TV tonight: Lily James and Dominic West star in The Pursuit of Love .......... Emily Mortimer's adaptation of Nancy Mitford's tale of love and passion between the wars begins.

I'd much rather watch a repeat of The Borrowers.
Loved Ian Holm
He was a Shakespearean actor too, so I can't be that common.

Calendargirl Tue 11-May-21 06:51:44

Watched the last part again as I fell asleep on Sunday night.
Not keen on Lily James somehow, the way she ‘does’ her mouth. It was the same in Downton.

Ladyleftfieldlover Tue 11-May-21 07:01:00

I loved the books and loved the version from a few years back with Judi Dench. This new adaptation was such a disappointment.

DanniRae Tue 11-May-21 07:27:08

Turned it off quite early on when I realised it was not for me.

MerylStreep Tue 11-May-21 09:21:40

Could one tell me where I stand in the pecking order as I don’t have a fireplace or mantelpiece ?

hollysteers Tue 11-May-21 10:05:57

Yes Sago, aristocrats never wave their knives and forks around. Julian Fellowes had to mention these details to actors in Downton Abbey.
The excitement, ‘fun’ sadness level all turned up too high for me and Lily J seems the only actress available at the mo, rather like Judi Dench, although good as she is, must have cloned herself to appear in so many productions. Give others a chance for goodness sake!
I will carry on watching as it will probably calm down and I like the frocks.

Aveline, I am glad you say the book is better. I might try it when I finish the novels I am on. The decor of the TV programme was pretty but for me the action was unbelievable not funny.

tiredoldwoman Tue 11-May-21 10:36:55

I binge watched it all yesterday whilst painting my living room . I thought it was a beautiful , delicious romp .

Nannabumble70 Tue 11-May-21 10:41:05

Me too, disappointed with Pursuit of Love

inishowen Tue 11-May-21 10:42:44

Oh dear, it was dire. The actresses looked about 30 and were meant to be teenagers. It looked like they were lesbians but didn't quite know it. I haven't read the book so I've no idea if it turns out they are lesbians.

JdotJ Tue 11-May-21 10:46:49

I gave up on it pretty early on.

4allweknow Tue 11-May-21 10:50:42

With Call the Midwife and now this, Sunday evening on BBC is so boring.

Notright Tue 11-May-21 10:50:48

Thank you everyone for your reviews on the TV programme. It proves I was right in thinking, it won't be a patch on reading the books. I loved them and laughed at them. Glad I didn't waste my time.

Nonny Tue 11-May-21 10:51:22

I have read and re-read these books over the years with amusement and pleasure.
I decided to watch Sunday nights production against my better judgement as I find that favourite books are frequently ruined for me. I was not wrong. Although I thought Uncle Matthew was brilliant I felt that the girls looked far too old. I was confused by the music. Could they not have found something of the period?

Someone else who can’t stand Call The Midwife! I thought it was just me.

Lucca Tue 11-May-21 10:54:21

No grandma jet... me too ! Call the midwife is so cheesy and twee.

But I did like pursuit of love

annodomini Tue 11-May-21 10:54:27

I've always admired the magnificent fireplaces in stately homes and, now I come to think of it, they don't have mantelpieces. I have a mantelpiece with a mirror (looking glass is more U) above it and family photos on it. And where else would I put Christmas cards?

Nonny Tue 11-May-21 10:56:20

Call the Midwife was good to begin with but has gone on far beyond when the books were about!

Alegrias1 Tue 11-May-21 10:56:56

I get irrationally upset when someone says a program was "dire" (sorry inishowen) or "rubbish".

It wasn't dire. You didn't like it, and that's OK, but plenty of people did and saying its "dire" makes out it was badly made, or not worthy of being appreciated. What does that say about our tastes? There is another Sunday night program, mentioned above, which is sentimental, misrepresents the attitudes of the time it is portraying and loves a happy ending. I don't like it, but lots of people do. I don't tell them their favoured program is "dire".

I have a mantelpiece. It has ornaments on it. I'm common wink.

Polly4t42 Tue 11-May-21 11:07:43

I really liked it at last something fun on a Sunday night at 9 pm. I don’t want anything to serious, violent or depressing on a Sunday leave all that for a week night.

Aveline

If you haven't read the books you'll have no idea how disappointing this production is.

Not true.

True for some, I think. I really enjoyed the production in itself, but the books have so much more to them.

The Mitford girls are fascinating; whether fascinating in the 'utterly horrific' or 'really interesting' sense I can never make up my mind.

garrer Tue 11-May-21 11:13:58

What a disappointment

Annaram1 Tue 11-May-21 11:16:21

Well, actually I enjoyed the program and look forward to the next episode.

Amalegra Tue 11-May-21 11:19:07

I just think it came over as trying to hard and the characters vapid and uninteresting. Disappointed really as the book was ok-not brilliant though.

grannybuy Tue 11-May-21 11:23:21

It was more lightweight than the book, but entertaining. There were a few laugh out loud moments. All in all, there is a story, it has humour and is visually attractive, more than can be said of some programmes, so I'll carry on watching. I do like Andrew Scott!
