Having come to the end of series 5 of Rita, a Danish export, we are looking for suggestions as to what we might enjoy next.
We have enjoyed Rake an Australian series,
Spiral, French,
The Bridge, Danish/Swedish,
Breaking Bad, American,
Heist, Spanish,
The Good Wife, American,
Designated Survivor, American
Offspring, Australian

We don’t like horror or science fiction.

All suggestions welcome.

How about ‘ Chernobyl’, on Amazon prime? Five in the series. Very informative and educational as well as being a really emotional drama.

Sparklefizz Wed 09-Dec-20 18:39:01

Ginnytonic5 Which channel can I find "The Medici" on? Sounds fab.

Glad you liked offspring. “CAll my agent “. Is great.

Esspee Wed 09-Dec-20 18:42:47

We enjoyed Queen’s Gambit, Fauda and the Crown, and Ozark.
Didn’t get into Schitts Creek but so many liked it we may try again.
Marseille, think I remember that got good reviews and we haven’t heard of Medici so thank you vegansrock and Ginnytonic5, that’s three to start with tonight.
We really need a review section on Gransnet where we could give a score for series.

The Queen's Gambit very good
I also enjoyed The Looming Tower - Prime
I've had The Bureau recommended to me, also French, and even better than Spiral, I'm told! - Is that possible?shock will be trying that out soon, it's not on Prime's "Free to me" category though.
Unbelievable on Netflix really good
Similarly Unorthodox, although as yet have only seen half of that.
Looking at the other recommendations here, Chernobyl, harrowing and excellent.
Esspee - I'm like you I didn't get into Schitt's Creek either it seemed to win loads of awards though, didn't grab me, thought the humour was lame hmm
Madmen - is very good if you haven't seen that.
I liked The Goodwife too, I'm betting Suits is a pale imitation of that.

I'm sure I'll think of some more.

I think the trouble with Prime is the viewer has to do quite a bit of trawling through their catalogue, recommendations are good, because inevitably there is dross.

Good Girls on Netflix
5 Bedrooms BBC iPlayer
Ozark on Netflix
7 seconds on Netflix
All really enjoyable

I’ve enjoyed On Prime
The Upside
Lad
Cider with Rosie

Esspee Thu 10-Dec-20 07:26:14

I’d forgotten about Good Girls LaRia44, similar in many ways to Breaking Bad.
We made a start on Medici last night. Beautifully filmed but we prefer something lighter. I am sure we will go back to it.
Marseille really fitted the bill and I expect we will rattle through the series in no time.

These are easy watching ...grace and frankie. Also Gilmore girls

vegansrock Thu 10-Dec-20 07:54:59

All4 Walter Presents has some good foreign language series we enjoyed The Swingers ( Dutch) and are watching The Same Sky ( German Cold War spy drama). We also enjoyed Parasite, the Oscar winner, which is on Prime.

henetha Thu 10-Dec-20 10:38:30

If you enjoyed Breaking Bad you will like it's spin-off,
Better Call Saul, I think.

felice Thu 10-Dec-20 11:28:18

I just signed up for Netflix last week, I liked so far,
Signs (Polish crime show)
Bordertown (Belgian)
Both in English, I will have a look at some of the ones recommended here.
Good timing.

Ahhh I lived Rita. I'm quite into Danish TV at the moment. I'm currently finishing off series 3 of The Rain.

There is a Swedish TV series, Love & Anarchy that is a bit lighter than most Scandi TV. Also Swedish is a series called Quicksand.

GagaJo Thu 10-Dec-20 11:41:21

Loved!

GagaJo Thu 10-Dec-20 11:43:39

Terribull, try Bflix.to or Wlext.is for TV series (or films). Both free. They're a bit glitchy but once you get used to them, they're good for Euro drama.

How about "The Americans" (A USA series). It's about a couple of Russians spies, who operate (undercover) in the USA - the series is set in the early 1980s, but the premise is that this couple have been living in the USA for years. They look and sound exactly like a "normal" American couple: they run a business and even have two children: who were born and raised there (and who don't know the truth). Compelling stuff which (IMO) gets better as it goes along: we're into series three now. (There are six series of about thirteen episodes each.) The main male role (that of a Russian, who "presents" as an American) is played by Mathew Rhys - who's Welsh! We love it.

I enjoyed The Crown
The Queens Gambit
Chesapeke shores
And just finished The Virgin River

GrandmasueUK Thu 10-Dec-20 22:37:46

We loved Good Girls too and The Good Place.
Dead to me was funny. The Kominski Method too.
The Letdown another Australian Comedy.
Home for Christmas is a Norwegian comedy.

Lucca Thu 10-Dec-20 22:48:46

Oh yes the letdown was good.
I find virgin river a bit cheesy....

Gagajo what does glitchy mean ?
