I did find some moments quite comical but when I read that "Uncle Matthew" (based apparently on Mitford's father) actually hunted his children through the forest with a whip I felt slightly queasy. Although it was presented as funny, should a xenophobic man who bullies and terrorises his children be the subject of humour?
I haven't read the book but assume it has a similar jokey tone. I did not find the characters spirited, charmingly eccentric or amusing. I think the girls are vacuous and annoying and, in general, they are a ghastly bunch of people, several of whom had strong Nazi connections.
As Call the Midwife was mentioned on this thread, I used to like this programme very much but, although it shines a light on some important events and issues occurring at the time, it has become rather sickly sweet for my liking - and the continual soppy music is beginning to grate on me.
I remember watching The Glittering Prizes and liking it but I haven't a clue as to what it was about. All I can remember is Tom Conti.
I wish they would show Our Friends in the North again as I think I must have missed the first episode and in those days if you missed an episode you couldn't turn to catch up. I would like to see it as it received rave reviews at the time.
