Music around the house all the time or silence?

My husband-and most people it seems-always has some form of music on in the background at home. I hate this. It’s not because I hate all music, it’s because for me, there are times when I enjoy listening to music but at home, if I’m doing chores or relaxing/reading, I find it irritating and distracting. I never turn it off while he’s around as that’s not fair, but am I very odd? What do others think??….

I like Radio 2 and have it on a lot. If not that I have my playlists or just ask Alexa to play something I like. DH has developed a liking for LBC which I hate. He has it on as soon as we wake up and we go to sleep to it too. Soooo annoying ?

I listen to Classic fm a lot, especially when driving or on my laptop, cooking etc. I enjoy it, and it also helps to cancel out my tinnitus.

I can’t stand DJ inane chat on the radio , and R2 just plays awful pop. But I have just found Boom radio. It’s great for 50;s 60,s musici remember and sing along too ,

Here's another Radio 4 listener, lots of interesting and informative stuff on there, starting with the Today programme. I don't have it on all day, though, as DH not a fan.

Unfortunately, from having it on all the time before I turned fifty, since my divorce I always have radio 4 on, even through the night. Music makes me sad, although I have nothing really to complain about these days

Love chart music on , practically all the time . DH hates music on so bought myself earbuds. Now both happy and he has the added hilarity of watching me miming and bopping to non existent tunes!!!!?

We have music on most of the day, listening to Boom Radio at the moment. In the mornings, up to 10, we listen to LBC.

Mainly peace and quiet for me. I like some music but like to choose when and what.
Constant background noise drives me mad.

I have Radio 4 on most of the time for company, music if I am in the right mood. I sometimes like the quiet, but living alone now, it depresses me.

Puzzler61 Mon 03-May-21 16:10:44

We usually the radio on in the mornings, quiet in the afternoons and TV in the evenings.
When we get in the car we both reach to turn on the radio for music or a podcast.
In the past when we drove to the continent for holidays we would make compilation music tapes for the journeys.

Ooh I forgot another thing music wise that I don’t like….music in shops! Not that browsing has been that likely lately, but I can’t cope with that either!!

TrendyNannie6 Mon 03-May-21 15:39:37

Music, Music, Music, when I’m doing housework and I sing along while hoovering just like Freddie Mercury but not I want to break free!

BBC Radio 4 here, for many years it was the World Service when I moved from the UK , but I moved to Radio 4.
DD used to complain about it all the time until she sat an Economics exam at school here and it was exactly what the radio 4 programme she had been 'forced' to listen to the day before. She got an A+.
Listening now.

I used to have music on most of the time but don’t seem to listen to it much these days. I always used to have a favourite album that I’d play to death. Not sure why that is. I do always seem to have a song going round in my head though, usually something I don’t like much. I’ve always wondered if it’s just me that suffers from ear worms.

Mainly silence for me.
Although I do like to listen to collections from musicals i have seen.
Usually when doing housework.

Charleygirl5 Mon 03-May-21 15:20:25

Silence for me-I hate reading if there is music on in the background. If I want to listen to something I will switch it on and when finished, switch it off again.

Music blasting outside finishes me off so I retire indoors to peace and quiet.

Bridie22 Mon 03-May-21 15:13:23

Radio on from getting up until bedtime, always need background noise.

Sara1954 Mon 03-May-21 15:11:00

Like Monica, I only ever listen to Radio 4, but most of the time I like silence.
I can’t bear the radio on in the car either.

Jaxjacky Mon 03-May-21 15:02:29

Radio on in kitchen most of the time and in the car, channels vary.

silverlining48 Mon 03-May-21 14:40:40

I don’t listen to music but I have a radio in every room, and listen to radio 4 nearly all day/ night ( don’t sleep well). It’s always interesting and it stops me focusing on my tinnitus.

M0nica Mon 03-May-21 14:39:51

I do not have music on all the time, but my radio is permanently tuned into Radio 4 and I listen to a lot of talk programmes.

SueDonim Mon 03-May-21 14:31:13

I wouldn’t call it silence but we don’t have tv/radio or music on in the background. We seem to have a cacophony of sounds emanating from household appliances, though.

Washing machine, drier, dishwasher, the boiler, the cooker, microwave, phone and iPads all seem to yell at us, plus two cats vocal in their demands for attention. grin

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 03-May-21 14:27:10

I have music on more or less constantly. Radio 6 in the kitchen and lounge or maybe a CD. In the car I play 20 year old trance music CDs. OH gets a bit agitated sometimes, but he likes some of it.

hamster58 Mon 03-May-21 14:24:07

Ah thank you all for replying. I don’t feel so odd now! I’m not stressed at all but do find unnecessary noise is likely to make me feel so. I even mute the sound on the tv if husband and I are working out what to watch and what to record-otherwise it’s like having a third person interrupting!! I do however love listening to novels while I do the cleaning or am driving

Funny one this. In S house the radio is on constantly. Usually chat but I can't understand the reason for it. At first I found it an absolute intrusion but now it goes right over my head. Often meant to ask him about it but never managed. We're having dinner this Wed so will ask. Me? I'm too mean to pay for the electricity if not listening. I do listen to a fair bit of radio but it's selective and not ad hoc.
