Just listened on BBC Sounds to ‘With Great Pleasure’ first broadcast at 7am on Christmas morning, a special Archers edition. All kinds of interesting sidelights on both the actors and their characters, as well as their choices of words and music. The programme started with Brian Aldridge and finished with Tracey Horrobin.

I have a nasty feeling that something dreadful will happen to Gavin before the end of the week as he is not in the next two weeks’ cast lists

So Charleygirl and Jaxjacky why bother posting that you've never listened? This is clearly a thread for people who do listen. Are you expressing some kind of superiority or what?

I didn’t know that the actor who plays Gavin is also the new Todd in Corrie.
I hope that Tracy and Jazzer get together. I have been listening since the 1970s when the TV programmes were affected by the miners strikes. Anyone remember that?

My life and the Archers pretty well began together. Of course there were times in my life when I didn't listen to every episode, but I have always followed it. Rather like Morris dancing, there is nothing quite so English as the both the people who like it and the people who disparage it in various ways.
My own dislikes are the way in which more recent script writers seem to have completely forgotten back stories. I can only assume that Alice's 'best friend' Amy has been relegated because TA scriptwriters are not at all keen on nurses. Doctors can occasionally be characters (Poole & Locke) and one teacher (Kathy Perks) although she really got a lot more to say when she abandoned the profession. But as soon as Amy qualified as a midwife she hasn't had a look-in.
Never mind, the police officers in TA can turn their hand to anything!

It looks as though Harrison has his hands full in the next couple of weeks reading the teasing one-liners in the Radio Times!

Well that was a bit disappointing. Wrongful arrest? Hardly life-changing. Quite enjoyed Kenton and Jolene’s virtual quiz afterwards though!

Never listened to the Archers - I'm more a TV sort of person.

Nice touch with Linda Snell’s MBE though. I think after the backlash over Nigel‘S death for the 60th they couldn’t do anything as dastardly. But the quiz afterwards was fun as well as Farming a today and Woman’s Hour pity they didn’t trail these though

Kate, it will be life-changing if she's convicted and sent down. Miscarriages of justice do happen.
I have to add that I hope there is no evidence against her and she is released without charge. Even though I often find the Kirsty character mildly irritating, nobody deserves the piles of ordure that have been shovelled upon her over the years

She only came in in 1999 for four episodes as Tom’s girlfriend and the things she had suffered, jilting, miscarriages changes of jobs and then Philip Moss. Poor girl

I think this thread is for people who do enjoy the Archers. Personally I do, even when it goes a bit off piste. Each to their own.

Good point Scribbles. But plenty of witnesses to prove her innocence, surely? Will Gavin step up and the be the man we all know he can be??!
p.s. this is definitely a thread for Archers listeners (if not necessarily devotees). I started it at the beginning of the first lockdown and hope it will continue until the programme reverts to its six day a week format. If it ever does......I am seriously beginning to doubt it as, despite all the 70th anniversary celebrations yesterday, no one mentioned it.

Peggy has always been my least favourite character but I really want to throttle her for interfering in Chris and Alice's marriage.

Times have changed since her marriage to an alcoholic so why does she assume Alice won't stay sober? Why does she assume support from a loving husband and professional therapy won't work?

Give the girl a chance.

This evening’s programme was more interesting than the “special” 70th one. The knock on effects of the slave labour builders is more far reaching and is going to build up and up. Just using few characters tonight made one of the better recent programmes ( and no Peggy for merlot!)
