TV tonight: Lily James and Dominic West star in The Pursuit of Love .......... Emily Mortimer's adaptation of Nancy Mitford's tale of love and passion between the wars begins.

I enjoyed this adaptation & thought the modern twist worked well. The soundtrack was crazy but in a good way.

aristocrats never wave their knives and forks around. Julian Fellowes had to mention these details to actors in Downton Abbey.
I don't suppose aristos in Julian Fellowes world go about throwing over tables, threatening to beat their daughters or boasting about how many of "The Hun" they killed either.

I'm sorry if people think it isn't the same as the book but there are so many productions of other novels that do the same. You have to take it as something different and at least people are getting to know about the Mitford girls.

This was brilliant viewing for me and I don't mind that it's not true to the book. The acting, good story, glamour and escapism is more important to me. I loved it.

I loved it. Love all Nancy Mitford’s books and I thought it captured the spirit of the book. A bit silly and whimsical but pure escapism.

Lizzie44 Tue 11-May-21 11:39:53

I loved this. It was such a change from the plethora of gritty crime dramas. It was a clever and witty adaptation of the book and captured the madcap lives of Nancy Mitford's characters. Dominic West and Andrew Scott in particular were excellent and I liked Freddie Fox as Oxford student and future politician Tony - surely a parody of Boris Johnson?
I enjoyed the whacky touches in the production such as the music and the way that a new group of characters would arrive on screen accompanied by a handwritten flourish of their names.

Oh, I don't know Trisher. As long as they're not waving their knives about I expect those things are fine in these circles. wink

I watched this on iplayer ONLY because Andrew Scott is in it and he is such an amazing actor. However, I was not that enamoured by it. Will give it another go.

l thought it complete tripe after only 20 minutes changed channel.

Aepgirl Tue 11-May-21 11:50:56

I’m so pleased to know that I’m not alone in not enjoying this.

Utter cobblers, I managed about ten minutes and then turned on the radio, Seth Lakeman’s folk music tour of Scotland, brilliant. Like Shandy57, I detested Bridgestone too, that got ten minutes as well. Why do these Uber TV geeks think we are all 16 and dim ?

knspol Tue 11-May-21 12:08:33

Watched some of it and disappointed except for the scene with Andrew Scott and his entourage of dancers. Have read some reviews of the book and decided to download that to read , can't be worse than the TV version. Jane McDonald cruising was much better even without her voice.

TrishJ Tue 11-May-21 12:12:00

Loved it!

Sheilasue Tue 11-May-21 12:23:02

I am enjoying it l Lilly Allen is very good in the part and comes over sexy. Can’t wait for next Sunday.

Pursuit of Love version took a bit of getting used to as I was expecting a trad: Downton Abbey take on the novel. Not so ! This version is fun - do watch it and relax into it and LAUGH !!

loopyloo Tue 11-May-21 12:34:36

Did not like it. Lily Allen did not look 18 and I find she's the go to romantic actress at the moment which is tedious. Surely there are lots of other young actresses out there!
Also why is it acceptable to put fox hunting, whipping and female oppression on tv and it becomes ok because it's the upper class and funny?

Callistemon Tue 11-May-21 12:34:49

I don't think Boris was born in 1945 when the book was written, though.

Perhaps because it was written 75 years ago and this is based on the lives of the Mitfords?

We can't change history, only learn from it.

Alegrias1 Tue 11-May-21 12:40:58

Its satire. Its not funny ha-ha. The ridiculousness of it is the point. There's rules about waving your knife about but killing foreigners with an agricultural implement is laudable.

TanaMa Tue 11-May-21 12:41:00

Obviously a 'marmite' programme!! Personally couldn't make head nor tails of it and so boring, lasted 20.mins.

I do remember the Mitfords who still seemed to hit the headlines when I was young although their heyday was between the wars.

(I'm not that old)

Callistemon Tue 11-May-21 12:49:13

I think they hit the headlines again a few years ago when Debs, the youngest, died (Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire)

How interesting to have such different view points. I thought it was dreadful. I did last the hour but I won’t be watching the next one.
