I found Lara’s thread very useful and it was very popular so, as Lara hasn’t started a new thread I have.

Any suggestions on what to watch tonight gransnetters?

We are watching the new Perry Mason series at the moment. I would recommend. Matthew Rhys is very good.
I'm also watching The Big C on Amazon prime. Stars Laura Linney, very funny, little bit dark. Just my cup of tea.

@Esspee If you enjoyed Breaking Bad then I think you will enjoy Good Girls. It's on Netflix though. It is both very funny, and also dramatic. My daughter and I binged watched the last series in three nights (might have been one night if she hadn't had work the next days grin).

Re runs of Inspector Morse, Kavanagh, George Gently. Michael Portillo's railway journeys, very old Van der Vaulk, loved the old ones can't stand the modern one, just old repeats really! Very little from the beeb, as very little from them interests either of us, news from Sky once a day, it's enough!! and anything of interest that freeview has to offer!

Tried Harlots last night but didn't enjoy it.
Will give Semi Detached and Squeamish About a go tonight, both comedies on BBC2. The second one is a surreal Matt Berry spoof documentary that I haven't seen advertised.

Michael Portillo's railway journeys
Jabberwok I enjoyed last night's armchair journey from Orléans to Reims. Berlin next week.

I've been watching the Channel 5 thing, "Deception" although keep drifting off in it, it's not that good though! Will probably watch the last one tonight.

Trawling through Amazon Prime trying to find something half worth while to watch, came across an amazingly good foreign language film "Capernaum" set in the slums of Beirut, a city very much in the news for unfortunate reasons this week. It is the story of a young boy brought before the court for stabbing an adult. He tells the judge he wants to sue his parents for being born and for the chaotic life he has lead. The narrative then unfolds in retrospect as to how he has reached such a state. One of the best films I've seen of late, the young child playing the lead role is superb and when I Googled him he is a Syrian refugee who had been living in Lebanon, but he and his family are now settled in Norway. The title of the film means chaos in Arabic. I'd recommend it, don't be put off by the sub titles.

The Bridge is being repeated from the beginning on BBC4 starting on Saturday. I've set the recorder. Even better than Line of Duty IMHO.

I watched this a few years ago when it was first aired and loved it. Martin Bodnia was very good in it and I was pleased to see him recently in Killing Eve.

Just watching 'Marvellous' again with Toby Jones about Neil Baldwin. It's just brilliant. Heart warming and tear jerking in equal quantities!

Bruderhof programme is on BBC1 late tonight - it was postponed for some reason so maybe record or catch up?

merlotgran Thu 13-Aug-20 22:56:30

Watching Bruderhof now. I couldn't understand why it was pulled last year.

Dark on Netflix, it's very good but I struggle with things that are dubbed as my hearing isn't great and that wasn't picked up on as a child so I have a habit of watching people's mouths when they talk so it's very noticeable to me.

Bellanonna Sat 15-Aug-20 23:09:08

I enjoyed that too Callistemon. Great music. I loved the base singer at the end. What a voice!

paddyanne Sat 15-Aug-20 23:10:50

‘Yesterday’ a new film with Himesh Patel, Lily James an Ed Sheeran among others. Sounds a bit weird but good wet Saturday night entertainment!
Jack Malik is a struggling singer-songwriter in an English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie. After a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed. Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, Jack becomes on overnight sensation with a little help from his agent

Kate1949 Sun 16-Aug-20 10:14:42

I loved that film Marmight. I saw it at the cinema last year.

Callistemon Sun 16-Aug-20 11:39:39

Bellanonna, Sir Willard White, a bass-baritone.
Yes, he has a wonderful voice, we should see and hear more of him on television, although he has had an illustrious career in opera around the world.

EllanVannin Sun 16-Aug-20 11:52:58

I enjoyed the VJ programme last night and wondered how Sheridan Smith was going to get through her song as she was emotional after those "old soldiers" had given their accounts.
