I think it’s wonderful to accept who you are; weight and all BUT if you’ve got diabetes as well you can’t make a decision to stay fat.

Miriam Margoyles’ programme
(68 Posts)If it was only that simple.
Some of us fat people make the decision to stay fat because we have tried so hard to not be fat and failed that we just have to accept what we are. That in not to say we like it.
Miriam is very blunt in talking about her own obesity. She's a very good interviewer and seems to set people at their ease and they open up to her. Her voice is wonderful too.
She’s terrific, but the programme seems to me to be defending being fat. Most of these people would look and feel better of they lost some weight. I know some people find it harder than others to lose weight, but everyone I know who decided to eat less (and kept to it) finished up much slimmer.
Ahh. Didn’t realise there was another one tomorrow night. Looks like she’s looking at the health side then.
SueH49 I know how difficult it is to lose weight believe me I struggle every day BUT I have T2 diabetes aswell.
One of the most irritating women on TV imo - ‘posh older woman says shocking things - oooh matron’.
Stay fat and accept that your chances of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, certain cancers and so on rocket as you utilise more of your fair share of health services - or don’t and reduce your portion size, limit your calorie intake and exercise more. Why do we need a programme with MM complaining about how unfair it is and how she wouldn’t be as funny if she was thinner?
Did you see the amount she was eating early in the programme ? There's your answer to her size. Gee whiz, I thought I could pack it away, but I'd be ill for a month if I ate what she did and I'm slim and would have plenty of room.
I really like MM. I don’t find her irritating at all, I find her refreshingly honest . She says what she thinks and boy would I like a fraction of that kind of confidence .
I do not usually like MM. I find her brash and her humour somewhat childish. But in this programme she seemed to be more thoughtful and humane. Her approach to the very obese man and his wife was, whilst blunt, very kind.
It will be interesting to see what the next programme brings.
It is clear that obesity carries enormous health risks, and also challenges for health resources; but the degree to which fat people grow to hate themselves is sad to see and no doubt contributes to the desire to seek comfort in food. I think her programme did contribute to encouraging a change of attitude from one of ridicule and judgement in the direction of recognising that for some people losing weight is a lifelong and bitter battle.
I like her ,she managed to build a good career in a time when gay women were ignored or their very existence denied.Posh? I'm not sure ,she is a socialist who fights for the Palestinian people and for a boycott of Israel for their treatment of the Palestinian. That puts her in two groups I'm involved with of course she has Glasgow roots and any weegie is fine in my mind.
She can be crude but hey Billy Connelly made a fortune out of being crude and people stopped criticising him decades ago .I usually watch things se's in apart fom Call the midwives which is not my thing.Excess weight can of course be down to many things ,my daughter has piled on several stone since she became ill ,the medication is one reason ,the fact she can barely walk never mind exercise another.I'll be interested to see part two of this to see if she finds a solution to the isssues people like my daughter have to cope with every day with regards to weight
I thought she was from Oxford, paddyanne? and from a rather a well-to-do family.
Is she British/Australian with Polish ancestry?
Normally I find her annoying but I found this programme interesting and thoughtful.
I was trying to work out who her friend was, she is an actress toom isn't she?
I loved the programme I don’t find her irritating, sometimes she’s too crude which can be annoying but I think on the whole she’s a very Insightful lady with a good heart and a lovely clear way of expressing herself she has a great voice too
You never have to Decipher anything because she says it as it is
The problem with her weight is she is a very short lady I m not sure of her height but I would think she’s under 5’3 and really can’t carry it
I loved when she was facing with the black girls at their club they all had such joy for life I wish I had half their confidence even though I m not overweight
I answered my own question I googled it shes 4’11 and 15 stone
Apparently many GP surgeries are now encouraging patients to seriously limit their calorie intake for up to 8 weeks by using liquid meal replacements. This was first suggested after a Consultant in Newcastle found that all his patients automatically lost weight when they were on liquid diets after stomach surgery. It is now being heralded as a way to "cure" Type 2 diabetes, is. having great success and allowing patients to come off their medication completely. Liquid meal replacements might not thereafter be a sustainable way of eating for many, but to actually be able to recover from a very serious medical condition and re-assess a life without carrying lots of excess weight might be welcomed by lots of people when they have tried so hard to diet and failed.
Her father was a jewish doctor from Glasgow who had polish roots .She made a big thing about her Scottish roots a few years ago Callistemon
There’s a push to reverse diabetes with a low carb diet which is brilliant!
For years the NHS encouraged replacing fats with carbs ( jacket potato instead of chips) when in fact carbs turn to sugars and continue doing the damage.
'Ohmother' I remember that time you are talking about very well. Me and a couple of friends in our late twenties and early thirties were doing the Atkins diet the complete opposite and we all lost weight but then there was a scare about damage to the kidneys with all the high protein. I do often wonder if that is when we started to see a rise in obesity when everyone was eating lots of cereals, Jpotatoes, pasta and rice.
Does anyone remember the FPlan (a high fibre diet) which was very popular in the 1970s/80s ?
Portion control is my mantra now.
I love MM ?
Oh yes Kate I remember most diets well. I enjoyed F plan but remember it made me a bit windy. It felt healthy though. It was the leader of the way for a lot of sensible modern ones. Better than Limits biscuits!!!
Ah yes- the Fplan! All that brown rice...
The dietary advice that has been peddled over the years is shocking.
However I still think that if people ate less -much less- the problem we have now wouldn't be as serious.
Unfortunately people still think there's an easy solution which does not involve focus, discipline and willpower, so the problem continues.
Haven't watched the programme yet.
Well she’s not doing too bad on her terrible overweight issues.
She must be nearly 80?
She's 78 I think and she does do OK, she seems very fit and active.
At nearly 80 does she really want to change? All that effort and, quite honestly after a lifetime of happy over-eating, to be miserable at having to watch every morsel that she eats?
Many slim people are in a far worse state of health than MM or any obese person for that matter.
In the 70's an old learned GP who I saw told me in no uncertain terms when my cholesterol was on the high side, that the previous patient, a large lady whose cholesterol was normal because she had fat on her body---I didn't and what fat I did have was circulating and causing problems by adhering in all the wrong places, while hers was static in her behind and not creating mischief.
The moral is, that not all the slim people you see are healthy.
I admired MM for her attitude and to have a healthy appetite will keep her going for a few years yet. At 78 she's doing extremely well. I loved her in the Marigold Hotel series.
I used to have times when I was miserable because no matter what I ate or how much it made no difference to my weight and I've always had a brilliant appetite and digestion and some of my meals would shame a navvie .
Well, perhaps not so happy as she says the results of her over eating have made her miserable.
