I started watching this half heartedly last night as it has the same small pool of current popular actors and actresses in it, and one of them i am not really keen on. But to my surprise it drew me in. The setting of being underwater in a submarine is different and i am looking forward to the next episode this evening.

I did wonder what would happen if you fired a gun on a submarine. Any one know?
Is Morse really the "baddy"?

My money's on him, trisher.

How come an Able Seaman on his own got access to a gun and ammunition?
He could, of course, be a Warrant Officer or commissioned Officer as uniforms seem a bit lax, who knows?

I presume they were not allowed to use correct uniform or an accurate set in case it gave military secrets away.

Pittcity I don't think it's giving any military secrets away to show a picture of a Chief Petty Officer wearing the correct uniform, not a junior rating's uniform as in the photo of Martin Compston.
(Is that all we're going to see of him?)

Anyway, they're all working so would probably be wearing there working uniforms.

A new series about life on a submarine starts Channel 5 at 9pm on Monday 13th for anyone interested.

Petera I believe DCO Silva is equal in rank with Commander Prentice. Perhaps why he was so cooperative once alone with her after Captain Newsome relieved him of duty and confined him to his quarters. However, Prentice seems to regard himself as equal and some kind of watchdog over Newsome. I note the latter is also listed as Commander on imdb but that be a mistake. Is he "acting" Captain, perchance? I may have to watch again to see if I can pick up any clues or nuances.

Yes. I wondered about a gun being fired on a sub. What if he missed and the bullet made a hole????? shock

Petera Mon 06-Sept-21 14:11:19

Thanks Silverbridge. I'm still unsure of the ranks on the submarine and I understand that the captain is essentially god irrespective of his or her rank. But what made we wonder this was thinking that she might outrank the XO.

On the first:

www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/jurisdiction

Ships at sea

The law is quite complex but in simple terms the courts in England and Wales have jurisdiction to try British citizens for offences committed on UK ships in the ‘high seas’ or in ‘any foreign port of harbour’ or committed ‘on any foreign ship to which he does not belong’. The courts may also try foreign nationals for offences committed on UK ships in the ‘high seas’. The UK courts have jurisdiction over any offence committed in UK territorial waters regardless of the nationality of the offender or of the flag state that the ship is registered under.

From a variety of sites I have found that a police DCI is equivalent to a civil service SEO which is equivalent to a naval commander.

I rewatched the documentary about the nuclear submarines that was repeated a few days ago. It was so different to the scenes on Vigil.
I presume they were not allowed to use correct uniform or an accurate set in case it gave military secrets away.
I think the police/MI5 interest is dramatic license as well.
I wouldn't be surprised if far worse is covered up by the military though.

Petera Mon 06-Sept-21 12:18:07

Can someone explain the boundary between the civil and military police? I.e. is a murder on a military facility normally investigated by the civil police (not that I really care as I'm happy to suspend truth for dramatic reasons)?

Also, with regard to Silva's position on the boat - do police officers not have an equivalent military rank in these situations? I know that Civil Servants do.

Love it. A completely different location for murder. Unlikely to happen as all the sub mariners I met in my job (albeit many moons ago) were particularly pleasant, even tempered individuals for obvious reasons.

Lewie, she does her own stunts! Did she get winched down onto the submarine. It might be feel queasy just watching it!

Callistemon Wed 01-Sept-21 22:30:20

Me too, Juliet27

Juliet27 Wed 01-Sept-21 22:18:59

I enjoyed it far more once I added subtitles!

Hellogirl1 Wed 01-Sept-21 22:04:51

I usually avoid anything featuring Suranne Jones, as I`m not keen on her, but have just watched episode 1 of Vigil, and thought it was very good.

Caleo Wed 01-Sept-21 16:56:53

I am usually confused about details in the narratives of crime dramas including Vigil but I quite like Vigil because of the development of the moral dilemmas.

Petera Wed 01-Sept-21 16:44:10

Lewie

We're both enjoying it too. I read somewhere that she did all her own stunts - brave lady! grin

I do all my own stunts too, but it's not nearly as impressive smile

I dont watch Endeavour but i did watch Morse though..made no sense to me why make a programme of a character, but back to front.would have been much better to show him as in his younger days first, then as the older, wiser, Morse.would have had a bit of background on him then. They often get Tv series wrong..

Because the TV series Morse was adaopted from the books by Colin Dexter.

The Lewis TV series followed as a sequel and the Endeavour series followed that as a prequel to Morse..

I was trying to think of his name and what he had appeared in, as his voice is distinctive whatever accent he's using. Eventually I googled the list of Vigil cast members.

Just read my posts Sparklefizz ?

I hated Suranne Jones in Coronation St, couldn't stand her- but have loved everything else she's done- just goes to show she is a good actress though, as it must have been just the Character of Karen McDonald i couldn't stand!?

Nannan2 Wed 01-Sept-21 13:38:30

Or, alternatively, if something turns out not as good as its made out to be, i can delete them.?

Nannan2 Wed 01-Sept-21 13:36:20

I'm recording it, so can watch all at once, instead of being on tenterhooks for next episode.I often do that.it saves the 'oh, i cant wait for next one' feeling!

He doesn’t sound any different to me in this series than he does in Endeavour (and we watch a lot of Endeavour?!). Agree the sound quality could be better.
