments and plan to watch it on catch up sometime today and then I’m up to date for tonight!

mumofmadboys Wed 26-Feb-20 07:55:33

I agree the doctor is creepy in every way. Even the way he moves and holds himself. Natalie's married man is more dishy! I think Mary did take the viagrara not knowing what they were

travelsafar Wed 26-Feb-20 07:51:56

I keep remembering Mark when he played the role of the detective in Dickensian and he appears to be playing this role in the same way. A bit creepy!!!!

shandi6570 Wed 26-Feb-20 07:49:39

I'm loving all your theories and the speculation but it has made me wonder who is in hospital about to have an operation. Until I read all your comments I was naively thinking that the body on the stretcher was the one in hospital and didn't realise that it was a n other and dead. Help ?

HurdyGurdy Wed 26-Feb-20 07:43:14

I didn't realise Mary had stolen Viagra - and I also thought she had lined them up to take them!

I'm really enjoying the programme. I think the doctor is VERY creepy, but I think he's too obvious a villain, and will probably turn out to be genuine

Curlywhirly Wed 26-Feb-20 07:41:35

Calendargirl I also think Mary is in love with Vivienne; she curled up and cried on the bed after being told Vivienne had got married. I think Mark is the one in the bodybag (the daughter didn't flinch when the police said they had news from the hospital - so it couldn't have been any of her family). I also think Mary set fire to the car, she's definitely not as benign as she appears to be.

Calendargirl Wed 26-Feb-20 07:05:15

Is Mary a lesbian who has secretly loved Vivian all these years?Or does she just envy Viv her looks, home, family, lifestyle, and want a bit of it?
Cannot imagine she wants the awful Mark, no one in their right mind would.

Grandma2213 Wed 26-Feb-20 01:32:56

I didn't think I would like it much but am hooked - lots of possibilities going on and a typical bickering family!

Doodledog Wed 26-Feb-20 01:13:58

It's not a serious thriller, is it? Even the music suggests it's more of a comedy. I'm enjoying it though, and I have no idea whodunnit or what they have done.

Chestnut Tue 25-Feb-20 23:59:24

I predict that it's the surgeon in the body bag and that the nosy neighbour killed him ? There's more to her than meets the eye (evidenced by the dressing gown incident). Maybe jealous?

BlueBelle Tue 25-Feb-20 23:19:23

I think it’s Mr Creepy whose in the bag
Mary s a ruman

Jaffacake2 Tue 25-Feb-20 23:10:28

But who has been killed ?Don't think it's the mother because the daughters don't seem upset when being interviewed by the police.

Urmstongran Tue 25-Feb-20 23:02:57

Def agree Calendargirl about the wealthy Cougar! A woman confident in her own skin.
