More ‘British’ TV? What do they mean?

Just wondering what our ridiculous government are proposing. What is ‘British’ TV?

I admit to liking old fashioned detective dramas such as Midsommer Murders, Vera etc. and modern ones like Line of Duty. Costume drama is another favourite. I’d definitely like more home grown TV rather than loads of USA imports.

Just been watching Jewel in the Crown for the first time. What an indictment of British rule in India. Perhaps we will see more programmes about the iniquities of British rule elsewhere in the world and the appalling treatment both ancient and modern inflicted on the poorest in our society? Somehow I doubt that.

So what do the government mean?

Some of you lot are soo funny calling positive comments "ridiculous" just because you want to be right. I follow every genre and I do have experience. Did I say foreign art wasn't up to it? Have any of you actually worked in theatre or stage schools? Are your kids employed in the business? We have not eradicated our place on the world stage. Sport, the Arts and Media go way beyond that cuffufle. British TV will always move forward and re invent itself.

Good post Lincslass.

Just a few:
Vos Objets Ont Une Histoire, based onAntiques Roadshow,Cousu Main, based upon ourSewing Bee,Danse Avec Les Stars, The Weakest Link or le Maillon Faible, Le Meilleur Pâtissier, The Great British Bake Off. Not to mention Morse, Midsommer Murders, Broadchurch, Deal or No Deal all of which show in France.
I think The Crystal Maze might have been a French production.

Well claiming "Derry Girls" as a British show is a bit unfair. The Irish are upset and say it's Irish. I do wonder significant numbers of British writers and British productions have in the past had backing from EU money, both directly (look for the EU symbol at the end) and indirectly (the EU encourages and develops talent). I don't suppose making more "British" TV will involve making the financial contribution that will be needed to replace this.

Josianne, you said that the British have always led the way where the arts are concerned. Its a silly statement, not true and deserved some some funny comments.

Regarding whether European films win Oscars and Emmys. That's an interesting view. That Oscars and Emmys are the yardstick against which other countries measure their success in TV and film.

As opposed to, say, the Césars, the Goyas or whatever. Winning a prize dominated by the anglophone industry isn't necessarily every filmmaker's dream.

Good heavens! Where there's a Gran there's an argument. Personally, I find dramas made in UK to be the best. Eg Poirot, Downton, Grantchester, Morse, Endeavour etc etc. We should certainly be encouraging all those involved in those productions to produce more obviously British dramas.
Obviously other countries produce programmes that are characteristically their own and that's fine. We can access them easily enough. I wouldn't want our TV programmes to blend into mid Atlantic bland entertainment though.

Why?

Does it matter that Poirot is Belgian? ( I know he's fictional but you know what I mean.)

Scones

Hopefully it will mean more Cunk on Britain. Now that really was a show that demonstrated all that was good and world leading about our nation.

Just marching off to the market to buy a pound of proper British grown bananas before coming home to some proper English grown coffee.

Oh I just love that programme, Scones. Has me in tears of laughter. Sometimes I can hardly breathe.

Every room in Eastenders will have to have a picture of the Queen and a flag propped up in the corner.

It sounds as if you represent the people the statement was aimed at ayse

I like all of the above too. I do find programs from most other countries just as good at times though.

I'm not too fussed what they mean, but Britain has always led the way where the Arts are concerned so bring it on. It can be innovative or traditional, the important thing is to show our amazing skills in this field using new technology. TV will always have its place.

I agree, and if it means more money for British arts then so much the better.

The thing is....some people actively dislike anything at all British being praised, and they are British themselves, crazy isn’t it.

A new reality TV programme “I’m Royalty, get me out of this”.

Josianne Fri 17-Sept-21 14:21:26

And for the little ones there is even a Mondo di Pepa Pig in Milan.

There are spin offs in merchandise too.

Josianne Fri 17-Sept-21 14:25:46

And sold to over 100 counties.

maddyone Fri 17-Sept-21 14:29:58

We watch lots of international television programmes. We think at the moment there’s little British tv to watch, or anyway that we want to watch.

lemongrove Fri 17-Sept-21 14:36:06

There are lots of good British dramas around this last few years maddy although I think the pandemic has had it’s effect in most countries, with productions having to be halted.

Aveline Fri 17-Sept-21 14:42:23

Oh Alegrias fancy not knowing 'Poirot' was written by the thoroughly British, English even, author Agatha Christie.
I'm sure you prefer 'River City', 'Still Game' and 'Scot Squad' of course being Scottish.
There are TV programmes around to suit everyone so no need to argue at all!

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 14:47:07

Poirot was written by Agatha Christie? Oh my world is rocked, I thought it was Herge. Or maybe Jacques Brel hmm

Yes, I love watching those while drinking my Bucky and scoffing my deep fried Mars Bars. hmm

lemongrove Fri 17-Sept-21 14:51:04

Does it hurt you to think of yourself as British Alegrias ? ?

JaneJudge Fri 17-Sept-21 14:52:50

A new reality TV programme “I’m Royalty, get me out of this”.

grin

Our Prime Ministers could feature in his own series, 3 weddings and 25 babies and counting

maddyone Fri 17-Sept-21 14:55:03

Yes lemon there is stuff others want to watch, but not a lot that appeals to us. We enjoy Vera but we’re disappointed to find that after two new programmes the rest of the series will not be until January. I also wanted to watch last night’s drama Help, but we’ve decided to watch it on 4 at a later date. We watched the next episode in an Italian series we’re watching at the moment instead.
