TV tonight: Lily James and Dominic West star in The Pursuit of Love .......... Emily Mortimer's adaptation of Nancy Mitford's tale of love and passion between the wars begins.

Callistemon Tue 11-May-21 12:58:42

this is based on the lives of the Mitfords?

I should qualify that:

It's not the story of the Mitfords, not autobiographical, but it epitomises that era and how the aristos lived.

Absolutely love it!

Some of the comments on here rather put me in my mind of uncle Matthew.......(utter cobblers! Complete tripe!)

I’m not 16 or dim either and I liked it.

^I liked Freddie Fox as Oxford student and future politician Tony - surely a parody of Boris Johnson?^

I don't think Boris was born in 1945 when the book was written, though.

He fits the stereotype, though.

So I don't have to take up too much space, I agree with your post about foxhunting, etc. We can't obliterate the past.

I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to next week.

I watched all three episodes last night. I Loved the book and I also loved this production. Thought all the characters were well cast especially Dominic West and Lily James and the modern music gave it a quirky edge. Someone up thread said the production style was similar to Peaky Blinders and I totally agree. Only 3 episodes so perfect for binge watching I think.

It seems very stylised, in a way that is in vogue at the moment: costume drama with knowing side glances to the 21st century and its mores. ( ie: the recent adaptation of Emma, with Anya Taylor Joy, The Great with Elle Fanning, Harlots with Lesley Manville). I’ve heard it described as “ anti historical”. Bridgerton was unbearable IMHO, but I generally quite like a romp. I will continue watching and reserve judgement. Lilly James is so pretty I can’t decide whether to love or hate her, but she is certainly camera-genic.smile

There was an amazing programme on at 9 about Windermere and the children from the Holocaust ! Much better than this plus Sunday not the same without LOD! ?

I am enjoying it l Lilly Allen is very good in the part and comes over sexy. Can’t wait for next Sunday.

It’s LilyJames. grin

Wendy Tue 11-May-21 13:38:36

I was disappointed but will give next week’s episode a chance.

EmHar Tue 11-May-21 13:41:36

Well to be fair I havnt read the books and in my opinion no adaptation ever lived up to the book but I loved it ! It’s sometimes hard to get your head round modern music in a period setting but it does hopefully make it more accessible to a younger generation perhaps and I love the quirkiness : a little bit if a homage to Stephen Poliakoff? I think it’s a marmite thing but I thought it was a lot of fun and fabulous costumes and sets : there is not a lot of that on at the moment let’s face it !?

I think the fox hunting, bullying, xenophobia and sexism is well worth showing, sometimes we forget how far we have come. "Education is wasted on girls" was widely believed until recently.

Alioop Tue 11-May-21 14:00:26

I didn't like it at all, gave up and turned over. All my friends did the same.

tattygran14 Tue 11-May-21 14:05:11

No. Gave up after ten minutes. And I have seen quite enough of Lily James.

Bluecat Tue 11-May-21 14:08:53

I liked it, though it didn't live up my expectations. Adaptations of books very rarely do. Sometimes, as in this case, they are quite enjoyable and sometimes they are completely unbearable.

I wasn't particularly keen on Lily James as Linda but the rest were pretty well cast, particularly Uncle Matthew and Davey. And Andrew Scott was divine, as always.

cannotbelieveiamaskingthis208 Tue 11-May-21 14:42:52

I love Dominic West.

Cat4 Tue 11-May-21 14:46:34

I managed about 20 minutes thought it was awful.

Ramblingrose22 Tue 11-May-21 16:34:04

I haven't read all the previous comments but I switched off after 5 minutes and cancelled the series recording too.

I can see why some people might enjoy it if they enjoyed the book and like the actors who are excellent.

I just couldn't care less about another group of posh families and their repressed younger generation living it up without their elders' knowledge? I assume this was what would be happening later on anyway.

FranT Tue 11-May-21 16:52:48

Terrible! I downloaded all the episodes in anticipation, but it was such a load of tosh, I shall be deleting them, very disappointing, bet it cost a bomb to make too!

Artaylar Tue 11-May-21 16:57:32

It's not the best thing I've seen, though I liked it; it was a lot of fun.

I did think the actress who played Fanny was prettier than Lily James. There were numerous unflattering shots of Lily's somewhat pouty/sulky features.

Dominic West was great.

katy1950 Tue 11-May-21 17:14:37

Not for me can't watch that lily girl watched Jane McDonald instead much better

I agree.

The book I'm reading at the moment (fiction) is partly set in 1939 in the States and one young woman persuaded her wealthy father to let her go to university; he allowed it as long as she didn't major in economics as she wanted and did not seek a career afterwards. Her duty was to marry well.

Alexa Tue 11-May-21 17:49:04

Callistemon thanks for that comment. I had forgotten contemporary fiction is a reliable source for social -historical facts.

Lucca Tue 11-May-21 18:19:43

Just as an aside.....how different peoples viewing tastes are ! I’d rather pop some sharp objects in my eyes than hear/watch jane Mac Donald on her cruises!

Lucca Tue 11-May-21 18:20:42

Callistemon that book sounds good ...what’s it called?
