I found Lara’s thread very useful and it was very popular so, as Lara hasn’t started a new thread I have.

Any suggestions on what to watch tonight gransnetters?

I started watching Dirty John on Netflix after my sis in law said about it. I am hooked. Although it is a typical hammy American series in places, it is a very good subject, all about a woman who falls under the spell of a no good man. It is based on a true life experience.

I am a bit late with this, but I'm watching My Brilliant Friend. Series 1 and 2 on Sky Atlantic. It is set in a very poor part of Naples in the 50s. It is sub titles, so I had to wait until I was feeling alert, as I have to concentrate to read it all. Unlike the Scandi dramas, they talk exceedingly fast. Had to rewind a few times.

It took several episodes before I really got into it, but am thoroughly enjoying it now. Love the music too. I have also found the first book in my online local library, so will try that after.

Talking about 'A Suitable Boy', I accidentally found 'Indian Matchmaking' on Netflix and binge watched it. I was so interested to see how they all got on with the matches carefully drawn up by Sima and her associates including astrologers and face readers. Mum and friends also consulted. Fascinating viewing. Mostly Indians living in the US but some in India.

We’ve been alternating between episodes of The Bridge (which we’ve never seen before) and Line of Duty (which we have) this week. We’re nearing the end of series 1 of the first and at the start of series 3 of the second. They’re both so good.

We’ve only confused the two once, when I mis-identified a new couple in The Bridge as the parents of missing teenager Carly in LOD. grin

Looking forward to mid-identifying a few more characters in A Suitable Boy tonight.

Loving watching Secret Scotland on 5HD with Susan Calman. Fabulous scenery, interesting information, and Calman’s enthusiasm combine to make this programme an unexpected treat.

We're watching Burley Chassis at the BBC on BBC4. Seen it before but some great footage of bygone days.

Oh, that duet with Neil Diamond. Be still my beating heart! blush

Esspee Fri 21-Aug-20 11:46:57

paddyanne we spent much of that glorious weather in lockdown on Loch Lomond. Didn’t realise we could have been looking out for the Aurora. Mind you, after a days sailing we were usually sleeping soundly well before dark. ?

BBbevan Fri 21-Aug-20 11:26:18

We went on the Aurora to Northern Norway.to see the Northern lights last year. As Espee says they were grey. But if you continued to watch they moved, reformed and changed colour. Very beautiful.

Oh, thanks Esspee. That is my expectation too.
I'll cross them off my bucket list. Our friends went specifically to see them (twice) and missed them both times.

Esspee Thu 20-Aug-20 23:39:58

Callistemon I was initially very much underwhelmed when I saw the Northern Lights. For some reason my expectation was of rainbow like colours in sheets, so something pretty.

The reality is shades of grey. When you photograph the phenomenon it photographs green but that is most certainly not what you see.

After two nights of feeling cheated we finally saw an awesome display where the lights formed a curtain then, rather like some Christmas displays in one corner they started twinkling and the light rippled downwards like a fall of snow. The effect moved along the curtain then they swirled. All in shades of grey. Of the four nights we spent in the latitudes where the phenomenon can be observed that was the only time I was awestruck though we did see the lights every night.

Not an experience for the bucket list in my opinion.

Eleothan Yes the journey was worth it. We looked for the next series but nothing as yet. I have a GD who is very like Saga in her reaction to things.
We are also watching the Swedish 'Thicker than water'. A bit like a Swedish Eastenders !!
